The BSc courses list after 12th falls into five families: pure sciences, computing, life sciences, agriculture and allied subjects, and allied health. PCM students fit most pure science and computing courses. PCB students fit life sciences and allied health. A few streams, like agriculture and allied health, are professional degrees with their own regulators and cannot be studied online or by distance.
Last updated: October 2026. Eligibility examples come from Delhi University's 2026-27 admission bulletin; mode rules come from the UGC Open and Distance Learning and Online Programmes Regulations 2020 and UGC's undergraduate credit framework.
BSc courses list by stream
Pure and physical sciences
B.Sc Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Electronics and Geology. These usually need Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) in Class 12, and they lead naturally to an M.Sc, research, teaching, or analytical jobs in industry.
Computing and data
B.Sc Computer Science, B.Sc Information Technology, B.Sc Data Science, Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security. Maths in Class 12 is usually required. If you like coding, also compare these with a BCA; our guide to BCA course details explains how the two differ in subjects and eligibility.
Life sciences
B.Sc Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry and B.Sc (Programme) Life Science. These usually need Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB).
Agriculture and applied sciences
B.Sc Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry, plus applied courses such as Home Science, Food Technology, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Forensic Science. Agriculture is a professional degree shaped by ICAR: its Sixth Deans' Committee report sets B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture as a four-year programme with no exit after three years, and makes its recommendations mandatory for ICAR accreditation.
Allied and healthcare sciences
B.Sc Medical Laboratory Technology, Radiology and Medical Imaging, Operation Theatre Technology, Cardiac Care Technology, Physician Assistant, Optometry and similar programmes. These professions are regulated under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act, 2021. B.Sc Nursing is a separate professional degree with its own regulator and admission rules.
BSc eligibility: PCM, PCB and the exceptions
Subject rules matter more than percentages for B.Sc admission. Delhi University's CUET requirements for 2026-27 are a useful guide because many universities follow similar logic:
B.Sc (Hons) Physics, Chemistry and Electronics: Physics + Chemistry + Mathematics or Applied Mathematics
B.Sc (Hons) Computer Science and Mathematics: Mathematics or Applied Mathematics plus any two other subjects, so Physics and Chemistry are not compulsory
B.Sc (Hons) Zoology, Microbiology and B.Sc (Programme) Life Science: Physics + Chemistry + Biology or a related subject
This answers a common question: a PCB student who also took maths can apply for B.Sc Computer Science at DU, while a PCB student without maths cannot. CUET candidates must take the test in subjects they studied in Class 12. Full combinations are in DU's UG bulletin of information.
Best BSc courses: how to choose
Strong in maths and want industry jobs soon: computing courses such as Computer Science, IT or Data Science.
Love a subject and want an M.Sc, research or teaching: the pure science or life science degree in that subject.
Interested in farming, food or rural development and government agriculture roles: B.Sc Agriculture or Horticulture.
Want to work in hospitals and diagnostics without a medical degree: an allied health B.Sc at a recognised institution.
Need to work while studying: one of the B.Sc options allowed in online or distance mode, covered below.
Use this BSc courses list as a starting point: the best course is the one where your Class 12 subjects, your interest and a clear next step line up. If you took PCM and are weighing up engineering as well, our guide on what to do after 12th PCM covers the wider options.
3-year BSc or 4-year BSc Honours?
Under UGC's Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes, three years and 120 credits give a B.Sc degree, while four years and 160 credits give a B.Sc (Honours). Students who score 75% or more in the first six semesters can take Honours with Research, which includes a 12-credit research project. The framework's own example is a B.Sc in Life Sciences after three years and a B.Sc (Honours) in Life Sciences after four. Agriculture is the main exception, since ICAR keeps it at four years with no three-year exit.
Which BSc courses can you study online or by distance?
This is the part most course lists skip. The UGC Open and Distance Learning and Online Programmes Regulations 2020 set three rules:
Some fields are barred from both distance and online mode, including agriculture, horticulture, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy and other para-medical disciplines, and hotel management.
Online mode does not allow programmes with lab or practical work, except where the practical part is limited to programming and coding. That makes computing and data courses the main online B.Sc options.
Distance mode allows lab-based science programmes only at open universities or highly rated institutions (NAAC 3.26 or above, or NIRF top 100 at least twice in three cycles), run from headquarters or from study centres with long regular-mode experience.
In practice, IGNOU runs several B.Sc programmes by distance, with lab courses built in; its B.Sc (General) was listed at Rs 6,500 a year on its site in 2026. You can compare other distance B.Sc options and recognised online B.Sc programmes. Either way, check that the university and programme appear on the UGC-DEB list for your admission session before paying, and treat any online B.Sc in agriculture, nursing or allied health as a red flag.
Frequently asked questions
Which BSc course is best after 12th?
There is no single best course. Computer Science, IT and Data Science suit PCM students aiming for tech jobs; pure and life sciences suit those planning an M.Sc or research; agriculture and allied health suit students who want those specific professions.
Can PCB students do BSc Computer Science?
Only if they studied maths in Class 12 at most universities. At DU, B.Sc (Hons) Computer Science needs Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, but not Physics or Chemistry.
Can I do BSc Agriculture or BSc Nursing online?
No. UGC's 2020 regulations bar agriculture, nursing and para-medical programmes from both online and distance mode.
Is BSc a 3-year or 4-year course?
The B.Sc degree takes three years. Under the NEP framework a fourth year leads to B.Sc (Honours), and B.Sc Agriculture is a four-year degree.
