The best B.Tech colleges under 3 lakhs in 2026 are almost always government or state-university campuses, not private brands advertising a low first-year fee. Under Rs 3 lakh here means total tuition for the four-year B.Tech, not the amount you pay each year. Hostel, mess, exam and laptop costs sit on top of that. If a private college says affordable, ask whether they mean Rs 3 lakh for the whole degree or Rs 3 lakh every year.

What low-fee engineering colleges actually charge
Government B.Tech tuition in many states is still Rs 20,000 to Rs 80,000 a year for state-quota seats. Over four years that stays under Rs 3 lakh. Self-financing, management and NRI seats at the same campus can jump several times higher. Always ask which quota the counsellor is quoting.
Add living costs. A year of hostel and mess in a smaller city can be Rs 50,000 to Rs 1.2 lakh. That does not make the college expensive in tuition terms, but it does change what your family needs in hand. Scholarships and state fee-reimbursement schemes can bring the cash outlay down further for eligible students.

Exam, enrolment and development fees: small, but they add up across eight semesters.
Hostel and mess: often larger than tuition at government colleges.

Government Engineering College, Raipur
GEC Raipur is a public institute (2006) affiliated to CSVTU and approved by AICTE. Branches include Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, Computer Science, and Electronics and Telecommunication. Lateral entry is available for diploma and B.Sc. students. Government Engineering College, Jagdalpur
GEC Jagdalpur (1983) sits in Bastar, Chhattisgarh, on a 69-acre campus with hostels. It is AICTE approved and CSVTU affiliated. COEP (1854) is one of India's oldest engineering schools and is now a technological university. NIRF rank 90, NAAC A++. Branches include Mechanical, Civil, Computer, IT, Electrical, E&TC, Metallurgy, Instrumentation and Manufacturing. Placements are stronger than most colleges in the under-3-lakh conversation. Eligibility and entrance exams for affordable B.Tech seats
Eligibility is 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Admission to these colleges is almost never walk-in. You need JEE Main (the national engineering exam) and/or the state test: MHT CET in Maharashtra, CEE or related rounds for CUSAT, CG PET in Chhattisgarh. Cut-offs for Computer Science are higher than for Civil or Mechanical at the same campus.

Paying less does not freeze the usual branch trade-off. CSE and related fields such as IT, AI and Data Science still have a wider off-campus job market. A government CSE seat under Rs 3 lakh total tuition is a different financial outcome from a private CSE seat at Rs 12 lakh, even if both campuses have similar average packages on paper. That is the whole point of this search.

What is median CTC (cost to company: the middle student's package), not the highest?

Are private colleges ever under Rs 3 lakh for four years?
Rarely, unless a scholarship covers most of the fee. Some private universities list a low per-semester figure that excludes extras. Add four years before you compare them with GEC Raipur or CUSAT.
Is a government college with a lower package still worth it?
Often yes, if the alternative is a large education loan. A modest average package on a Rs 2 lakh degree can beat a slightly higher package on a Rs 16 lakh degree. Do the simple subtraction with your parents. Do not only look at the highest package poster.
Can working people do a low-fee B.Tech?
