The BA full form is Bachelor of Arts. It is an undergraduate degree in the humanities, social sciences and languages, and it is normally a three-year programme after Class 12, with a four-year Honours or Research route in colleges that follow UGC's newer structure. You choose subjects such as history, political science, economics, English or psychology, and the degree stays open to many careers and to postgraduate study.
If you already know you want to study BA by distance or online, start with our distance BA course page or the online Bachelor of Arts page. This guide explains what the degree is, how long it takes, who can join and what you actually study, using UGC's framework and IGNOU's own programme pages, both read in October 2026.

What does BA mean in practice?
A Bachelor of Arts is the broad-based degree of the university system. Where a BSc concentrates on laboratory sciences and a B.Com on accounts, commerce and finance, a BA lets you study people, societies, texts and ideas. You read and write a lot, you learn to build an argument from evidence, and you pick up research habits that carry into civil services preparation, teaching, media, public policy and many corporate roles.
Colleges offer it in two shapes. A BA (General or Programme) mixes three subjects over the years. A BA (Honours) goes deeper into one main subject. If you are comparing paths after school, our guide on what to do after 12th arts sets BA beside law, design, hotel management and other options.
BA course duration and credit structure
UGC's draft Curricular Framework and Credit System for the four-year undergraduate programme, built on NEP 2020, describes undergraduate degrees of either three or four years with multiple entry and exit points. It is a draft document, so confirm which version your university follows before you plan around the four-year route.
| If you stop after | You receive | Credits in the draft |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year (2 semesters) | Undergraduate certificate | 40-44 credits, plus a 10-credit skills course including a 6-credit internship |
| 2 years (4 semesters) | Undergraduate diploma | 80-88 credits, plus a 10-credit skills course |
| 3 years (6 semesters) | Bachelor's degree | 120-132 credits |
| 4 years (8 semesters) | Bachelor's degree with Honours or Research | 160-176 credits |
Two details are worth knowing. The draft says a student who finishes the 3-year degree with a minimum CGPA of 7.5 can continue to the fourth year for the research degree, and a 4-year degree opens a 1-year master's, while a 3-year degree leads to a 2-year master's. If your goal is a master's or a PhD, ask each college which of the two routes it runs. Convert your semester grades to marks with our CGPA to percentage tool when a form asks for a percentage.
BA eligibility and admission
IGNOU's programme pages for the Bachelor of Arts ask for 10+2 or its equivalent and name no stream, so a Class 12 pass is the formal requirement there. Other universities set their own rules, and many central and state universities admit to BA through merit or an entrance test such as CUET. Always read the admission notice of the specific college, because cut-offs and subject combinations change each year. You can check your Class 12 aggregate with our marks percentage calculator.
If you plan to study through an open or online university, you also need an Academic Bank of Credits ID and a DEB ID before enrolling. Our guides on the ABC ID and the UGC validity of online degrees explain both.
BA subjects: what you can study
The subject list depends on the university. IGNOU's multidisciplinary BA gives a clear example, because it publishes the full menu. Learners choose any three of 14 disciplines.
| Group | Disciplines |
|---|---|
| Social sciences | Anthropology, Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology, Education |
| Humanities | History, Philosophy |
| Languages and literature | English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu |
| Quantitative | Mathematics |
The programme needs 120 credits across six semesters, and one credit equals 30 hours of study time. Learners who choose Psychology pay an extra Rs 600 a year for the practicum, according to the same page. IGNOU's semester one list includes courses such as Calculus, Introduction to Sociology and History of India from the Earliest Times up to c. 300 CE, which shows how different the disciplines feel from day one.
BA by IGNOU: duration and fee
IGNOU runs two BA programmes in open and distance mode. The Bachelor of Arts (BAG) page lists English as the medium and the multidisciplinary BA page lists English and Hindi. Both show a minimum of 36 months, a maximum of 72 months and a fee of Rs 5,000 for the full programme for Indian learners. Examination fees are not included in that figure and are decided by the university. Fees can change each admission cycle, so confirm the current amount on the IGNOU BA programme page before paying.
The low fee and the six-year ceiling suit a learner who works, runs a household or wants a degree at a measured pace. The trade-off is that you manage your own study schedule, since open-learning programmes lean on self-study material. Our IGNOU institute page lists its programmes, and the UGC-DEB approved list lets you check any other university before you enrol.
What can you do after a BA?
IGNOU's own prospects note for the BA says graduates can go on to a postgraduate degree or professional courses, sit competitive exams such as UPSC Civil Services, State PCS, SSC or banking exams, and find roles in customer service and sales, retail, banking, hospitality, media, publishing and digital marketing. No degree guarantees a job, so build skills beside it: writing, data handling, a language or a software tool, and an internship in your final year.
Postgraduate study: MA in your main subject, an MBA, a master's in journalism, public policy or social work, or law through an LLB after graduation.
Law route: if you already lean towards law, compare the five-year route in our BA LLB subjects guide with a normal BA followed by LLB.
Science still appeals: a BA is not a science degree, so look at our BSc courses list before you commit if lab work interests you.
Who should choose a BA, and who should look elsewhere
Choose it if you enjoy reading, writing and discussion, want to prepare for civil services or teaching, or want a flexible degree you can later point towards an MA, MBA or law.
Choose the distance or online route if you work, live far from a campus or need the fee to stay low, and you can study without fixed classes.
Look elsewhere if you want a direct technical profession such as engineering, medicine or pharmacy, where the entry degree itself is specified by a regulator.
