The B Com full form is Bachelor of Commerce, an undergraduate degree built around accounting, business law, tax and finance. It usually runs for three years, with a four-year honours option at universities that follow the NEP structure. IGNOU accepts students with 10+2 in any discipline, while many colleges prefer commerce students.
That covers the meaning. The questions behind the search are usually which subjects you will study, who can apply, how long it takes and where the degree leads. This guide answers each one, using IGNOU's published B.Com programme guide and the University of Delhi's commerce faculty page as the official reference points, both read in October 2026.
B Com full form and meaning
B.Com stands for Bachelor of Commerce. In Hindi it is written as बैचलर ऑफ कॉमर्स, or वाणिज्य स्नातक. Commerce here means the business side of the economy: how money is recorded, how companies are governed, how taxes work and how goods and services are traded.
It is a degree awarded by a university, and it is the usual first step towards careers in accounting, audit, tax, banking and corporate finance. It is also the common base for professional courses such as CA, CMA and CS, which you can start alongside or after it.

What is B Com and which types exist?
Most universities offer the degree in two main forms, and a few add specialised versions. Knowing the difference before you apply saves a wrong choice.
B.Com (General or Programme): a broad commerce degree that mixes accounting, law, tax, management and economics, with electives. It suits most students.
B.Com (Honours): a deeper, more focused version. Our guide to B.Com Honours subjects and eligibility explains how it differs and which colleges ask for maths or accountancy.
Specialised B.Com: some universities offer versions with a lean towards areas such as accounting and finance, banking and insurance, taxation or computer applications. Check the paper list, because the label alone tells you little.
B Com subjects: what you study
The names of papers change from university to university, but the core of a commerce degree is similar everywhere: financial accounting, business organisation, business law, business mathematics and statistics, tax, company law, cost and management accounting. IGNOU's programme guide gives a clear semester map, so it is used here as the reference.
| Semester | Subjects |
|---|---|
| 1 | Business Organisation and Management; Overview of Retailing; Environmental Studies; Introductory Microeconomics (or another course) |
| 2 | Financial Accounting; Personal Selling and Salesmanship; Computer Application in Business; Value Education |
| 3 | Business Mathematics and Statistics; Business Law; Logistics Management; English Communication Skills (or a Modern Indian Language) |
| 4 | Income Tax Law and Practice; Principles of Marketing; Entrepreneurship; E-Commerce |
| 5 | Corporate Accounting; Company Law; Redressal of Consumer Grievances; Managing Stress |
| 6 | Cost Accounting; Management Accounting; Introduction to NGO Management; Data Analysis |
The University of Delhi follows its own structure under the NEP-based UGCF. Its commerce faculty publishes syllabus files for semesters 1 to 8 for B.Com, B.Com (Hons) and BA with Commerce on its UGCF B.Com programme page. Our B.Com Honours post lists DU's honours papers semester by semester.
B Com subjects list by year
B Com subjects in the first year
Year one lays the base. You learn how a business is organised and managed, how transactions are recorded in financial accounting, and a first look at economics, along with environmental studies and basic computer use in business. If accounts is new to you, this is the year to practise daily, because every later paper builds on it.
B Com subjects in the second year
Year two brings in the papers that feel most like a profession: business law, business mathematics and statistics, income tax, marketing and e-commerce. The tax paper in particular connects directly to jobs and to CA, CMA and CS studies.
B Com subjects in the third year
Year three is where accounting gets deeper. Corporate accounting, company law, cost accounting and management accounting sit here, with data analysis and an NGO management paper. If you plan to continue to an MBA or a professional course, your marks in these papers matter most.
B Com eligibility: who can apply
The basic condition is a pass in Class 12. IGNOU's programme page states the requirement as 10+2 in any discipline, so arts and science students can join without a commerce background. Campus colleges are less uniform. Delhi University's undergraduate bulletin for 2025-26 says candidates must appear in CUET (UG) in subjects they have studied or passed in Class XII, and subject conditions differ by programme.
If you come from the arts or science stream, expect to spend your first semester catching up on accounts. That is manageable with regular practice. If you are applying to a campus college, read that college's own admission notice for the subject and mark requirements, since they change each year.
How long is a B Com: 3 years or 4 years?
Both exist now. The older pattern is three years and six semesters. Under the NEP structure, universities can run an eight-semester programme with exit points. IGNOU's guide shows how this works in practice: a certificate after year one, a diploma after year two, the B.Com degree after year three on 120 credits, and the honours degree after a fourth year on 160 credits.
Before you pay any fee, ask which version the college runs and what certificate you receive at each exit. A three-year B.Com is enough for most jobs and for CA, CMA, CS and MBA entry. The fourth year makes sense if you want a research or postgraduate route.
B Com fees: what it costs
IGNOU is the low-cost anchor. Its programme guide shows Rs 4,500 a year and its programme page shows Rs 5,000 a year for Indian students, with examination fees charged separately, so check the current figure on the registration page before you pay. Private universities and campus colleges set their own fees, which vary widely, so compare the total for the full programme and not only the first year.
Regular, distance or online B Com
| Route | How you study | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Regular college | Daily classes on campus, internal exams, placements at some colleges | Students who can attend every day after Class 12 |
| Distance (ODL) | Study material, assignments and scheduled exams, often with study centres | Learners who want low fees and self-paced study, such as IGNOU students |
| Online | Live or recorded classes on a learning platform. IGNOU lists an online B.Com on its BCOMFOL programme page | Working learners who need flexible timing and some teaching support |
Any online or distance degree is valid only when the university is entitled by UGC-DEB to offer it, and learners need a DEB ID, which in turn needs an ABC ID. See how to create your DEB ID and create your ABC ID, and use our guide to check whether an online university is UGC-DEB approved. Fee and eligibility details for the online route are in our online B.Com course guide, and you can browse the online B.Com and distance B.Com course pages.
Jobs and next steps after B Com
Typical first roles are accounts executive, audit assistant at a CA firm, tax assistant, banking operations and junior financial analyst. An internship in a finance team or CA firm during the degree helps your first application more than any single paper.
The degree also leads into professional and postgraduate routes. You can read about the CMA course, the Company Secretary course and the ACCA qualification, or compare every option in what to do after B.Com. If management appeals more, the MBA full form guide explains eligibility and routes.
B Com or BBA: which should you pick?
Choose B.Com if you like numbers, tax and accounting and may want CA, CMA or CS. Choose BBA if you want general management, marketing or people roles early. Both lead to an MBA. Our comparison of BBA vs B.Com sets out the trade-offs.
How to choose your B Com step by step
Decide your goal: a professional course such as CA, a job soon after graduation, or an MBA later.
Pick the route that fits your time and budget: regular, distance or online.
Check the paper list, not only the course name, and ask whether the programme is three or four years.
For online and distance study, confirm the university is entitled by UGC-DEB and that you have a DEB ID.
Compare the full programme fee, read the university's own fee page and note every deadline.
