An online BCom course is a commerce degree taught on a learning platform, open to anyone who has passed Class 12 in any stream. It is valid when the university is recognised or entitled by UGC-DEB for online programmes and you enrol with a DEB ID. IGNOU lists its online B.Com at ₹5,000 a year; private universities charge far more.
Fees and rules below were read on the official pages of UGC-DEB, IGNOU and Jain Online in October 2026.
Who can join an online BCom course?
The entry rule is simple: a pass in Class 12 or an equivalent exam. IGNOU's online B.Com page lists "10+2 in any discipline", so a student from arts or science can enrol, not only commerce students. Maths is not a condition at IGNOU. Some private universities may add their own conditions, so read the eligibility line on the programme page before you apply.
Many people who start work right after school come back for a degree to meet promotion criteria, apply for higher studies or change jobs, and an online programme lets them study around a job. If you already hold a degree, look at what to do after BCom instead.
Is an online BCom degree valid?
Yes, under one condition: the university must be recognised or entitled by UGC-DEB for online mode in the year you take admission. Regulation 22 of the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020 says degrees awarded through online mode by recognised institutions are treated as equivalent to the same degrees through the conventional mode.
Two practical rules came later. UGC's public notice of 11 November 2024 says students must create a DEB ID, using their ABC ID, to enrol in any ODL or online programme from the October 2024 session onwards. The same notice lists programmes that cannot be offered online at all. Engineering, medicine, nursing, law and architecture are among them. B.Com is not on that list.
Check the university yourself on the UGC-DEB website, which carries the entitled list for online programmes, and follow the steps in our guide on how to check if an online university is UGC-DEB approved. If you have not made your ID yet, start with the DEB ID guide. For the wider legal picture, read is an online degree valid in India.
How much does an online BCom cost?
Fees differ by a very wide margin, so compare the full programme cost and not the per-semester figure shown in an advert. These are the two figures we could read on the universities' own pages in October 2026:
IGNOU, online B.Com (BCOMFOL): ₹5,000 per year, with exam fees not included in the fee structure. The programme page lists a minimum duration of 48 months and a maximum of 96 months.
Jain Online, B.Com: the programme page lists elective-wise fees, ₹1,20,000 for Accounting and Finance and ₹2,28,000 for International Finance and Accounting (the ACCA-accredited elective), with a three-year duration. The page also mentions a 15% discount for one-time payment and EMI options.
Fees change every intake. Confirm the current figure, the exam fee and any registration or development charge on the university's admission page before you pay anything.
Cost is the first filter for most families, but it is not the only one. A degree costing a few thousand rupees a year asks you to study mostly alone. A degree costing a lakh or more usually buys live classes, a learning platform and faculty access. Decide which of those you will actually use.
How online BCom classes and exams work
The UGC regulations require every institution to follow UGC's guidelines for proctored examinations. They also say a learner in online mode needs at least 75 per cent participation in the programme's activities before the end-semester exam. Attendance in live sessions or platform activity therefore counts, even though nobody checks you at a gate.
Most online BCom programmes follow a common pattern: a business core in year 1, then a chosen area such as accounting and finance in year 2. Jain Online's page describes exactly that structure, with live plus recorded classes. IGNOU's route leans on study material and scheduled exams. Ask each university how its exams are held, because the Jain page we read does not say.

IGNOU online BCom vs a private university online BCom
IGNOU is a central university, so you pay a fraction of what private universities charge. See IGNOU's online B.Com page for the current details. For a private offer, see the Jain Online B.Com page. The list below sets the two side by side.
Fees: IGNOU ₹5,000 per year (exam fees extra); private university electives listed from ₹1,20,000 on Jain's page.
Duration: IGNOU minimum 48 months, maximum 96 months; Jain three years.
Eligibility: IGNOU 10+2 in any discipline; check each private university's own line.
Teaching: IGNOU is built around self-study material; Jain lists live plus recorded classes.
Specialisation: IGNOU's programme is general; Jain offers elective domains from year 2.
Brand and recognition: IGNOU is a central university; Jain Online lists its programme as UGC-entitled.
Who it suits: IGNOU suits a self-driven student on a tight budget; a private programme suits someone who wants structure and live teaching and can afford it.

Who should choose what
Pick IGNOU if money is the main limit, you can plan your own study hours and you are comfortable with a longer, self-paced route. Pick a private online programme if you need fixed classes to stay on track, want an accounting or finance elective from year 2, and can pay the full fee comfortably.
Look at a regular or distance B.Com instead if your goal is a campus placement, or if your target employer or exam asks for a regular degree. Our online B.Com course page shows the university options, and the B.Com distance education page covers the other route.
Five checks before you pay
Confirm the university appears in the UGC-DEB entitled or recognised list for online programmes for the current session.
Create your ABC ID and DEB ID, since admission is not possible without them.
Read the total fee, including exam, registration and any other charge, and ask for it in writing.
Ask how exams are held and where, and what share of your marks comes from assignments.
Check the degree name on the offer. It should read B.Com or B.Com (Hons), not a vague certificate title.
Frequently asked questions
Is an online BCom course valid for government jobs?
UGC treats a degree from a recognised or entitled institution as equal to the conventional one. Each recruiter still sets its own educational qualification rules, so read the notification of the post you want and check the exact wording.
Can I do an online BCom after Class 12 arts or science?
At IGNOU, yes. Its online B.Com page asks for 10+2 in any discipline. Check the eligibility line of any other university before applying.
What is the fee for an online BCom course in India?
It depends on the university. IGNOU lists ₹5,000 per year for its online B.Com, with exam fees separate. Jain Online's page lists elective-wise fees starting at ₹1,20,000. Both figures were read in October 2026 and can change at the next intake.
Do I need a DEB ID for an online BCom?
Yes. UGC's public notice of 11 November 2024 makes a DEB ID, generated with an ABC ID, mandatory for enrolling in ODL and online programmes from the October 2024 session onwards. The ID stays valid for lifelong ODL and online learning.
Is an online BCom the same as a distance B.Com?
No. Online programmes run on a learning platform with live or recorded classes, while distance programmes depend mainly on printed or digital material and scheduled exams. Both are covered by the same UGC regulations.
