The short answer
UGC lists 1,301 universities as of 13 October 2026: 57 central, 523 state, 560 state private and 161 deemed to be universities. Under Section 22 of the UGC Act, degrees can be awarded only by universities set up by a central or state law, deemed universities, and institutions empowered by an Act of Parliament, such as the IITs, NITs and AIIMS. The first two groups are on this list. For online or distance study, the programme also needs UGC-DEB approval.

Where this data comes from
Every university here comes from UGC’s own lists of central, state, state private and deemed to be universities on ugc.gov.in(opens in a new tab). Fake universities and the compliance notes (PhD regulations, ombudsperson, defaulter universities) come from UGC’s list of HEIs violating regulations(opens in a new tab). Names, addresses and websites are as UGC publishes them; online and distance approvals are matched from UGC-DEB’s lists. Checked 13 October 2026.
Who may award degrees is set by Section 22 of the UGC Act, as UGC explains in its public notice on fake universities(opens in a new tab). Institutions set up by an Act of Parliament are listed separately in the Ministry of Education list of Institutions of National Importance(opens in a new tab).

Questions students ask
How do I check if a university is recognised by UGC?
Search for it in the list on this page, which carries every university on UGC’s own list (1,301 as of 13 October 2026), or check ugc.gov.in directly. Institutions set up by an Act of Parliament, such as the IITs, NITs and AIIMS, award degrees without appearing on this list; any other institution that calls itself a university must be on it.
What is the difference between 2(f) and 12B?
Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 covers universities set up by a central or state law; being on that list means it can award degrees. Section 12B is a separate declaration that the university is fit to receive grants from UGC and the central government. 12B is about funding; a 2(f) university without 12B still awards valid degrees.
Are deemed universities recognised by UGC?
Yes. Deemed to be universities are declared by the central government under Section 3 of the UGC Act on UGC’s advice, and they can award their own degrees. UGC lists them separately as “Deemed to be Universities”.
Can a UGC-recognised university offer online or distance degrees?
Not automatically. Online and distance (ODL) programmes need separate approval from UGC’s Distance Education Bureau, programme by programme. Use our UGC-DEB directory to check a specific online or distance programme.
What is a fake university?
UGC publishes a list of institutions that call themselves universities without being set up by law or recognised, and says they cannot award degrees. The list had 32 names as of February 2026. See our page on UGC’s fake universities list.
