About PhD for Working Professionals

PhD for working professionals: the short answer
Yes, you can do a PhD in India while you keep your job. The UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022 allow a part-time PhD, provided every condition in them is met. Your employer must give a No Objection Certificate. What you cannot do in India is a PhD online or by distance. The same regulations bar every higher education institution from running one that way. So a PhD for working professionals means part-time research under a supervisor at a recognised institution, or an executive doctoral programme.
Eligibility criteria for a part-time PhD
Part-time candidates meet the same eligibility criteria as full-time candidates. Under the 2022 regulations you need one of these:
- A 2-year master's after a 3-year bachelor's, or a 1-year master's after a 4-year bachelor's, with at least 55% marks.
- A 4-year bachelor's with at least 75% marks.
- An M.Phil. with at least 55% marks.
- An equivalent qualification from an accredited foreign institution.
A 5% relaxation applies to SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), differently-abled, EWS and other notified categories. The regulations do not set a minimum number of years of work for a part-time PhD. How admission works
There are two routes. If you qualify for a fellowship or scholarship through UGC-NET, UGC-CSIR NET, GATE, CEED or a similar national test, a university may admit you on an interview. Otherwise you sit the university's own entrance test.
- The test is 50% research methodology and 50% subject.
- You need 50% in it to be called for the interview.
- Final selection weighs the test at 70% and the interview at 30%.
- A 5% relaxation in the test applies to the notified categories.
The No Objection Certificate
The university must get a No Objection Certificate, through you, from the right authority where you work. It has to state three things:
- You are permitted to study part time.
- Your official duties leave you enough time for research.
- If needed, you will be relieved from duty to complete the coursework.
Talk to your HR team early. Many applications stall because this letter arrives late.
Duration, coursework and training

Online doctorates from foreign universities
You will see many adverts for online doctorates from foreign universities. Be careful before you treat one as a PhD in India.
- No Indian institution may run a PhD online or by distance, so there is no Indian online PhD to match it with.
- UGC's regulations on equivalence for foreign qualifications, notified on 4 April 2025, exclude any qualification earned through a franchising arrangement. They also look at whether the entry rules match a similar programme in India.
- UGC's public notice of 12 December 2023 says online degrees sold by EdTech companies with foreign universities have no UGC recognition.

How to plan a PhD while working
- Pick your subject first, then find a supervisor whose research matches it. Subject pages for each specialisation are listed below.
- Check how far the university is from your home and office, since a PhD in India cannot be done online or by distance.
- Ask when coursework classes run and whether your employer will relieve you for them.
- Budget your time honestly. Six years is the normal maximum, and extensions are limited.

Yes. UGC's PhD Regulations 2022 allow a part-time PhD if all their conditions are met, including a No Objection Certificate from your employer. What is not allowed is a PhD through online or distance mode at any Indian institution.
You work with a research supervisor and a Research Advisory Committee, and you complete at least 12 credits of coursework, including research methodology and Research and Publication Ethics. Ask each university about library access, class timings and how often you can meet your supervisor.
It suits professionals who want to research a subject in depth, teach later, or build expert credibility, and who can give several years of steady time. It suits you less if you want a quick title or cannot get your employer's No Objection Certificate.
A PhD in India follows UGC's PhD Regulations 2022: at least 3 and at most 6 years, coursework, a thesis and a viva. Other doctorates, such as a foreign DBA, follow their own university's rules and focus on applied business research. They are not automatically treated as a PhD in India.
The title does not decide how India treats the degree. For jobs, promotions or teaching, what counts is recognition. UGC's 2025 equivalence regulations exclude franchised awards, and UGC says online degrees sold by EdTech companies with foreign universities have no UGC recognition. Check equivalence before you enrol.
