An executive MBA in India is a management degree for people who already have several years of work experience. It comes in three forms: a one-year full-time residential programme at an IIM, a part-time or weekend programme at a business school, and an online programme from a UGC-DEB entitled university. The right one depends on how long you can step away from work.
The word "executive" does not describe a separate qualification. It describes who the class is built for. A regular MBA admits graduates with little or no experience, while an executive MBA expects you to bring real workplace problems into the classroom. If you are comparing it with a regular degree, our guide to MBA for working professionals sets the options side by side.

IIM executive MBA: eligibility, tests and fees
The IIM programmes are the best known executive MBA options in the country, and they are demanding to get into. They are one-year, full-time and residential, so you leave your job for the year.
IIM Ahmedabad's one-year MBA for executives (PGPX) asks for a bachelor's degree in any discipline, a minimum age of 25 and at least four years of full-time work experience after graduation. Its 2026-27 PGPX brochure names GMAT and GRE as the accepted tests and does not mention CAT. The brochure lists a total fee of Rs 34.15 lakh for the 2025-26 batch with single accommodation, excluding the international immersion, travel and utilities.
IIM Bangalore's Executive Post Graduate Programme (EPGP) is also one year, full-time and residential, and it leads to an MBA degree. It asks for at least five years of work experience, reached before 31 March 2027 for the current cycle, and a valid GMAT or GRE score is mandatory with no minimum score. IIMB states that CAT is not accepted. Its FAQ is clear that the programme is not offered in distance mode. IIM Calcutta runs a similar one-year residential programme for executives, so read its current admission page before you plan.
Class sizes are small, which tells you how selective these programmes are. IIM Bangalore reports 74 students in its 2026 EPGP batch with an average of 5 years of experience, and IIM Ahmedabad lists 157 students in its 2025-26 PGPX cohort. Whether the cost is worth it depends on your plan. Someone aiming for a senior role in a large company or a move into consulting may see a clear use for the brand, while someone who wants a degree for promotion inside the same employer may not need it.
Part-time and weekend executive MBA programmes
Many business schools run weekend or evening programmes for working managers, usually in the city where they are based. These sit between the full-time IIM route and online study: you attend class in person, but you keep your job. There is no single national rule for them, so each school sets its own experience requirement, test and fee.
Before you pay anything, ask three questions in writing. Does the programme end in an MBA degree or a PGDM, which is a diploma-level award? Who approves it, and can you find that approval on the regulator's own website? And how many weekends a month do you actually have to attend? A shortlist of two or three schools with those answers beats a long list of brochures. If a weekend programme asks for travel every few days, the real cost is higher than the fee.
Online executive MBA: what to check before you enrol
An online executive MBA keeps you in your job and in your city. Classes are live or recorded, and you finish assignments on your own schedule. This is the route most working professionals choose, and it is also the one where checking approval matters most.
UGC-DEB's student FAQ is direct on two points. Students cannot enrol in any ODL or online programme without a valid DEB-ID, and a DEB-ID cannot be created without an ABC-ID. The same FAQ tells learners to see the UGC-DEB recognition status of the institution before taking admission, and UGC-DEB publishes the lists of recognised institutions. Our steps for creating your ABC ID and the DEB ID steps walk through the process.
To check a specific university and programme, use our UGC-approved online MBA list and follow the method in how to check if an online university is UGC-DEB approved. The Online Executive MBA course page lists the universities and specialisations we track, and the general Online MBA page covers the standard programme for those with less experience.
Which executive MBA route fits you
Choose the IIM one-year route if you have the required years of experience, can take a year off, can score well on GMAT or GRE, and want a full-time, campus-based year.
Choose a part-time or weekend programme if you live in a city with a good business school, want classroom interaction and can give up most weekends.
Choose an online programme if you cannot leave your job, want a lower cost, and are comfortable studying without a fixed campus routine. Read the difference in online MBA vs distance MBA first.
Skip an executive MBA for now if your goal is simply a pay rise in your current job. Look at what your employer actually values, and read whether an online MBA can help you get promoted before you spend.
Cost and planning your executive MBA
Fees range from a few lakh for online programmes to tens of lakh for a residential IIM year, and the larger cost for the IIM route is the year of lost salary. Work out the total, including travel, hostel and any immersion trip, and then test the monthly repayment with the education loan EMI calculator. Check whether the offer is from a school you can verify, and read the refund terms before you pay the first instalment.
If you are still deciding between a regular and an executive degree, compare how each programme ranks on the NIRF management ranking before you shortlist, and then match the experience rule to your own years at work.
Frequently asked questions
What is an executive MBA in India?
It is an MBA-level programme designed for people with several years of work experience. It runs as a one-year full-time programme at an IIM, as a part-time or weekend programme, or online.
How many years of experience do you need for an executive MBA?
It depends on the programme. IIM Ahmedabad's PGPX asks for at least four years of full-time work experience after graduation, and IIM Bangalore's EPGP asks for at least five years. Part-time and online programmes set their own rules.
Is GMAT compulsory for an executive MBA?
For IIM Bangalore's EPGP a valid GMAT or GRE score is mandatory, with no minimum score. IIM Ahmedabad's PGPX brochure names GMAT and GRE as the accepted tests. Many online programmes admit on marks and experience instead.
Can you do an executive MBA while working?
Yes, through a part-time, weekend or online programme. The IIM one-year programmes are full-time and residential, so they need a break from work.
Is an online executive MBA valid in India?
It is valid when the university is recognised and entitled by UGC-DEB for that programme. You also need a DEB-ID, which needs an ABC-ID. Check the status on the UGC-DEB site before you pay.
Is an executive MBA better than a regular MBA?
Neither is better in general. An executive MBA suits people with experience who want to move up, and a regular MBA suits fresh graduates who want to start a management career.
