The MBA full form is Master of Business Administration. It is a postgraduate management degree that usually takes two years after a bachelor's degree, and it prepares you for manager-track roles in marketing, finance, HR, operations, analytics and general management. In Hindi it is written as मास्टर ऑफ बिज़नेस एडमिनिस्ट्रेशन.
That one line is the easy part. Most students searching this term actually want to know who can do an MBA, how long it takes, which exam to write and whether a distance or online route is worth it. This guide answers each of those, using IGNOU's published MBA handbook and the National Testing Agency's CMAT page as the official reference points.
MBA full form and meaning
MBA stands for Master of Business Administration. Business administration here means the day-to-day and long-term running of an organisation: how money is raised and accounted for, how products are priced and sold, how people are hired and managed, and how operations are kept efficient. The degree teaches these as separate functions, then asks you to pick one as your specialisation.
It is a degree, not a diploma. That matters because a diploma such as PGDM, which stands for Post Graduate Diploma in Management, is awarded by autonomous institutes approved by AICTE, while an MBA degree is awarded by a university. For hiring, the two are treated as close equivalents in most private-sector roles, and the difference is explained in detail in our post on MBA vs PGDM.

Who is eligible for an MBA?
The general rule is a bachelor's degree in any stream. You do not need a commerce or management background, so BA, BSc, BCom, BBA, BCA and BTech graduates all apply. Where colleges differ is the minimum mark. IGNOU's handbook asks for a bachelor's degree of at least three years with 50% marks for the general category and 45% for reserved categories, and many universities follow a similar band.
Final-year students can usually apply for entrance exams and admission rounds, with the offer confirmed once the degree result arrives. Check each college's own notice for this, because it varies. If you are a working professional, work experience is not required for most Indian MBA programmes, but it helps in interviews at top full-time schools.
MBA duration: how many years does it take?
A regular full-time MBA runs for two years, divided into four semesters. Some colleges add a summer internship between the first and second year. Distance and online programmes follow the same two-year minimum, but give working students extra time to finish. IGNOU, for example, allows up to four years to complete the programme.
If you are comparing a one-year MBA, treat it with care. A one-year programme is usually a post-graduate diploma or an executive programme, not the standard two-year MBA degree, so confirm what the final certificate says before you pay.
MBA syllabus and subjects
The first year is common to everyone. You study management principles, accounting, economics, business statistics, marketing, finance, operations and organisational behaviour. In the second year you choose a specialisation and add electives, a project and often an internship.
IGNOU's structure shows how this looks on paper. The programme has 28 courses worth 116 credits: 20 core courses of 4 credits each, one 8-credit project, and 7 specialisation courses of 4 credits each. Students pick one of five areas: Human Resource Management, Financial Management, Operations Management, Marketing Management or Services Management. Other universities offer a longer elective list, including analytics and international business.
Popular MBA specialisations
Choose the specialisation from the work you want to do, not from last year's salary headlines. The main ones are short to describe:
Marketing: brand, sales, digital marketing and market research roles. Suits people who like customers and persuasion.
Finance: corporate finance, banking, investment and financial analysis. Suits people comfortable with numbers and accounting, and works well after BCom.
HR: talent acquisition, learning, compensation and employee relations. Suits people who enjoy working with people and policy.
Operations and supply chain: production, logistics and process improvement. See our guide to MBA in logistics and supply chain.
Business analytics: using data to guide decisions. Suits BTech, BCA and BSc graduates.
Healthcare and hospital management: running hospitals and health services, covered in our healthcare MBA guide.

Entrance exams for MBA admission
Most full-time colleges select students through a national or institute-level exam, followed by a group discussion or interview. You do not need to write all of them. Pick two or three that match the colleges you are targeting.
| Exam | Conducted by | Accepted by |
|---|---|---|
| CAT | Indian Institutes of Management | IIMs and many other business schools |
| XAT | XLRI Jamshedpur | XLRI and a range of private business schools |
| CMAT | National Testing Agency | AICTE-approved institutions, university departments and affiliated colleges |
| SNAP | Symbiosis International University | Symbiosis institutes |
| NMAT | GMAC | NMIMS and associated schools |
| MAT | All India Management Association | Many colleges across India |
On CMAT, the NTA's own page describes it as a national-level entrance examination for management programmes, held as a computer-based test with sections on quantitative technique and data interpretation, logical reasoning, language comprehension, general awareness, and innovation and entrepreneurship. Our guide to MBA entrance exams in India goes through the other exams, and the MBA admission process explains the steps after the result.
Read the official CMAT page at cmat.nta.nic.in for the notice of each cycle, because dates and registration windows change every year.
Can you do an MBA without an entrance exam?
Yes. IGNOU's handbook states that candidates can enrol without appearing for any entrance test if they meet the eligibility criteria, and its admissions are made on merit. Many online MBA programmes also admit on graduation marks, with no CAT or CMAT score. Our posts on online MBA admission without entrance exam and online MBA without CAT list how that works.
Full-time, distance and online MBA: which route fits you?
| Route | How you study | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Full-time MBA or PGDM | Daily classes on campus for two years, with placements | Freshers who can give two years and want campus recruitment |
| Part-time or executive MBA | Evening or weekend classes | Working professionals in a big city near the campus |
| Distance MBA | Study material, assignments and scheduled exams, often with study centres | Learners who want low fees and flexible self-study, such as IGNOU students |
| Online MBA | Live or recorded classes on a learning platform | Working professionals who need flexible time and some teaching support |
IGNOU's fee shows the cost end of the range. Its handbook lists Rs 15,500 per semester for the first, second and fourth semesters and Rs 17,500 for the third, which comes to Rs 64,000 in tuition before registration and development fees. That is the figure on the handbook as of October 2026, so confirm the current amount on IGNOU's admission portal. A detailed break-up is in our post on IGNOU MBA fees.
The difference between the last two routes is spelled out in online MBA vs distance MBA. Before you enrol in any online or distance programme, note that learners cannot enrol without a DEB ID, which in turn needs an ABC ID. Our guides explain how to create your DEB ID and check whether an online university is UGC-DEB approved. If you are leaning towards a working-professional route, see the online MBA course page.
Is an MBA worth it?
It is worth it when the degree opens a door you cannot open otherwise: a move from technical to managerial work, a career switch, a promotion that requires a postgraduate qualification, or access to campus recruitment at a good school. It is a weaker choice when you have no clear role in mind and are using it to delay a decision, because the fees and two years are real costs. For a closer look, read MBA after graduation: is it worth it.
A practical way to decide: write down the job you want in three years, then look up five people in that job and check whether they hold an MBA. If most do, the degree is a sensible investment. If they do not, a certification or work experience may serve you better.
How to choose your MBA step by step
Decide your goal: a campus placement, a promotion at your current employer, or a career switch.
Pick the route that fits your time and budget: full-time, part-time, distance or online.
Shortlist two or three entrance exams, or skip them if you choose a merit-based programme.
Check that the college or university is approved by AICTE or UGC, and for online and distance programmes, that it is entitled by UGC-DEB.
Compare total fees for the full programme, not just the first semester, and read the university's own fee page.
Apply early, keep your graduation marksheet and ID ready, and note every deadline.
