What to do after 12th arts depends on the job you want at 25, not the stream you finished at 17. A BA is the default, but arts students can also go into law, journalism, psychology, teaching, design, hotel management and business degrees, and every one of them leads to the same graduate degree that government exams ask for. Last updated: October 2026.
What are your real options after 12th arts?
Most students narrow their choices to six routes. Each has a different entry test, a different pace and a different kind of first job.
BA (general or honours) in a subject you studied, such as history, political science, sociology, economics, psychology or English. Admission to central universities usually runs through CUET UG.
Law through a five-year integrated course, mostly via CLAT for the National Law Universities.
Journalism and mass communication: BJMC or a BA in journalism, which suits you if you like writing, video or research.
Teaching through a four-year integrated teacher education programme, or a BA followed by a B.Ed.
Business degrees such as BBA, which many colleges open to students from any stream.
Creative and service courses: design, hotel management, social work, film and media studies.
If you are still unsure between a plain BA and something more specialised, look at the Online BA and BA Psychology pages to see what the syllabus actually covers before you decide.
Which entrance exams matter for arts students?
Two exams cover most of the ground. CUET UG is the common test for many central and participating universities. NTA's CUET UG 2026 syllabus page lists 23 domain subjects, and the humanities ones include History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Geography and Mass Media, plus a General Aptitude Test and language papers. You pick the papers that your target course and university ask for, so read each university's eligibility page before you choose subjects.
CLAT is the entry route for law at the National Law Universities. For CLAT 2027 (UG), the Consortium of NLUs says there is no upper age limit and asks for 10+2 with at least 45 percent marks, or 40 percent for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Students appearing in the March or April 2027 board exams can apply, but must show proof of passing at the time of admission. Arts is not a requirement, and the Consortium does not restrict it by stream.
Teaching has its own route. NCTE's page on NCET 2026 shows that admission to the four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) for the 2026-27 session went through NCET. Read the current NCET bulletin for subject rules before planning around it.
What to do after 12th arts for a government job or UPSC
You do not need an arts degree for UPSC, and you do not need to be an arts student to benefit from one. UPSC's Civil Services Examination notice for 2026 (Notice No. 05/2026-CSE, dated 4 February 2026) says a candidate must hold a graduate degree from a university recognised under the rules it lists, or an equivalent qualification. It does not name a subject. Final-year students can sit the written exams but must produce proof of passing before the interview.
The practical reading is simple: pick a degree you can finish well, with marks and subjects you can defend, and treat exam preparation as something you build alongside it. History, political science, geography and economics overlap with the civil services syllabus, which helps, but it does not guarantee anything. If a degree has to be done while preparing, a UGC-DEB entitled programme can fit, and our post on whether an online degree is valid in India explains how to check this. Read the UGC-DEB approval check before paying any fee.
Can arts students do BBA, BCA or B.Com?
Often yes for BBA, with caveats. Many BBA programmes ask only for 10+2 in any stream, but each college sets its own rule and some ask for maths, so confirm it on the admission page. BCA and B.Com differ more: some BCA colleges ask for maths in Class 12 and some do not, and B.Com programmes usually prefer commerce but vary. If business interests you, compare BBA with our BBA versus B.Com guide, and see what the commerce stream gets in our post on what to do after 12th commerce.
Regular, distance or online: which mode suits an arts student?
A regular BA gives you campus time, peers and internships. An online or distance BA gives you flexibility and usually lower fees, which matters if you want to work, prepare for an exam or support your family while studying. The catch is discipline, since no one checks your attendance. Whatever you choose, make sure the university is entitled by UGC-DEB for that programme, and ask how exams and study material work. Our explainer on distance versus online education sets out the difference.
Who should choose what?
Choose law if you enjoy reading, argument and long-form writing, and can prepare for CLAT in Class 12.
Choose journalism or mass communication if you want a portfolio-based career and will build one through internships. See the BJMC course page.
Choose psychology if you want to study behaviour and are willing to go on to a master's degree for most professional roles.
Choose a plain BA if you are aiming at civil services, teaching or a master's in a subject, and you want the lowest-cost route.
Choose BBA if you want a business career and are comfortable with some maths and presentations.
Choose design, hotel management or social work if the work itself attracts you, and check each college's own entrance rules.
Pick two options, read the syllabus of each, and check the entrance exam dates and eligibility on the official pages before the application window opens. Fees and exam dates change every year, so confirm current figures on the university or exam body's website.
Frequently asked questions
What to do after 12th arts for a government job?
Complete a graduate degree in any subject you can do well, then prepare for the exam you want, such as UPSC, state public service exams or SSC. UPSC's 2026 notice asks for a graduate degree and names no stream.
What to do after 12th arts for law?
Prepare for CLAT UG, which for 2027 asks for 10+2 with 45 percent marks (40 percent for SC, ST and PwD). Several other law entrance tests exist for private law colleges, so check each college's page.
Can I do BBA after 12th arts?
Many colleges admit students from any stream, but rules vary by college. Check the eligibility on the admission page and confirm whether maths is needed.
Is an arts degree enough for a good career?
