Human resource management courses come at three levels in India: a BBA with HR papers or an HR specialisation, a one-to-two-year PG diploma, and a two-year MBA in HR. Pick by where you are now. A Class 12 student starts with the BBA, a graduate who wants HR skills quickly takes the diploma, and a graduate aiming for a manager's seat takes the MBA in HR.
The three routes overlap more than their names suggest, so this guide compares them on what you actually study, how long they take and what the cost looks like at IGNOU, whose programme pages publish the details openly.
Human resource management courses at a glance
| Route | Entry requirement | Duration | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| BBA (HR as a specialisation or elective papers) | Class 12 in any stream | 3 years; IGNOU BBA allows 36 to 72 months | Students who want HR as one option among business careers |
| PG diploma in HR management | Graduation (check the university's own rule) | IGNOU PGDHRM: 12 to 24 months | Graduates and working staff who need HR skills without a full degree |
| MBA in HR (HRM) | Bachelor's degree; IGNOU asks 50% marks (45% for reserved categories) | 2 years; IGNOU MBA (HRM) allows 24 to 48 months | Graduates aiming at HR manager and HR business partner roles |
BBA: the first step if you are in Class 12
A BBA is a general business degree, and HR is usually a slice of it, not the whole of it. The BBA in human resource management page lists the specialised version, and our BBA full form and course guide shows the subjects every BBA student covers.
IGNOU's BBA shows how thin the HR content can be in a general programme. Its page lists "Managing Human Resources" as one paper in semester 3, next to marketing, economics and e-commerce. The eligibility is Class 12 in any discipline, and the fee is shown as Rs 10,500 per year for national students, with exam fees extra. If you already know you want HR, choose a BBA that names HR in its title or electives. If you are unsure, a general BBA keeps doors open and you can specialise in the MBA.
PG diploma in human resource management
A PG diploma is the shortest route to formal HR training after graduation. IGNOU's PGDHRM is taught in English through open and distance learning, with a minimum of 12 months and a maximum of 24. Its programme page does not show an eligibility line or a fee at the time of writing, so read the current prospectus on the admission portal before you plan around it.
The page does list the nine theory courses, which is the best guide to what a diploma teaches:
Social Processes and Behavioural Issues
Human Resource Development
Human Resource Planning
Employment Relations
Managing Change in Organisations
Organisational Dynamics
Wage and Salary Administration
Labour Laws
International Human Resource Management
Compare that list with a university you are considering. A diploma worth paying for covers labour law and pay administration, because those are the papers an HR executive uses daily. Our PG diploma in HR management page has the other universities offering one.
MBA in human resource management
The MBA is the route to HR manager and HR business partner roles. You study the same core management subjects as every MBA student, then specialise in the second year. IGNOU's MBA (HRM) is a useful example because its fee and course list are public.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Duration | Minimum 24 months, maximum 48 months |
| Eligibility | Bachelor's degree of at least 3 years with 50% marks (45% for reserved categories) |
| Semesters 1, 2 and 4 | Rs 16,000 each |
| Semester 3 | Rs 18,000 |
| Full programme | Rs 66,000, exam fees not included |
| HR courses | Organisational Theory and Design, Human Resource Development, Industrial and Employment Relations, Compensation and Rewards Management, Human Resource Planning, Organisational Development and Change, Organisational Dynamics, International Human Resource Management |
The first year is shared management study: accounting, marketing, business laws, financial management and similar papers. That matters if you come from an arts background and expect pure HR from day one. For fee comparisons with private online MBAs, read our IGNOU MBA fees guide, and for pay across specialisations see MBA in finance vs marketing vs HR.
Labour law is the paper to watch right now
Every HR course above includes labour law or employment relations, and the law underneath them has changed. The Ministry of Labour's release on PIB states that the four Labour Codes were made effective from 21 November 2025, rationalising 29 existing labour laws, and that the relevant provisions of the older Acts continue during the transition period. Read the PIB release for the exact position.
Practical tip: ask any university you shortlist whether its labour law paper has been revised for the Codes. A course still teaching only the old Acts will leave you reading the new rules on your own on the first day of the job.
Which HR course should you choose?
Class 12, unsure of the field: a general BBA, then decide on HR during the degree.
Class 12, sure about HR: a BBA that names human resource management, followed by the MBA.
Graduate in a non-HR job, want a quick move: a PG diploma, and check whether the employer you target values it.
Graduate aiming for manager roles: the MBA in HR, on campus or through an online MBA if you cannot leave work.
Working in recruitment or payroll already: the MBA, because experience plus the degree is what moves you into management.
Whichever route you take for an online or distance programme, check that the university and the exact programme appear in the UGC-DEB approved list for your admission session before paying a rupee.
