MBA courses in India fall into a handful of formats: the two-year full-time MBA, the two-year PGDM, shorter or part-time executive programmes for people with work experience, four-year integrated degrees after Class 12, and online or distance MBAs. Any graduate can usually apply, but the entrance exam, the approval body and the cost differ a lot between them. This guide sorts them out so you can pick by your situation.
Most students start by asking which specialisation to take. Start one step earlier and decide which format fits your life, because the format decides the exam you write, the time you give up and the approval you should check. The sections below follow that order, using AICTE's Approval Process Handbook 2024-27 and the exam bodies' own pages as references.
Types of MBA courses at a glance
| Format | Duration | Who it suits | Admission route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-time MBA or MMS | 2 years | Graduates who can study full time | Entrance exam plus group discussion and interview at most colleges |
| PGDM | 2 years | Same as MBA, at autonomous AICTE-approved institutes | Score in CAT, XAT, CMAT, ATMA, MAT or GMAT, or a state or central entrance |
| PGDM for working professionals | 18 months | People with at least 3 years of managerial or supervisory experience | Same national tests, with experience counted by the institute |
| PGCM | 1 year | Graduates who want a short management certificate | Set by the institute within AICTE norms |
| Integrated MBA | 4 years | Class 12 students sure about management | Set by the university or institute |
| Online MBA | Usually 2 years | Working professionals who need flexibility | Set by the university |
| Distance MBA | Usually 2 years | Self-study learners on a tight budget | Set by the university |
The AICTE handbook sets the two-year duration for MBA, MMS and PGDM courses. It also sets a one-year Post Graduate Certificate in Management (PGCM), and lists a four-year integrated degree in management that leads to an MBA. Students who hold a BE, B.Tech or a four-year BBA or BMS can be admitted directly to the second year of an MBA through lateral entry.
Full-time MBA vs PGDM: what is the real difference?
An MBA is a degree awarded by a university or a college affiliated to one. A PGDM is a diploma awarded by an autonomous institute, but the AICTE norms treat the two-year programmes in the same way for duration and entry through the same national tests. Employers read both as a management postgraduate qualification, so the brand of the institute and what you learn there matter more than the label.
The difference shows up in the paperwork and the curriculum. A PGDM institute designs its own curriculum within AICTE's model, while a university MBA follows the university's syllabus. If you plan a PhD later, check that the qualification is accepted by the university you apply to. For the detail, read our post on MBA vs PGDM before you shortlist colleges.
MBA eligibility: who can apply
For an MBA or MMS under AICTE norms you need a bachelor's degree of at least three years in any discipline, with at least 50% marks, or 45% for candidates in the reserved category. A commerce, arts, science or engineering graduate can all qualify. Final-year students can usually sit the entrance exam, and the degree result must be ready before admission.
Many colleges add their own cut-offs, a minimum score or a work-experience preference, so the AICTE figure is the floor, not the whole rule. For a full walk-through of duration, subjects and the admission steps, our post on the MBA full form and eligibility covers the basics in one place.
MBA entrance exams: CAT, XAT, CMAT and MAT
AICTE's handbook says admission to PGDM courses is made from candidates who qualified in one of six all-India tests, CAT, XAT, CMAT, ATMA, MAT or GMAT, or in common entrance exams run by state governments or the Centre through CUET. The admission window runs from 1 March to 30 June each year. Here is what the main tests look like:
| Exam | Conducted by | Format | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| CAT | Indian Institutes of Management | Computer-based test | Used for the IIMs and many other top B-schools; read the current notification for dates |
| XAT | XLRI Jamshedpur | Four sections: verbal ability and logical reasoning, decision making, quantitative aptitude and data interpretation, general knowledge | XAT 2027 is listed for 3 January 2027; the general knowledge section does not count towards the percentile; more than 250 B-schools accept the score |
| CMAT | National Testing Agency | Three-hour computer-based test covering quantitative technique and data interpretation, logical reasoning, language comprehension, general awareness, and innovation and entrepreneurship | Open to any graduate or final-year student who is an Indian citizen, with no age limit; accepted by AICTE-approved institutions |
| MAT | All India Management Association | 150 questions in five sections of 30, over 120 minutes, with a negative mark of 0.25 per wrong answer | Held four times a year in February, May, September and December; the score is valid for one year and the best score counts |
A practical way to choose: if you are aiming for an IIM, CAT is the one that matters. If you want a wide set of good colleges and a gentler path, add CMAT and MAT, because MAT is held four times a year and lets you try again within months. Check the dates on xatonline.in and the NTA and AIMA sites before you register, since cycles change every year.
Executive MBA in India: for people with work experience
Executive MBA is the name many institutes use for a programme built around working professionals. Some run it as a full-time 12 to 18 month course, others as weekend or online classes. The AICTE handbook does not use the executive label, but it does set a norm for experienced candidates: an 18-month PGDM for people with at least three years of relevant managerial or supervisory experience.
Look at the fine print before you choose. Ask whether the programme is a degree or a diploma, which approval body covers it, how many hours of live teaching it has and how many years of experience the batch usually carries. A batch of experienced peers is often worth more than the course content, so ask for the average experience of the last batch.
Online MBA and distance MBA: are they the same?
No. Online programmes run on a learning platform with recorded or live classes, while distance programmes rely mainly on self-study material and scheduled exams. Both are regulated by UGC through its Distance Education Bureau, which publishes the regulations and the lists of institutions recognised or entitled to offer these programmes. You cannot enrol in either without a DEB ID.
Before you pay any fee, check that your university appears in the lists on deb.ugc.ac.in and read our guide to checking UGC-DEB approval. For the full comparison, see online MBA vs distance MBA, and the online MBA course page lists programmes you can compare. If you do not want to write CAT, our post on online MBA without CAT explains the route.
MBA specializations: how to choose one
A specialisation is the stream you study in the later part of the course, and sometimes from the first term. The common ones are finance, marketing, human resources, operations and supply chain, business analytics, healthcare and hospital management, and entrepreneurship. Many colleges let you choose in the second year, but check this in each prospectus.
| Specialisation | Work it leads to | Suits you if |
|---|---|---|
| Finance | Corporate finance, banking, investment and risk roles | You like numbers and can work with models and reports |
| Marketing | Brand, sales, digital and product roles | You enjoy customers, campaigns and market data |
| Human resources | Hiring, training, pay and employee relations | You are good at listening and handling people issues |
| Operations and supply chain | Production, logistics and process improvement | You like fixing how work gets done |
| Business analytics | Data-led decision roles in most industries | You are comfortable with statistics and tools |
| Healthcare management | Hospital and health-service administration | You want to work in the health sector without a clinical role |
| Entrepreneurship | Starting or scaling a business | You have an idea or a family business to build on |
Pick the stream you can still enjoy after two hard years. Salary comparisons shift every year and differ by college and city, so treat a ranking as a starting point, not a promise. How much do MBA courses cost?
Fees vary widely by format and institute, and each college sets and revises its own, so quote only a current figure from its admission page. Our MBA fee comparison puts the routes side by side, and the IGNOU MBA fees post shows one public-university route in detail.
Which MBA course should you choose?
Fresh graduate, can study full time: a two-year MBA or PGDM through CAT, XAT, CMAT or MAT, with the college's approval checked first.
Working with 3 or more years of experience: an executive route such as an 18-month PGDM, or an online MBA if you cannot leave your job.
Tight budget and self-disciplined: a distance or online MBA from a university that appears on the UGC-DEB lists.
Class 12 student sure about management: a four-year integrated management degree, or a BBA first and an MBA later. Our post on MCA vs MBA helps if you are torn between computing and management.
Whatever you choose, shortlist three colleges, read each admission notice line by line and ask for the full fee schedule in writing. The right course is the one you can finish well, not the one with the loudest brochure.
