The BSc MLT full form is Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology. It is a degree for people who run the tests behind a diagnosis: blood counts, culture reports, blood grouping and tissue slides. You join after Class 12 Science with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and you finish with a year of hospital or laboratory internship.
Colleges now advertise this degree under two names, so read the title carefully. Our BSc MLT course page covers admission and colleges, and this guide explains the name, the rules and the subjects behind it.

What the BSc MLT full form means in practice
Medical laboratory technology is the science of testing body fluids and tissues. The Gazette copy of the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) Act, 2021 lists medical laboratory science professionals as a recognised category: cytotechnologist, forensic science technologist, histotechnologist, hemato technologist and medical lab technologist. You can check the list in the Schedule of the NCAHP Act, 2021.
The newer curriculum under that Act calls the degree BMLS, not BSc MLT. They are close relatives, but not automatically the same programme, so compare duration, internship and the award name before you apply. Some colleges also use the name BMLT, and our BMLT course page lists those programmes.
BSc MLT eligibility and admission
The NCAHP-based regulation published by Sri Guru Ram Das University of Health Sciences, Amritsar for the 2025-26 session asks for a pass in 10+2 from a recognised board or NIOS with at least 50% marks in aggregate of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Admission in that regulation runs on the NEET score and a merit list of 10+2 marks. The candidate must be 17 years old on 31 December of the admission year and furnish a physical fitness certificate.
Read this as one university's rule, not a national law. Your target college may use a state counselling process or its own entrance test instead, so open its current prospectus before you plan around NEET. A second university's copy of the same NCAHP curriculum repeats the 4-year, 50% and age rules, which suggests the framework is shared. Use our marks percentage calculator to check your PCB aggregate.
BSc MLT subjects semester by semester
The curriculum gives 20 credits to each of the first six semesters, then one full year of internship. Theory and practical papers run side by side from the first semester.
| Semester | Main papers |
|---|---|
| 1 | Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Fundamentals of the Healthcare System and Medical Laboratory Science, Communication and Professionalism, Basic Emergency Care and First Aid, Basics of Computer Application, plus anatomy and physiology practicals |
| 2 | Fundamentals of Microbiology, Basics of Biochemistry, Fundamentals of Haematology, Preventive and Social Medicine, plus three practicals |
| 3 | Bacteriology, Intermediary Metabolism and Endocrinology, Clinical Haematology, Basics of Pharmacology, plus three practicals |
| 4 | Virology and Immunology, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Clinical Pathology, Medical Laboratory Management and Quality Control, plus three practicals |
| 5 | Mycology and Parasitology, Analytical Biochemistry, Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine, Medical Law and Ethics, plus three practicals |
| 6 | Applied Pathobiology, Cytology and Histopathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Biostatistics and Research Methodology, plus practicals |
| 7 and 8 | Internship: clinical laboratory posting or research dissertation, 40 credits |
The internship is not a formality. The regulation puts it at 12 months, or 1,800 hours, carrying 40 credits, and it must be completed to earn the degree. To reach it, a student needs to finish all coursework credits by the end of the third year. Ask every college which hospital laboratories take its interns and how placements are assigned.
If you like the molecular and research side more than routine diagnostics, compare this list with the BSc biotechnology subjects in our other guide. The two degrees overlap in microbiology and biochemistry but lead to different jobs.
Jobs after BSc MLT
The regulation lists the roles graduates can move into: medical laboratory technologist, clinical research assistant, clinical lab manager, quality control officer and molecular lab technologist. Employers named are hospitals, diagnostic labs, blood banks, pharmaceutical companies, public health organisations and research institutions. For higher study it names the Master of Medical Laboratory Science, M.Sc in Microbiology, Biochemistry or Biotechnology, and an MBA in hospital or healthcare management.
There is no official national salary figure for this degree, and any single number you see online is an average of someone's sample. Ask each employer for the pay band in writing, and use our in-hand salary calculator to turn a CTC offer into monthly take-home.
BSc MLT course fees and online study
Fees depend on the college, and government seats cost far less than private ones, so quote totals for all four years, not the first semester alone. If you plan to borrow, run the full amount through the education loan EMI calculator first.
A fully online BSc MLT does not fit the curriculum. The internship alone is 1,800 hours of clinical posting, and every core subject has a practical paper. Treat any programme that promises the degree entirely online with caution and ask for its regulator approval in writing.
Who should choose BSc MLT
Choose it if you like precise, repeatable work, are comfortable handling blood and body fluid samples and prefer the laboratory to the ward.
Look elsewhere if you want direct patient care, where nursing is the closer fit, or if you want pure research, where a biotechnology or microbiology degree gives more room.
Check before applying whether the college awards BSc MLT or BMLS, how long its internship runs and how it is arranged.
