What to do after BCom comes down to one question: do you want a professional licence or a postgraduate degree? If you want a licence, CA and CMA both accept commerce graduates directly. If you want a degree, M.Com suits depth in accounts and finance, and an MBA suits management roles. If money is tight, work first and study alongside.

Your main options after BCom
CA (Chartered Accountancy): a professional route run by ICAI, with Intermediate and Final levels. Commerce graduates can enter at Intermediate if they meet the marks rule below.
CMA (Cost and Management Accountancy): a professional route run by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI), open to graduates for direct admission to Intermediate.
CS (Company Secretary): a professional route run by ICSI, focused on company law and compliance. Its eligibility rules and registration windows change, so read them at icsi.edu before you plan around them.
M.Com: a two-year master's that deepens accounting, finance, taxation and research. See the online M.Com and distance M.Com options.
MBA: a management degree that moves you toward finance, marketing, HR or operations roles. See the online MBA page.
Work first, then upgrade: take a job in accounts, audit, banking or sales and add a postgraduate degree in the evenings or on weekends.
Can you do CA directly after BCom?
Yes, in most cases. ICAI's own FAQ on the current scheme says graduates and postgraduates in commerce with at least 55 percent marks can register for CA Intermediate through the direct entry route. Graduates from other streams need at least 60 percent. You do not have to clear Foundation first if you take this route.
A few details from the ICAI FAQ, last updated 29 July 2026, are worth knowing before you decide. If you are in your final year of BCom, you can register provisionally, but you become eligible for the Intermediate exam only after finishing graduation with the required marks and completing eight months of study from the date of registration. Intermediate registration costs Rs 18,000 for both groups and Final registration costs Rs 22,000, as of that update. The Intermediate exam is held three times a year, in January, May and September, and has six papers across two groups.
If your BCom marks are below 55 percent, ICAI also lists a Foundation route into Intermediate. Check the current Foundation rules on the same FAQ, since they are separate from the direct entry rule.
Is CMA a good alternative to CA after BCom?
CMA is the cost and management accounting route, and it leans towards costing, budgeting and internal decision support rather than statutory audit. On its course eligibility page, ICMAI lists a degree from any recognised university as a qualifying exam for direct admission to Intermediate, and says candidates awaiting degree results may apply provisionally. That page does not state a marks condition, so confirm the detailed rules in the ICMAI prospectus before you pay any fee.
Choose CMA if you like numbers tied to operations, manufacturing or pricing, and you are comfortable studying while working. You can sit for CA and CMA, but doing both at once is heavy, so most students pick one first.
M.Com or MBA after BCom: which is better?
Neither is better in general. M.Com keeps you inside commerce. It suits you if you want to teach, prepare for research or government accounts roles, or build deeper expertise in taxation and finance. An MBA widens the door into management roles and suits you if you want to manage teams, products or business units, not only books.
If you are already working, an online or distance route lets you keep your salary. Read online MBA vs distance MBA to see how the two modes differ, and check whether an online degree is valid in India before you pay a fee. For MBA specifically, MBA for working professionals lays out the formats. What to do after BCom if you want a job first
Plenty of commerce graduates start work straight away and study later. Roles in accounts, billing, audit support, banking operations and sales are open to BCom graduates, and a job gives you a clearer idea of whether you want a licence, a master's or a switch. The risk is drifting. Pick a deadline, such as one year, to decide your next qualification.

Who should choose what
Choose CA if you scored 55 percent or more, enjoy audit, tax and accounting, and can commit to a multi-level exam route.
Choose CMA if you prefer costing and management accounting over statutory audit.
Choose CS if company law and compliance interest you, after checking the current rules on icsi.edu.
Choose M.Com if you want depth in commerce, teaching or research, or you plan to follow it with UGC NET.
Choose an MBA if you want to move into management, and consider the online route if you must keep earning.
Choose work first if you are unsure, need income, or want to test a field before spending on fees.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best course after BCom for a good job?
There is no single best course. CA and CMA lead to specialist accounting roles, an MBA leads to management roles, and M.Com supports teaching and finance careers. Pick by the kind of work you want in five years, and do not choose by fee or hype alone.
Can I do CA after BCom with less than 55 percent?
The direct entry route in ICAI's FAQ requires at least 55 percent for commerce graduates. If you are below that, the Foundation route is the alternative, and you should read its current eligibility on the ICAI FAQ before registering.
Can I do an MBA after BCom without work experience?
Yes, a BCom degree is a graduation qualification and most MBA programmes accept graduates from any stream. Entry rules vary by university, so check each programme page and compare fees and learning mode carefully.
Can I study M.Com online after BCom?
Yes, if the university is entitled to offer online programmes by UGC-DEB. Check the entitlement list before paying, and read our guide on how to check if an online university is UGC-DEB approved.
Fees, dates and eligibility rules change every session, so confirm the current figures on the official ICAI, ICMAI and ICSI sites and on your university's admission page before you pay.
