You can check your IGNOU grade card free on gradecard.ignou.ac.in. Pick your programme category, select the programme code, type your enrolment number and press Search. The page shows your assignment and term-end marks for every course and whether IGNOU counts each course as complete. It is an information copy, not your final grade card.
How to check your IGNOU grade card online
The grade card lives on its own portal, separate from the term-end result page. As of October 2026 the IGNOU grade card portal asks for only three things, and none of them is a password. Keep your ID card or fee receipt next to you so you copy the enrolment number and programme code exactly.
Open gradecard.ignou.ac.in and find the box labelled Grade Card Status for.
Choose your category from the four options: BCA, MCA, PGDCA, the new-programme MBA and MBF; BDP, BA, B.Com, B.Sc and associate programmes; CBCS programmes; or Other programmes.
Select your programme code from the second list. It only fills in after you pick a category.
Type your enrolment number. The field takes up to 10 characters, so check that you have not dropped a digit.
Press Search. Your grade card status opens on a separate page, dated with the day it was generated.
If no record comes up, check the category first. An older BA or B.Com learner admitted under the BDP scheme and a newer learner on a CBCS degree sit under different options. Try the other category before you assume your record is missing.
Grade card, term-end result and marksheet are not the same
IGNOU publishes three different records, and students often mix them up. The term-end result shows marks for one exam session. The grade card shows your whole programme so far, course by course. The final grade card and the provisional certificate are issued only when you finish.
| Record | What it shows | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Term-end result | Marks for the courses you wrote in one June or December exam, plus re-evaluation results | termendresult.ignou.ac.in, by choosing TEE or Re-evaluation and entering your enrolment number |
| Grade card status | Every course in your programme with assignment marks, term-end marks and a completion status | gradecard.ignou.ac.in |
| Final grade card and provisional certificate | Your complete record once all prescribed components are updated | Issued by IGNOU after you complete the programme |
The online status page says this in plain words: the status is indicative only and cannot replace the final grade card, which is issued after you complete the programme. The page also carries a disclaimer that the electronic copy has no legal validity. So do not submit a screenshot to an employer as proof of a degree. Use it to track your progress and catch problems early.
How to read your IGNOU grade card
Each row on the grade card is one course, shown by its course code. Next to it you will see the marks from your assignments, then the term-end theory marks, then term-end practical marks if the course has a practical, and finally a status. A course counts as complete only when every component it needs has been updated and cleared.
Why two separate columns? Most IGNOU programmes judge you on continuous evaluation and the term-end examination (TEE) separately. The 2025 B.Com (Honours) programme guide gives assignments a 30 percent weightage and the TEE 70 percent in the final result, and the BLIS guide uses the same 30 and 70 split. A strong assignment score cannot rescue a weak exam. The B.Com guide says the two scores are not complementary for qualifying a course.
Pass marks depend on your programme
There is no single IGNOU pass mark. Your programme guide decides it, which is why two friends at IGNOU can quote different numbers and both be right. These are the rules from three current IGNOU guides:
| Programme guide | What you need to pass a course |
|---|---|
| B.Com (Honours), BCOMF, 2025 | At least 35 percent (grade D) in assignments and in the TEE of each course, and 35 percent overall in each course |
| Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) | At least 40 percent in continuous evaluation and 40 percent in the TEE of each course, separately |
| School of Management Studies PG diplomas, 2025 | An overall C grade (50 to 59.9 percent band) in each course |
Find your own programme guide on the IGNOU website and read the evaluation chapter once. It takes ten minutes and tells you exactly what each number on your grade card has to reach.
IGNOU grading system: what each grade means
IGNOU uses two grading scales. Most programmes use a five-point letter scale. Bachelor's degrees under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) use a ten-point scale that follows UGC guidelines. Both are printed in the IGNOU Common Prospectus for July 2026.
| Letter grade | Qualitative level | Grade point | Percentage band (SOMS PG diplomas) |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Excellent | 5 | 80 percent and above |
| B | Very good | 4 | 60 to 79.9 percent |
| C | Good | 3 | 50 to 59.9 percent |
| D | Average | 2 | 40 to 49.9 percent |
| E | Unsatisfactory | 1 | Below 40 percent |
For bachelor's and master's degrees the prospectus says IGNOU normally marks in numbers and converts them to these grades later. If you need numerical marks and a division (I, II or Pass) for a job or an admission form, the university provides them on request.
| Letter grade | Grade point | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| O (Outstanding) | 10 | 85 and above |
| A+ (Excellent) | 9 | 75 to below 85 |
| A (Very good) | 8 | 65 to below 75 |
| B+ (Good) | 7 | 55 to below 65 |
| B (Above average) | 6 | 50 to below 55 |
| C (Average) | 5 | 40 to below 50 |
| D (Pass) | 4 | 35 to below 40 |
| F (Fail) | 0 | Below 35 |
| Ab (Absent) | 0 | Absent |
On the CBCS scale, D is a pass and F is a fail. Ab means you were marked absent for that exam, which counts as zero, so you will need to fill the exam form again and write it. If a form or employer asks for a percentage and you only have grade points, our CGPA to percentage calculator gives a quick estimate. Where an exact figure matters, ask IGNOU for marks and division instead of converting yourself.
IGNOU grade card status: what to do in each case
Most worried messages about the grade card fall into a handful of situations. Here is what each one usually means and the next step that fixes it.
| What you see | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Course not shown as complete, but assignment marks are there | The term-end component is still pending: not written, not cleared, or not yet updated | Check the term-end result for that session. If you have not cleared it, fill the exam form for the next TEE |
| Term-end result declared, but the grade card has not changed | The grade card is updated separately from the term-end result and has not caught up yet | Wait a few weeks, then raise it with the Student Evaluation Division through iGRAM if it still has not moved |
| Assignment marks missing or lower than your evaluated sheet | The study centre has not sent the correct award list to headquarters | Ask your study centre coordinator to forward the correct award list to the Student Evaluation Division |
| F grade, or marks below your programme's pass mark | You have not qualified in that component | Resubmit the assignment or rewrite the TEE, depending on which part you failed |
| Ab against a course | You were marked absent in that exam | Fill the exam form for the next session and write the paper |
| Name or other personal details spelled wrongly | A data entry error in your admission record | Ask your Regional Centre to correct it before your degree is awarded |
Assignment marks missing from the grade card
This one comes up often, and IGNOU's programme guides give the same fix. If the score on your evaluated assignment sheet is not reflected, or not entered at all, contact the coordinator of your study centre and ask them to forward the correct award list to the Student Evaluation Division at headquarters. Keep your copy of the submitted assignment and the evaluated sheet, because the B.Com guide warns they may be asked for. Assignments are not re-evaluated, except for factual errors by the evaluator.
If you did not get a pass grade in an assignment, you submit it again using the fresh assignment for the current session. Once you have passed an assignment, you cannot resubmit it to improve the grade.
Term-end marks missing or wrong
IGNOU's Common Prospectus lists "discrepancy in grade card, non updation of grade/marks in the grade card" as an issue for the Student Evaluation Division. The quickest route is a grievance on iGRAM, IGNOU's grievance portal at igram.ignou.ac.in, where you can also track the reply. Quote your enrolment number, programme code, course code and the exam session.
Before you raise it, rule out the basics. Did you fill the exam form and pay the fee for that course? Were your assignments submitted on time? The prospectus says IGNOU can withhold a result if your registration was not valid, assignments were missing, the minimum time had not passed or the exam fee was unpaid. A withheld result looks like missing marks on the grade card.
Name or personal details wrong
Spelling mistakes made at the data entry stage are corrected at your Regional Centre, which then sends the corrected data to the Student Registration Division. The prospectus is clear that requests to correct or change a name are entertained only before your degree, diploma or certificate is awarded. Fix it now, not after convocation.
Re-evaluation and a copy of your answer script
If you think your term-end marks are too low, you can apply online through the IGNOU re-evaluation portal once the result is declared. As of October 2026 the portal is taking applications for the June 2026 and December 2025 exams.
| Service | Time limit | Key rule |
|---|---|---|
| Re-evaluation of answer script | Within 40 days of the result being declared | Allowed for TEE theory papers only, not projects, practicals, labs, workshops, assignments or seminars |
| Copy of answer script | Within 30 days of the result being declared | Sent as a scanned copy to your email or as a photocopy by post |
The time limits come from an IGNOU notification dated 6 April 2023, in force from the June 2023 exams. Some older programme guides still print the earlier limits, so go by the notification. Re-evaluation is not offered for the multiple choice courses on OMR sheets that the portal lists. After you save the form, the portal generates a payment link, and you pay by debit card, credit card or net banking.
A practical tip from the portal itself: if you want to see your answer script, apply for the copy before re-evaluation or apply for both together. Once a script has gone for re-evaluation, the evaluation centre cannot send you a copy. The B.Com guide says IGNOU keeps the better of the original and re-evaluated scores.
When to fill the next exam form
IGNOU holds term-end exams twice a year, in June and December, and you fill a fresh exam form every time. If your grade card shows a course you have not cleared, add it to your next form. The December 2026 form, its late fee and its dates are covered in our IGNOU exam form guide.
Keep an eye on your registration too. You can write a course only while your registration for it is valid, and that depends on paying for each new year or semester on time. Our IGNOU re-registration guide explains who needs to re-register, the last dates and the fee. For programme options, fees and modes, see the IGNOU institute page.
Improving a division after you finish
Bachelor's students who have completed the programme can sometimes improve their division by rewriting term-end papers. In the B.Com guide this is open only to learners who fall less than 2 percent short of a first or second division, within six months of the final grade card, and only for TEE papers. Check your own guide for the exact rule before you apply.
Frequently asked questions
How can I check my IGNOU grade card?
Go to gradecard.ignou.ac.in, choose your programme category, select your programme code, enter your enrolment number and press Search. No password is needed.
What is the pass mark in IGNOU?
It depends on your programme. The B.Com (Honours) guide needs 35 percent in assignments and the TEE separately, while the BLIS guide needs 40 percent in each. Check the evaluation chapter of your own programme guide.
Why does my IGNOU grade card not show my latest result?
The grade card is updated separately from the term-end result, so a new result can take time to appear. Check the term-end result portal first. If marks still have not moved after a few weeks, raise a grievance with the Student Evaluation Division on iGRAM.
Is the online IGNOU grade card valid as proof of my degree?
No. The portal says the status is indicative only and has no legal validity. IGNOU issues the final grade card and provisional certificate after you complete the programme.
What does Ab mean on an IGNOU grade card?
Ab means absent, which counts as zero on the CBCS scale. Fill the exam form for the next June or December session and write that course again.
What should I do if my assignment marks are missing?
Ask your study centre coordinator to forward the correct award list to the Student Evaluation Division at IGNOU headquarters. Keep your evaluated assignment sheet as proof.
