The short answer

Your marks percentage is total marks obtained divided by total maximum marks, multiplied by 100. If you scored 412 out of 500, that is 82.4%. Add each subject below and the calculator totals it for you.

How to use it

  1. 1

Add each subject with the marks you scored and the maximum marks.

  2. 2

The total and percentage update as you type.

  3. 3

Use the result for forms that ask for an aggregate percentage.

The marks percentage formula

Percentage = total marks scored ÷ total maximum marks × 100

Add marks first, then divide. Averaging subject percentages gives the wrong answer when papers carry different maximum marks, because a 50-mark paper would count as much as a 100-mark one.

Questions students ask

How do I calculate the percentage of marks?

Percentage = (total marks obtained ÷ total maximum marks) × 100. For 412 out of 500, that is 82.4%.

Should I include every subject?

Include the subjects the form asks about. Some admissions use the best five subjects or only core subjects; read the eligibility note before you calculate.

How do I calculate percentage if subjects have different maximum marks?

Add all marks obtained and all maximum marks separately, then divide. Do not average the subject percentages, because that over-weights small papers.
