MBA in Finance vs Marketing vs HR: Which Pays More?
Choosing a specialization is one of the biggest decisions in an MBA. Finance, Marketing and HR are the three most popular choices, and salary is usually the first thing students ask about. Here is how they compare in 2026.

Which Pays More?
Finance generally pays the most. It has the widest range and the highest ceiling, especially in investment banking, private equity and corporate finance roles at top colleges. However, front-end investment banking and PE roles go to only a small share of graduates. At mid-tier colleges, most finance graduates start in banking, insurance and corporate roles at about ₹7-10 LPA.
Marketing is close behind and varies the most. Pay depends on the company and role. Brand management at top FMCG firms and growth or performance marketing roles pay well, while sales-linked roles start lower. Marketing graduates with analytics skills out-earn peers without them.
HR usually pays the least at the start. At most colleges, the HR floor is ₹5-10 LPA. Premium HR outcomes are concentrated at institutes such as XLRI and TISS. HR roles involving people analytics are an exception and pay better.

What Matters More Than Specialization
Your specialization sets a range, but these factors decide where you land in it:
College tier. A top-tier HR graduate can out-earn a Finance graduate from an average college.
Role within the specialization. An investment banking role and a retail banking role pay very differently, even in Finance.
Your rank in the batch.
Analytics skills. Data skills raise pay in all three fields.
Internships and certifications.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Finance if you are comfortable with numbers and want the highest earning ceiling.
Choose Marketing if you like understanding customers and want a mix of creativity and analytics.
Choose HR if you enjoy working with people and want stable, steady career growth. Aim for a strong HR school for the best outcomes.
Salary should not be the only factor. Pick the field where you will perform best, since performance drives long-term pay.
