Overview
A two-year MBA that teaches you to clean, analyse and present business data. Compare eligibility, official 2026 fees, subjects and careers, and see how it differs from business analytics and data science.
An MBA in data analytics is a two-year Master of Business Administration where the first year covers core management and the second year teaches you to collect, clean, analyse and present data so that managers can act on it. You learn statistics, spreadsheets, databases, visualisation tools such as Excel and Tableau, and enough programming to handle real datasets. Many universities offer a closely related track as an MBA in business analytics, so this page compares both and shows what each one actually teaches.
The goal is not to turn you into a software engineer. It is to make you the person in a marketing, finance, operations or HR team who can turn numbers into a clear recommendation. That is the main difference from a technical master's degree in data science.
These three labels overlap, and universities use them loosely, so read the subject list rather than the title. As a rough guide, a data analytics MBA leans towards handling and analysing data with tools. An MBA in business analytics puts more weight on using models to make business decisions; we cover it separately on our MBA in Business Analytics page. An MBA in data science adds machine learning and programming depth, and our MBA in AI and Data Science page explains that route.
If you are a commerce or arts graduate, a data analytics or business analytics track is usually the easier entry. If you already code, a data science track will use those skills more.
Whatever the label, most analytics MBAs move through the same layers: descriptive analytics (what happened), predictive analytics (what is likely to happen, such as next quarter's demand or which customers may leave) and, at some universities, big data analytics on very large datasets. How deep each layer goes depends on the electives, which is why the subject list matters more than the name.
You need a bachelor's degree, usually with 50% marks, and most programmes accept any discipline. Campus MBAs admit through entrance tests. The CAT 2026 eligibility notice asks for at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (45% for SC, ST and PwBD candidates), and the exam is on 29 November 2026. Pondicherry University's two-year MBA in Data Analytics, run by its Department of Management Studies, admits through CUET PG scores, has 50 sanctioned seats and asks for a bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 50% marks.
Online programmes admit on graduation marks alone. NMIMS CDOE asks for 50% at graduation (45% for SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates), Manipal University Jaipur asks for 50% (45% for reserved categories) and JAIN Online asks for a 50% aggregate. None of them requires a maths degree, though you will find the course easier if you are comfortable with numbers.
The degree takes two years over four semesters in every mode. Campus programmes add internships or industry projects. Online programmes are taught through a learning platform, so you can keep working while you study.
For online study, check the UGC-DEB programme list for your admission year before you pay. The 2026-27 list shows the MBA in online mode for NMIMS, Manipal University Jaipur, JAIN and Amity University. Under Regulation 22 of the UGC's 2020 regulations for open, distance and online programmes, an online MBA from a recognised university is equivalent to a campus MBA. IGNOU's current programme list does not include an MBA in data analytics.
Most online universities price their analytics specialisation the same as, or slightly above, their general MBA. The table lists fees each university publishes on its own website for its analytics or data science track.

Campus fees at universities and B-schools vary far more, so take the figure from each institution's own fee notice for your admission year. Offers and scholarships change every cycle.
Year one covers accounting, economics, statistics, marketing, finance, HR and research methods. The analytics papers come in year two. Manipal University Jaipur's Analytics and Data Science track includes Programming in Data Science, Exploratory Data Analysis, Introduction to Machine Learning, Visualization, Advanced Machine Learning, Unstructured Data Analysis, Business Analytics and Data Scraping. Amity's Data Science track covers Data Engineering, Data Visualization and EDA, Introduction to Data Science, Analytics for Decision Making, Supervised and Unsupervised Machine Learning and Advance Deep Learning. NMIMS's Business Analytics electives include Data Analytics for Business, Machine Learning for Managers, Visual Analytics, Operational and Supply Chain Analytics and Consumer Data Analytics.
NMIMS CDOE publishes the full structure of its online MBA (Business Analytics), which shows how a business analytics programme mixes core management with analytics electives. Each subject carries 4 credits and the project carries 6.
| Semester | Subjects |
|---|---|
| Semester 1 | Business Communication, Financial Accounting, Marketing Management, Micro Economics and Macro Economics, Organisational Behaviour, Quantitative Methods I |
| Semester 2 | Business Analytics, Cost and Management Accounting, Legal Aspect of Business, Strategic Management, Human Resource Management, Operations Management |
| Semester 3 | Corporate Finance, Research Methodology and four electives |
| Semester 4 | Corporate Sustainability, Indian Ethos and Ethics, International Business, a project and three electives |
| Electives | Data Analytics for Business, Machine Learning for Managers, Business Process Modelling and Management, Visual Analytics, Operational and Supply Chain Analytics, Digital Leadership in the Age of Industry 5.0, Consumer Data Analytics |
The programme runs for two years with four years of validity and asks for 50% at graduation (45% for SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates), according to the NMIMS CDOE programme page. Notice that only the electives are analytics-specific; the rest is a general MBA. That is typical, so count the analytics papers before you compare fees.
Look for a programme where you work on real datasets and finish with a project, not one that only teaches the theory of analytics.
Typical roles are data analyst, business analyst, business intelligence analyst, marketing or sales analyst, financial analyst, supply chain analyst and analytics manager. With extra programming and statistics, some graduates move into data science roles. Banks, consulting firms, e-commerce, IT services and analytics companies hire for these roles, because more of their decisions are now data driven.
Salary depends on the school, your technical skills and any experience before the MBA. One official figure: IIM Lucknow's Final Placement Report 2025-26 shows a mean CTC of ₹33.2 lakh a year and a highest of ₹80 lakh for its combined Product, Tech and Analytics domain. That is a top-campus figure across several role types, not a typical analytics salary. For any college you shortlist, ask for the audited placement report and the median for analytics roles. Our list of the highest-paying MBA specialisations shows where analytics sits against other tracks.
An MBA in data analytics suits you if you enjoy finding patterns, like using Excel and are willing to learn SQL and Python. It also suits working professionals in sales, finance, operations or IT who already handle reports and want to move into an analyst or analytics manager role while keeping their job.
Look elsewhere if you dislike numbers or detailed work, because analytics is a daily routine of checking data. If you want to build software or work on the technology side rather than the business side, the MBA in IT Management may fit better.

FAQs
Quick answers to common questions.
An MBA in Data Analytics is a postgraduate management degree focused on using data to support business decisions. It combines management subjects with statistics, analytical tools and practical applications. Universities set the precise curriculum, project requirements and teaching schedule.
Applicants usually need a recognised bachelor's degree. Minimum marks, accepted disciplines and category relaxations differ between universities. Some programmes specify quantitative or technical backgrounds, so check the current prospectus rather than assuming every graduate qualifies.
Possible roles include data analyst, business intelligence analyst and analytics consultant, depending on skills and employer requirements. More technical data scientist roles may require deeper mathematics, programming and modelling experience. A project portfolio can demonstrate how you apply analytical methods to business problems.
The school, your technical skills and your experience before the MBA matter most. At the top end, IIM Lucknow's Final Placement Report 2025-26 shows a mean CTC of ₹33.2 lakh a year for its Product, Tech and Analytics domain, which mixes several role types. For any programme you shortlist, ask for the audited placement report and check whether figures are averages or medians and how many students they cover.
As of October 2026, published online fees are ₹1,84,000 for Manipal University Jaipur's MBA in Analytics and Data Science, ₹1,96,000 for JAIN Online's MBA in Business Intelligence and Analytics and for NMIMS CDOE's MBA in Business Analytics (paid in full), and ₹2,25,000 for Amity University Online's MBA in Data Science. Add registration and exam fees, and confirm the current fee sheet before paying.
The required test and selection stages depend on the university. Check the current admission notice for accepted examinations, score validity, interviews and deadlines. A management entrance test accepted for another MBA does not automatically qualify you for this particular programme.
Further research may be possible if you meet the doctoral programme's admission rules. Check its required postgraduate qualification, minimum marks, entrance assessment and proposed research area. Completing an MBA does not guarantee admission to every management or technical research programme.
Many MBA Data Analytics programmes last two years. Pondicherry University, for example, describes its programme as a two-year regular MBA. Confirm the chosen university's academic calendar, semester structure and project requirements, as the official regulations determine the duration.
They overlap but are not the same. A data analytics MBA focuses on handling, analysing and presenting data with tools. A business analytics MBA puts more weight on using models for business decisions. A data science MBA adds deeper machine learning and programming. Universities use these names loosely, so compare the subject list of each programme rather than the title.
Yes, online. The UGC-DEB list for 2026-27 shows online MBAs at NMIMS, Manipal University Jaipur, JAIN and Amity University, and each offers an analytics or data science specialisation. Under UGC Regulation 22 of 2020, these degrees are equivalent to campus MBAs. IGNOU's current programme list does not include a data analytics MBA. Check that your university and programme are on the list for your admission year.
Start with the exact degree title and current prospectus. Compare analytical laboratories, faculty expertise, project support, fees and programme-specific placement evidence. Pondicherry University lists a regular MBA Data Analytics programme; assess each college's actual provision rather than relying on a general ranking claim.
The syllabus commonly combines management foundations, quantitative methods, analytical tools and applications in business functions. Look for statistics, visualisation, business intelligence and practical projects. The semester outline on this page is indicative; the university's latest curriculum determines compulsory subjects, electives and assessment.
It is worth it if you want a business role where you use data every day, such as business analyst, BI analyst or analytics manager, and you are willing to build real skills in Excel, SQL and a visualisation tool. The degree alone will not get you hired. A portfolio of projects on real datasets, plus the school's placement record, decides most of the return.
It is harder than most MBA specialisations if you have not studied maths or used spreadsheets for a while. Expect statistics, data cleaning, visualisation and some programming or machine learning basics in the second year. Commerce and arts graduates manage well if they practise regularly, and revising basic statistics before the programme starts helps a lot.
No. As of October 2026, IGNOU's MBA programme list covers specialisations such as marketing, finance, HR, operations, logistics, banking, agribusiness, construction and health care management, but not data analytics. For an analytics specialisation in online mode, look at universities on the UGC-DEB list such as NMIMS, Manipal University Jaipur, JAIN and Amity University.
Yes. Online MBAs from UGC-DEB listed universities let you study while you keep your job, and admission is usually on graduation marks of 50% rather than an entrance test. It works best if your current role already involves reports or numbers, because you can apply what you learn at work and build projects that count when you look for an analyst or analytics manager role.
