B Tech fees in India for the 2026-27 intake range from about ₹1.25 lakh a year in tuition at an NIT to ₹5.83 lakh a year at BITS Pilani. IIT Bhubaneswar charges ₹2 lakh a year in tuition, and a state university such as COEP Tech about ₹1.26 lakh. Family income and category can cut government college tuition to zero.
At all four institutes below, the fee is the same for every branch. So once you have a branch in mind, for example on our B.Tech Computer Science or B.Tech Mechanical Engineering course pages, use this post to work out what the degree will actually cost at each type of college. Every figure here comes from the institute's own fee notice for students admitted in 2026-27.
B Tech fees at IITs, NITs, state and private universities
| Institute (type) | Tuition, general category | What the notice shows | Tuition waivers |
|---|---|---|---|
| IIT Bhubaneswar (Indian Institute of Technology) | ₹1,00,000 per semester | First semester institute fee ₹1,32,898, plus ₹27,500 hostel mess advance | Full waiver for SC/ST/PwD; full remission if family income is below ₹1 lakh, two-thirds if ₹1-5 lakh |
| NIT Rourkela (National Institute of Technology) | ₹62,500 per semester | First semester ₹1,36,500 including hostel rent and mess advance; ₹9.2 lakh across all eight semesters | Full exemption for SC/ST/PH or family income below ₹1 lakh; tuition of ₹20,833 per semester if income is ₹1-5 lakh |
| COEP Technological University, Pune (state university) | ₹1,25,830 per year (Open category, CAP round) | ₹1,56,464 payable at admission, including a refundable ₹6,000 deposit; hostel extra | Eligible reserved categories and girls with family income below ₹8 lakh pay less, with tuition reimbursed through the state's MahaDBT portal |
| BITS Pilani (private, deemed university) | ₹2,91,500 per semester, rising about 5% each year | One-time admission fee ₹64,100; hostel ₹36,000 per semester | None listed in the fee schedule |

Reading the table
IIT Bhubaneswar: tuition alone comes to ₹8 lakh over eight semesters at the current rate, before hostel and mess. ₹25,000 of the ₹30,000 JoSAA seat acceptance fee is adjusted against the first semester; the other ₹5,000 is JoSAA's processing charge.
NIT Rourkela: the ₹62,500 semester tuition is the same at NIT Rourkela and NIT Delhi, whose 2026-27 sheet lists the same income slabs. Other charges and hostel costs vary by campus.
COEP Tech: it is a useful benchmark for a strong state university. Its notice says the structure may change in line with State Government guidelines, so check the year you are admitted.
BITS Pilani: BITS publishes tuition for every year of the 2026-27 batch: ₹2,91,500, ₹3,06,000, ₹3,21,500 and ₹3,37,500 per semester. That is about ₹25.1 lakh in tuition for four years, plus the admission fee and hostel.
How much does a B.Tech cost in total?
Tuition is only part of B.Tech fees. To compare colleges fairly, add up the same items for each one for all four years. NIT Rourkela is the clearest example because it publishes every semester for the 2026-27 batch: tuition of ₹5 lakh makes up just over half of the ₹9.2 lakh total, and hostel, mess and other charges make up the rest.
Tuition fee: per semester or per year. Check whether it rises each year, as it does at BITS.
One-time fees: admission, caution money or deposits (often refundable), alumni and convocation fees.
Recurring charges: exam, library, student activity, medical and development fees.
Hostel fee and mess: rent and mess advance per semester. Mess amounts are often approximate and adjusted later.
Your own costs: travel, laptop, books and personal spending, which no fee notice includes.
Ask every college for the full course fees for all four years in writing, not just the first-semester amount on the admission letter. A low first-year figure can hide a steep rise later, and a higher sticker price can come down sharply once a waiver applies.
Fee waivers that can cut B.Tech fees to near zero
The IIT and NIT notices we checked link tuition to category and family income. At IIT Bhubaneswar, SC, ST and PwD students pay no tuition, students with family income below ₹1 lakh get full remission and those between ₹1 lakh and ₹5 lakh get two-thirds remission. The institute's 2026-27 notice asks students to apply through its portal with an income certificate from an authority not below the rank of Tahsildar. NIT Rourkela applies the same income slabs.
At COEP Tech, waivers come through the state's scholarship and freeship schemes rather than a lower bill. COEP Tech's notice says reserved-category students must apply on MahaDBT within the deadline, and those who do not apply pay the full Open-category fee. That one form can be worth more than a lakh a year, so do not leave it to the last week.
If keeping the total under a fixed budget is the goal, see our shortlist of B.Tech colleges under 3 lakhs, or look at the COEP Tech institute page for courses and admission routes.
Is a costlier B.Tech worth it?
Compare the four-year cost with what graduates of that college actually earn. Every NIRF-ranked college, including the top engineering colleges, publishes placement numbers and the median salary of its graduates in its NIRF data, and we show what those figures look like in our guide to mechanical engineer salary in India. A higher fee does not by itself mean a higher salary, so compare each college's own median salary with its four-year cost before you decide how much of a loan is sensible.
Diploma holders can save roughly a year of fees by joining in the second year through B.Tech lateral entry, since you study for three years instead of four.
Frequently asked questions
What is the B.Tech fee at an IIT?
At IIT Bhubaneswar, tuition for the 2026-27 batch is ₹1 lakh per semester, and the first-semester institute fee is ₹1,32,898 plus a ₹27,500 mess advance. SC, ST and PwD students pay no tuition, and family income below ₹5 lakh qualifies for full or two-thirds remission. Each IIT publishes its own notice, so check it on the official website of the IIT you are joining.
What is the NIT B.Tech fee per year?
Tuition is ₹62,500 per semester, or ₹1.25 lakh a year, at NIT Rourkela and NIT Delhi for 2026-27. With hostel and mess, NIT Rourkela's first semester comes to ₹1,36,500 and later semesters to about ₹1,11,500.
Do SC and ST students pay B.Tech fees at IITs and NITs?
They do not pay tuition at IIT Bhubaneswar or NIT Rourkela under the 2026-27 notices, but they still pay other institute charges, hostel and mess. At IIT Bhubaneswar, the SC/ST/PwD first-semester institute fee is ₹32,898.
Are private university B.Tech fees higher than IIT fees?
Often, yes. BITS Pilani's tuition for 2026-27 is ₹2,91,500 per semester, almost three times IIT Bhubaneswar's ₹1 lakh, and it rises every year. Fees at private engineering colleges vary a lot, so compare the four-year total and the placement records before you decide.
