IGNOU re-registration is how a continuing learner registers for the next year or semester of the same programme and pays its fee. The July 2026 cycle closed on 30 September 2026, after extensions, with a Rs 200 late fee in the final weeks. As of 13 October 2026, IGNOU has not announced the January 2027 dates.
What IGNOU re-registration means and who needs it
IGNOU admits you once, for the first year or semester. After that, the Common Prospectus for July 2026 defines re-registration as "registration in the next semester/year of a programme". Every learner whose programme runs longer than one year or semester goes through it, once for each new year or semester, until the programme ends.
One rule surprises a lot of students. The prospectus says you should re-register on schedule whether or not you appeared in the exams, and whether or not you passed the courses of your current session. Do not wait for results. Failed or pending courses can be cleared in later exams, but a missed re-registration window can cost you a semester or a year.
You need to re-register if you are in a multi-year or multi-semester programme such as a BA, B.Com, BCA, MA, M.Com or MBA, and you are moving to the next year or semester.
Programmes that last a single year or semester usually have nothing to re-register for, because there is no next year or semester.
You do not re-register to write exams. The term-end exam form is a separate step with its own fee and deadline.
IGNOU re-registration last date: July 2026 cycle
The July 2026 window opened on 6 May 2026 with a first deadline of 30 June 2026. IGNOU's Student Registration Division then extended it six times. The table follows the announcements on the IGNOU website.
| Announcement date | Last date announced | Late fee |
|---|---|---|
| 6 May 2026 | 30 June 2026 (window opened 6 May) | None |
| 1 July 2026 | 15 July 2026 | None |
| 16 July 2026 | 31 July 2026 | None |
| 3 August 2026 | 16 August 2026 | None |
| 17 August 2026 | 31 August 2026 | None |
| 1 September 2026 | 15 September 2026 | Rs 200 |
| 16 September 2026 | 30 September 2026 | Rs 200 |
Each extension covered all programmes in ODL and Online mode. The IGNOU re-registration portal still shows the 30 September notice, and that date has passed. If you are reading this after missing it, skip to the section on what happens next.
When January 2027 re-registration usually opens
IGNOU has not published January 2027 re-registration dates as of 13 October 2026. The last January cycle is the best guide to what to expect, and it followed the same pattern of a first deadline followed by extensions.
| Announcement date | Last date announced | Late fee |
|---|---|---|
| 16 January 2026 | 31 January 2026 (window opened 1 December 2025) | None |
| 2 February 2026 | 15 February 2026 | None |
| 2 March 2026 | 15 March 2026 | Rs 200 (this extension excluded semester-based programmes) |
| 16 March 2026 | 30 March 2026 | Rs 200 (this extension excluded semester-based programmes) |
So the January window opened at the start of December last time, and the no-late-fee period ran into mid-February. Treat that as a pattern, not a promise. Watch the IGNOU announcements page from late November and re-register in the first weeks. Extensions are common, but none is guaranteed, and the late fee kicks in for the final stretch.
IGNOU re registration fee
There is no separate re-registration charge. You pay the programme fee for the year or semester you are moving into, plus the Rs 200 late fee if you re-register in a late-fee window. IGNOU's Notification No. 103, dated 25 May 2026, fixes programme fees for both the July 2026 and January 2027 cycles, so the fee for January 2027 re-registration should match what the notification lists today.
| Programme | Fee you pay at each re-registration | Duration (minimum to maximum) |
|---|---|---|
| BA (BAM / BAG) | Rs 5,000 per year | 3 to 6 years |
| M.Com (MCOM) | Rs 10,200 per year | 2 to 4 years |
Year-wise programmes charge per year and semester-wise programmes charge per semester, so look up your own programme code in the prospectus before you pay. MBA students can see a semester-by-semester breakdown in our post on IGNOU MBA fees.
Two money rules to know. The prospectus says fee paid for re-registration "will not be refunded in any case". And SC and ST students who get a programme fee exemption still pay the late fee and other charges, because the exemption covers only the programme fee and the policy is reviewed every admission cycle.
How to re-register on the IGNOU portal
Re-registration is online only, on onlinerr.ignou.ac.in, and the portal is open to Indian and international learners.
Keep these ready before you start
Your enrolment number and programme code, copied from your ID card or fee receipt.
The mobile number and email address linked to your portal account, so the OTP reaches you.
Your programme guide, open at the list of courses for the next year or semester.
The exact fee for your programme code from the current fee notification, and a card, net banking login or UPI app to pay it.
Then work through the form. The steps below follow the instructions printed on the portal.
Open onlinerr.ignou.ac.in, read the instructions and tick that you have understood them.
If this is your first time, click New Registration and create an account. Give your own mobile number and email address, because IGNOU sends confirmations and updates there.
Log in with your username and password.
Choose your courses for the next year or semester wherever the form offers a choice. Use your programme guide, because changing a course later can cost you study time.
Pay the fee online with a card, net banking or UPI, including the BHIM app. Use your own card or account where you can.
Download or print the submitted form and the payment confirmation, and keep both.
If you cannot get the OTP, have forgotten your username or password, or need to change the mobile number or email on record, the portal tells you to approach your Regional Centre. The Regional Centre can reset the account. Do this well before the last date.
Picked the wrong elective? The prospectus allows a change of elective or course within 30 days of receiving the first set of course material, on payment of a fee, through your Regional Centre. After that window, you are stuck with your choice, so take five minutes over it now.
If the payment does not show up
Do not pay a second time straight away. The portal asks you to wait a day, check the payment status and then decide. If you do end up paying twice for the same application, IGNOU says one of the payments will be refunded to your account.
Using a cyber cafe or an agent
Plenty of students get help at a cyber cafe, and the portal's instructions cover it. Before you leave, check that the right courses are selected, that the payment went through, and that you have a printout of the form and the receipt. Never share your card details or OTP with the person helping you.
When the online form is not available
If re-registration for your programme is not available online, the prospectus says to submit the form at your own Regional Centre only. If you hand it in at a different Regional Centre and miss the date as a result, IGNOU says you have no claim for regularisation. International learners studying from India submit offline forms, if any, to the International Division.
What happens if you miss IGNOU re-registration
Missing the window stops your progress. IGNOU's B.Com (Honours) programme guide spells out the effect of not paying the yearly fee: you lose access to study material and permission to write the exams, and it may lead to cancellation of admission. Writing an exam for a course you are not properly registered in can lead to disciplinary action.
If you missed 30 September 2026, do three things now. Speak to your Regional Centre about the next window that applies to your programme. Keep writing exams for courses you are already registered in, if you still have pending papers, through the December 2026 exam form. And keep the fee ready so you can re-register in the first week the next window opens.
Minimum and maximum duration
Every IGNOU programme has a minimum and a maximum duration. A three-year BA can be stretched to six years, and a two-year M.Com to four, so one missed year does not end your degree. The clock keeps running, though. The prospectus says a learner who has used up the maximum duration should not apply for a term-end exam without getting re-registered, or the result will be withheld. Learners with a disability of 40 percent or more get two extra years beyond the maximum duration.
Re-registration, exams and your grade card
Re-registration only moves you into the next year or semester. It does not enter you for any exam. IGNOU holds term-end exams in June and December, and you fill a fresh exam form, with a fee per course, for every session.
Before you choose courses for the new year, look at your grade card. It shows which courses you have completed and which are still pending, so you know what to carry into your next exam form. Our guide to the IGNOU grade card explains how to check it and read each grade. If you are new to IGNOU, the July 2026 admission post covers fresh admission, which runs on a different portal, and the IGNOU institute page lists the programmes and modes on offer.
Frequently asked questions
What is the last date for IGNOU re-registration?
For the July 2026 session, the last date was 30 September 2026 with a Rs 200 late fee. IGNOU has not announced January 2027 dates as of 13 October 2026. The January 2026 window opened on 1 December 2025.
What is the IGNOU re-registration fee?
You pay the programme fee for your next year or semester, for example Rs 5,000 a year for the BA (BAM/BAG) under Notification No. 103. A Rs 200 late fee applies in late-fee windows. The fee is not refundable.
Can I re-register if I failed or missed my exams?
Yes. The IGNOU prospectus says you should re-register on schedule whether or not you appeared in the exams and whether or not you passed. Pending courses can be cleared in later term-end exams.
Is re-registration the same as the IGNOU exam form?
No. Re-registration registers you for the next year or semester. The exam form enters you for the June or December term-end exams and has its own fee and deadline.
What if I cannot log in to the IGNOU re-registration portal?
If you are not getting the OTP or have forgotten your username or password, contact your Regional Centre. It can reset your account and update your mobile number or email.
