Overview
B.Com General is a three-year commerce degree in accounting, business law, tax, economics and management. See eligibility, CUET and merit admission, fees at named colleges and the careers it leads to.
B.Com General is a three-year undergraduate degree in commerce that covers accounting, business law, tax, economics and management without locking you into one specialisation. Of all the B Com courses on offer, it is the broadest, which is why most commerce students start here. You finish with a B.Com degree that employers in accounts, audit, banking and tax recognise, and with the base you need for CA, CMA, CS, M.Com or an MBA.
This page sets out the B Com course details you need before you apply: who can get in, how admission works, what it costs at named colleges as of October 2026, and where the degree leads. If you want the meaning of the degree and a paper-by-paper subject list, our guide to the B Com full form and subjects covers that in detail.
The basic rule is a pass in Class 12 from a recognised board. Beyond that, each university sets its own conditions, and they differ more than most students expect.
At IGNOU, the B.Com (General) programme page states the requirement as 10+2 in any discipline, so arts and science students can join without commerce in school. At the University of Delhi, admission to the B.Com programme for 2026-27 runs through CUET-UG and the Common Seat Allocation System. The DU Bulletin of Information 2026-27 asks for one language from List A plus any three subjects from List B, or one language, one List B subject and the General Aptitude Test. Mathematics is not compulsory for the B.Com programme at DU. It is for B.Com (Hons.), which needs Mathematics or Accountancy among your CUET subjects.
State universities and private colleges mostly admit on Class 12 marks, sometimes with their own test or interview. Some private universities link scholarships to your Class 12 percentage or CUET score, so your board marks can change what you pay.
The standard B Com course runs for three years, or six semesters. Under the UGC four-year undergraduate framework, a three-year degree needs 120 credits and a four-year honours degree needs 160 credits, so some universities now offer a fourth year. A three-year B.Com is enough for most jobs and for CA, CMA, CS and MBA entry. The fourth year makes more sense if you want research or a postgraduate route.
You can study B.Com in three ways. Regular college means daily classes on campus. Distance learning means printed or digital study material, assignments and term-end exams. Online means live or recorded classes on a learning platform. Distance and online degrees are valid only when the university is entitled by UGC-DEB to offer that programme in that mode for your admission session, so check before you pay. Our online B.Com page compares the online route in more detail.
Most universities offer a few types of B.Com courses. They share the same accounting, law and economics base. They differ in depth, or in the extra skill they add.
Fees are the part of the B Com course details that vary most. B.Com is one of the cheapest degrees you can take at a public college, and one of the widest in price at private universities. The figures below come from each institution's own fee page or fee sheet.
| Institution | Type and mode | Published fee | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| IGNOU, B.Com (General) | Central open university, distance | ₹5,000 a year; exam fees extra | BCOMG programme page, ignou.ac.in |
| IGNOU, online B.Com | Central open university, online | ₹5,000 a year; exam fees extra | BCOMFOL programme page, ignou.ac.in |
| Dyal Singh Evening College, University of Delhi | Public, regular | ₹17,950 for the first year (2026-27), including ₹1,500 refundable security | First-year fee structure 2026-27, dsce.du.ac.in |
| KES Shroff College, Mumbai | Aided B.Com, regular | ₹19,140 first-year fee (2026-27) | Fee structure 2026-27, kessc.edu.in |
| Nitte, Bengaluru campus | Deemed university, regular, 4 years | ₹66,000 a year for BCom (Honors) General, including exam fee (2026-27) | UG fee structure 2026-27, nitte.edu.in |
| Graphic Era Hill University, Dehradun | Private university, regular | Tuition of ₹74,900 a semester in year 1, ₹76,600 in year 2 and ₹80,430 in year 3 for all-India seats, before scholarships, plus admission, enrolment and yearly charges | B.Com fee page for intake 2026, gehu.ac.in |
When you compare, add up the full programme cost, not the first-year figure alone. Ask whether exam, development and lab charges are inside or outside the quoted fee, and check refund terms before you pay.
The B Com syllabus follows a similar shape everywhere. The first year teaches financial accounting, business organisation and economics. The second year adds business law, statistics, income tax and marketing. The third year goes deeper into corporate accounting, company law, cost accounting and management accounting. Under the NEP pattern you also take value-added courses and an internship, and a fourth year can add a research project or dissertation. Paper names change from university to university, so read your own university's syllabus. For a full semester-wise list, see our B.Com subjects guide, and if you want a deeper accounting track, compare the B.Com Honours course and its subjects and eligibility.
Career options start with roles such as accounts executive, audit assistant at a CA firm, tax assistant, banking operations and junior financial analyst. Larger employers also hire B.Com graduates into payroll, accounts payable and compliance teams. An internship in a finance team or CA firm during the degree helps your first application more than any single paper.
The degree is also a starting point. Many students register for CA, CMA or CS alongside it, and others move to M.Com or an MBA after two or three years of work. Our guide on what to do after B.Com compares those routes. Starting pay depends on the employer, city and role, and no college can promise you a salary, so judge a college by its published placement data.
B.Com suits you if you are comfortable with numbers, like the idea of accounts, tax or finance work, or plan to take a professional course such as CA. It also suits working adults and career switchers, because the distance and online routes let you earn a degree at a low cost while you keep your job.
Look elsewhere if you want general management, marketing or people roles early on, where a BBA may fit better. Our BBA vs B.Com comparison sets out the trade-offs. If you already know you want deep accounting, B.Com Honours or a specialised track may serve you better than the general degree.
Most B Com course details look alike on paper, so start with your goal: a professional course, a job soon after graduation, or an MBA later. Then pick the mode that fits your time and money. For a regular seat, compare the college's fee sheet, faculty and placement record. For distance or online study, confirm the university's UGC-DEB entitlement for that programme and session. Read the paper list rather than the course title, ask whether the programme is three or four years, and keep a note of every deadline. If you are still unsure, book a free counselling call and we will help you shortlist B Com courses that match your marks and budget.

FAQs
Quick answers to common questions.
B Com General is a Bachelor of Commerce programme with a broad syllabus covering accounting, business law, economics, taxation and management. A three-year route is common. Confirm the current degree structure, subject choices and completion rules with the university before applying.
You normally need to pass 10+2 from a recognised board. Minimum marks and required subjects depend on the university. Admission may use marks, an entrance test or another selection process. Check the current programme notice for the study mode you want.
Typical B Com subjects include financial accounting, business organisation, economics, corporate accounting, business law, cost accounting, company law, income tax, auditing, financial management, marketing and management accounting. Exact B Com general subjects vary by university, and the final year usually adds electives plus a project.
B Com General usually provides a broad commerce foundation, while Honours can involve more detailed study of core subjects. Curriculum, duration and degree structures differ between universities. Compare the actual syllabus and entry requirements rather than relying only on the programme name.
A three-year programme divided into six semesters is a common B Com General route. Universities can have different degree structures and completion rules. Check the minimum duration, maximum completion period and attendance or assessment requirements for the exact programme and mode before enrolling.
Some universities offer B.Com programmes online or through distance learning. Confirm the exact degree title and recognition for the university, programme, mode and admission session. Online class delivery and distance study-centre arrangements differ. Ask how assignments, attendance and examinations work before choosing a provider.
Graduates work as accountants, tax consultants, banking executives, auditors, financial analysts and business executives. Many also add professional courses such as CA, CMA or CS, or an MBA, to move into more senior roles.
Check recognition for the exact university, B.Com programme, mode and admission session using UGC-DEB guidance and the university's official information. A university's recognition in one session or mode does not establish every offering. Employers and further-study programmes can also set their own entry conditions.
Yes. Accounting, taxation, law and finance subjects overlap with professional syllabi, so the degree supports preparation. You still have to register for and clear the CA, CMA or CS exams separately from the degree.
Yes. Common routes are M.Com, MBA, CA, CMA, CS, CFA and other certifications. Each programme has its own entry rules and sometimes an entrance exam, so check eligibility before you plan.
It depends on the university. As of October 2026, IGNOU's online B.Com programme page lists ₹5,000 a year, with exam fees charged separately. Private universities charge much more. Compare the full published fee schedule, including exams and other charges, check whether instalments change the total, and read the refund terms before you pay.
Compare the degree title, B Com subjects, eligibility, teaching mode, exam format and recognition. Check total fees and student support as well. General, Honours and specialised B Com courses can have different curricula, so choose the option that matches your study and career goals.
Public colleges are the cheapest regular option. For 2026-27, Dyal Singh Evening College of the University of Delhi lists ₹17,950 for the first year of B.Com (Prog.), including a ₹1,500 refundable security, and KES Shroff College in Mumbai lists ₹19,140 for first-year aided B.Com. IGNOU's distance B.Com costs ₹5,000 a year plus exam fees.
Not for the general degree at most universities. The DU Bulletin of Information 2026-27 lets you apply for the B.Com programme with one language and any three List B subjects in CUET, so Maths is optional. B.Com (Hons.) at DU is different: you need Mathematics or Accountancy among your CUET subjects.
Take CUET-UG in a combination DU accepts for B.Com, then register on the Common Seat Allocation System at ugadmission.uod.ac.in and fill in your college and programme choices. Seats are allotted in rounds on your CUET score. Check the current Bulletin of Information for subject combinations and dates.
Under the UGC four-year undergraduate framework, a three-year degree needs 120 credits and a four-year honours degree needs 160 credits. The three-year B.Com is enough for most jobs and for CA, CMA, CS and MBA entry. The fourth year makes sense if you want research, a dissertation or a postgraduate route.
Yes, at many universities. IGNOU accepts 10+2 in any discipline for its B.Com (General), and DU's B.Com programme does not require commerce subjects in CUET. Some colleges set subject or mark conditions, so read each admission notice. Expect to spend your first semester catching up on accounts.
