B Com Honours (Bachelor of Commerce Honours) is a commerce degree that goes deeper into accounting, finance, tax and business law than a general B.Com. Under the NEP framework, 'Honours' now formally means a four-year, 160-credit degree, though many universities also award the B.Com (Hons) title after three years. You need Class 12, and many universities ask for maths or accountancy.
Last updated: October 2026. Subject lists and eligibility below come from Delhi University's official syllabus and admission bulletin, UGC's credit framework, IGNOU's prospectus and ICAI's rules.
What is B.Com and what does Honours add?
B.Com is the Bachelor of Commerce, the standard undergraduate degree for accounting, finance and business. The Honours version focuses more tightly on commerce subjects. Delhi University, for example, classes B.Com (Hons) as a single-core programme built around commerce, and lists B.Com (Programme) separately.
The NEP changed what 'Honours' means. Under UGC's Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes:
3 years and 120 credits: B.Com degree in the major subject
4 years and 160 credits: B.Com (Honours)
4 years with 75% or more in the first six semesters: B.Com (Honours with Research), including a 12-credit research project
Early exits: a certificate after one year or a diploma after two
IGNOU's newer B.Com, for instance, runs for three or four years, with the honours degree awarded at the four-year exit. When you compare colleges, ask whether their B.Com Honours is the older three-year version or the four-year NEP version.
B Com Honours subjects, semester by semester
Delhi University's current B.Com (Hons) syllabus under its UGCF 2022 framework is a useful reference, because many universities follow a similar structure. Its core papers, each worth 4 credits, are:
Semester 1: Management Principles and Applications, Business Laws, Financial Accounting
Semester 2: Corporate Accounting, Company Law, Human Resource Management
Semester 3: Business Mathematics, Financial Management, Principles of Marketing
Semester 4: Business Statistics, Cost Accounting, International Business
Semester 5: Income Tax Law and Practice, Business Economics, Management Accounting
Semester 6: Business Analytics, Corporate Governance, Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Customs Law
Semesters 7 and 8 (fourth year): papers such as Banking and Insurance or Financial Technology and Analytics, plus a research or entrepreneurship track
Electives and general papers sit on top of this core. The full lists are on DU's commerce syllabus page. Other universities follow a similar pattern with their own paper names.
B.Com Honours vs B.Com: what actually differs
Less than most people think, at least at DU. Comparing DU's B.Com (Hons) syllabus with its B.Com (Programme) exam schedules, the core papers in semesters 2, 5 and 6 are the same. They differ in three places:
Semester 1: Management Principles and Applications (Hons) vs Business Organisation and Management (Programme)
Semester 3: Business Mathematics (Hons) vs Business Statistics (Programme)
Semester 4: Business Statistics (Hons) vs Entrepreneurship and New Venture Planning (Programme)
The bigger difference is admission. B.Com (Hons) at DU needs maths or accountancy in your CUET subjects; B.Com (Programme) does not. In short: choose Honours if you are comfortable with numbers and plan a career in accounting, finance or CA. A regular B.Com is fine if you want a commerce degree with more flexibility, or if you lack the subject combination for Honours.
B.Com Honours eligibility
Delhi University (2026-27): CUET with one language plus Mathematics or Applied Mathematics plus two other subjects, or one language plus Accountancy or Book Keeping plus two other subjects.
St. Xavier's College, Kolkata (2025-26): Mathematics, Business Mathematics, Statistics or Applied Mathematics is compulsory in Class 12, with at least 45% in four subjects including English.
IGNOU: 10+2 or its equivalent, with no subject condition.
Can you do B.Com Honours without maths?
Often, yes. DU accepts Accountancy in place of maths for B.Com (Hons), and IGNOU has no subject condition. Some colleges, like St. Xavier's Kolkata, do insist on maths. Expect some maths inside the course anyway: Business Mathematics and Business Statistics are core papers.
Online and distance B.Com Honours
An online or distance B.Com is valid when the university is recognised by UGC for that mode and session. The UGC Open and Distance Learning and Online Programmes Regulations 2020 treat these degrees as equivalent to campus degrees. As a fee anchor, IGNOU's distance B.Com costs Rs 5,000 a year according to its July 2026 prospectus. Our online B.Com Honours page lists recognised online programmes, and the online B.Com page covers the general version. Our B.Com Honours course page covers campus options.
Careers and next steps after B.Com Honours
The degree fits accounting, audit, tax, banking and financial analysis roles. Typical first jobs are accounts executive, audit assistant at a CA firm, tax assistant, banking operations and junior financial analyst. An internship at a CA firm or in a company's finance team during college makes a visible difference to your first offer. The degree also shortens the path to professional qualifications. ICAI's current scheme lets commerce graduates with at least 55% marks register directly for CA Intermediate, skipping the Foundation level, as its official FAQ on the new scheme explains. Other common routes are CMA, CS, M.Com and the MBA. Our guide on what to do after B.Com compares them.

Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of B.Com Hons?
B.Com Hons stands for Bachelor of Commerce (Honours). Under the NEP, the honours title is formally linked to a four-year, 160-credit programme.
Is B.Com Honours 3 years or 4 years?
Both versions exist. Many universities still run a three-year B.Com (Hons), while NEP-aligned universities award the honours degree after four years and 160 credits, with an option to exit at three years with a B.Com.
Which is better, B.Com or B.Com Honours?
B.Com Honours is better if you want accounting, finance or CA and are comfortable with maths or accountancy. A regular B.Com gives similar core knowledge with easier admission rules and more room for other subjects.

Yes. Under ICAI's current scheme, commerce graduates with at least 55% marks can register directly for CA Intermediate.
