The short answer
There is no single formula. Evaluators such as WES read Indian marks by class, not by proportion: 70% and above (First Class with Distinction) is an A, 4.0; 50 to 69% is a B, 3.0; 35 to 49% is a C, 2.0. Dividing a 10-point CGPA by 10 and multiplying by 4 is plain arithmetic, not an official conversion.
How to use it
- 1
Choose whether you have a CGPA or a percentage, and enter it.
- 2
For a CGPA, pick your board or university so its official rule gives the percentage first.
- 3
Read the 4.0 figure under WES’s grade bands, and compare it with the simple ratio.
Why there are two answers
Indian universities grade by class (distinction, first, second, pass). Credential evaluators such as WES map those classes to US letter grades, so everything from 70% up becomes an A. A straight ratio (CGPA ÷ 10 × 4) treats an 8.2 as 82% of a 4.0, which is 3.28; no evaluator uses that, but students often see it quoted.
For a CGPA, the calculator first turns it into a percentage with your university’s own published rule, the same rules our CGPA to percentage tool uses, then reads the WES band. WES itself converts every course on your transcript, so an official WES evaluation can land a little differently. And unless a university asks for a converted GPA, report your grades as your marksheet shows them.

Questions students ask
How do I convert CGPA to GPA on a 4.0 scale?
Convert your CGPA to a percentage with your university’s rule, then place it in WES’s bands for India: 70% and above is A (4.0), 50 to 69% is B (3.0), 35 to 49% is C (2.0). The simple ratio CGPA ÷ 10 × 4 gives a different number and is not what evaluators use.
What is 8 CGPA in GPA?
Under a ×10 university rule, 8 CGPA is 80%, which falls in WES’s First Class with Distinction band: A, 4.0. The simple ratio gives 3.2. If your university uses another rule, pick it in the calculator.
Should I convert my GPA myself on applications?
Only if the form asks for it. Stanford’s graduate admissions office, for example, tells applicants not to convert a GPA reported on a different scale. Report your grades as your marksheet shows them unless the university asks for a converted figure or a WES evaluation.
Is the WES GPA the same as this result?
Not exactly. WES converts each course from your transcript and calculates the GPA from those, so your official WES GPA can differ from a single-number estimate. Use this to see roughly where you stand.
