The short answer

CGPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester SGPAs: multiply each SGPA by that semester’s credits, add the results, and divide by the total credits. If every semester carries the same credits, it is simply the average of your SGPAs.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Add a row for each semester and enter its SGPA.

  2. 2

    Enter each semester’s total credits from your grade card. Leave credits equal if you do not know them.

  3. 3

    Your CGPA updates as you type, with the full calculation shown underneath.

The CGPA formula

CGPA = Σ (SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ (semester credits)

This is the credit-weighted method in UGC’s Choice Based Credit System guidelines: a semester with more credits counts for more. Taking the first two semesters of UGC’s own illustration (20 credits at SGPA 6.9 and 20 credits at 6.7), CGPA = (138 + 134) ÷ 40 = 6.8. When every semester carries the same credits, the result equals a simple average of your SGPAs.

Questions students ask

How is CGPA calculated?

CGPA = Σ(SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ(semester credits). A semester with more credits counts for more. Under UGC’s Choice Based Credit System this is the standard method.

Is CGPA the average of SGPAs?

Only when every semester has the same number of credits. If credits differ, a simple average is wrong; use the credit-weighted method this calculator uses.

What is a good CGPA?

It depends on what you are applying for. Each programme and employer sets its own cut-off, often written as a minimum percentage in graduation, so convert your CGPA with your university’s rule and compare it with the exact eligibility line.
