A mechanical engineer salary in India depends first on who hires you. A Junior Engineer (Mechanical) recruited by SSC for central government starts at Pay Level 6, with a basic pay of ₹35,400 a month. NTPC hires mechanical graduates through GATE at a basic of ₹40,000 in its ₹40,000-1,40,000 scale. Private pay varies widely with skills, industry and city.
If you are still choosing the degree, our B.Tech Mechanical Engineering course page covers eligibility, fees and colleges. This post is about the job side: what the main government and PSU routes pay as notified, what official college data shows about campus placements, and what moves your pay in a private job.
Mechanical engineer salary in government and PSU jobs
Government and public sector pay is the only part of the mechanical engineer salary picture that is published officially, so start here. These are three common entry points for mechanical graduates and diploma holders.
| Job | How you get in | Pay as notified |
|---|---|---|
| Junior Engineer (Mechanical) or JE (Electrical and Mechanical), central government | SSC Junior Engineer Examination 2026; degree, or diploma (some posts need two years' experience with a diploma) | Group B, Pay Level 6: ₹35,400-1,12,400 a month (basic) |
| Engineering Executive Trainee (Mechanical), NTPC | GATE score in Mechanical; full-time B.E./B.Tech with at least 65% (55% for SC/ST/PwBD); upper age 27 | E1 grade: ₹40,000-1,40,000, joining at a basic of ₹40,000, with DA and other allowances on top |
| Mechanical engineering services through UPSC ESE | Engineering Services Examination 2027; preliminary exam on 31 January 2027 | Group A and Group B posts; pay depends on the service you are allotted |
The SSC figures come from the Junior Engineer Examination 2026 notice, which lists JE (Mechanical) posts in the Central Water Commission and DGQA-Naval, and JE (Electrical and Mechanical) posts in the Border Roads Organisation and Military Engineer Services. The NTPC figures come from its advertisement for Engineering Executive Trainees 2025 through GATE-2025, which had 210 mechanical vacancies, on the NTPC careers site.
Basic pay is not take-home pay
A pay level or scale tells you the basic pay. Your monthly salary also includes Dearness Allowance and other allowances such as house rent, which depend on the rules of the employer and the city you are posted in, and then tax and other deductions come off. The upper end of a range (₹1,12,400 at Level 6, ₹1,40,000 in NTPC's E1 scale) shows how far basic pay can grow in that grade over years of service, not what you get on day one.
Read the conditions too. NTPC's advertisement asks General, EWS and OBC candidates to sign a service bond of ₹5 lakh (₹2.5 lakh for SC, ST and PwBD candidates) to serve at least three years after the one-year training. It also says new engineers can be posted anywhere in the country and will work in shifts, including night shifts, at power plants. For many people that is a fair trade for job security. For some it is not, and it is better to know before you apply.
What official college data shows about campus placement pay
No government survey publishes a national salary figure for mechanical engineers in private jobs. The closest official numbers are what colleges report to NIRF, the Ministry of Education's ranking: how many B.E./B.Tech graduates were placed and their median salary. Here is what four colleges at different points of the NIRF 2025 Engineering ranking reported.
| College (NIRF 2025 Engineering rank) | Graduated in minimum time | Placed | Median salary per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| NIT Tiruchirappalli (9) | 1,029 | 791 | ₹14.35 lakh |
| Jadavpur University (18) | 868 | 790 | ₹10.5 lakh |
| Delhi Technological University (30) | 2,412 | 1,759 | ₹13.25 lakh |
| Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore (100) | 1,084 | 991 | ₹7 lakh |
Three cautions before you read too much into this. First, these medians combine every branch, and NIRF does not split them by branch, so ask the placement cell of any college you are considering for the mechanical branch figure. Second, "placed" leaves out students who went for higher studies or did not sit for placements. Third, a median means about half the placed students earned less than this figure.
Every ranked college has to publish this NIRF data on its own website. Our guide to the top universities in India by NIRF explains how to find and read that file.
What decides a mechanical engineer's pay in a private job
Private employers do not publish pay scales, so instead of guessing a mechanical engineer salary figure, look at the factors that move it.
Industry. Automotive and EV, aerospace and defence, oil and gas, power, HVAC, heavy engineering and engineering services all pay differently for the same degree.
Role. Design and simulation, production and manufacturing, quality, maintenance, project and site work, and sales or application engineering sit on different pay ladders.
Tools you can actually use. CAD software, simulation, GD&T, PLC and automation, and basic coding for manufacturing data. Proof of work, such as a project or internship, counts more than a list of course certificates.
Location. Plants are often outside big cities. A metro office role and a plant role at the same company can pay differently.
Entry route and qualifications. Your college, GATE score and an M.Tech change which employers will interview you in the first place.
Experience. Pay moves as you go from trainee to an engineer who owns a production line, a product or a project.
How to raise your mechanical engineer salary
Take GATE seriously. It decides PSU entry such as NTPC's trainee scheme. NTPC has already announced that its 2027 trainee intake will use only GATE-2027 scores, so a score from an earlier year will not count.
Look at ESE if you want a Group A service. The Engineering Services Examination 2027 notice, released on 16 September 2026, expects about 480 vacancies across civil, mechanical, electrical and electronics. Applications for that cycle closed on 6 October 2026 and the preliminary exam is on 31 January 2027, so if you missed it, plan for the next notice.
Go deeper with an M.Tech if you want design, simulation or R&D roles. See our M.Tech Mechanical Engineering page.
Diploma holders have two routes. You can sit the SSC JE exam with a diploma for many posts, or upgrade to a degree through B.Tech lateral entry after a diploma, which opens GATE-based PSU jobs that ask for a B.E./B.Tech.
Switch industries deliberately. If your current industry pays poorly, moving to a better-paying one where the same skills are used can lift your mechanical engineer salary faster than staying put.
Already working with a diploma and cannot leave your job? Read our page on B.Tech for working professionals first, because the approval rules matter more than the brochure.
Frequently asked questions
What is the starting salary of a mechanical engineer in a government job?
A Junior Engineer (Mechanical) recruited through the SSC JE exam is placed in Pay Level 6, which starts at a basic pay of ₹35,400 a month. Allowances are paid on top of the basic as per central government rules.
What is the NTPC Engineering Executive Trainee salary?
NTPC's EET advertisement places selected candidates in the E1 grade, ₹40,000-1,40,000, at a basic pay of ₹40,000, with Dearness Allowance, perks and allowances as per company rules. Selection is based on the GATE score of that recruitment year.
Can a diploma holder become a Junior Engineer in mechanical?
Yes. The SSC Junior Engineer Examination 2026 accepts a diploma in mechanical engineering for several posts. Some posts, such as JE (Electrical and Mechanical) in BRO and MES, ask for two years' experience if you hold a diploma rather than a degree.
Is mechanical engineering a good career for salary?
It can be, but the spread is wide. Government and PSU jobs give a clear, published pay structure and security. Private pay depends heavily on your industry, role and skills, so plan for GATE, internships and tools like CAD and simulation from the second year. Our B.Tech Mechanical Engineering page lists colleges and fees if you are still choosing.
What is the age limit for NTPC EET?
For EET-2025, the upper age limit was 27 years on the last date of application, with relaxation for SC, ST, OBC, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates as per government rules. Check the advertisement for your year, as conditions can change.
