DBA vs PhD comes down to what you need the doctorate to do. A PhD is the research degree Indian universities award under UGC's 2022 regulations, and the route to supervising research at Indian universities. A DBA is a practice-focused doctorate for experienced managers. It is not on UGC's list of specified degrees, so check its standing before you enrol.
This guide sets out what the rules say about each, where executive PhDs fit in between, and who should pick which. For programme options, fees and eligibility, see our Doctor of Business Administration course page.

What UGC's rules say about the PhD
The UGC PhD Regulations 2022, notified in the Gazette on 7 November 2022, set the floor for every Indian PhD. The main points for a working manager are these.
Eligibility: a master's degree with at least 55% marks, or a four-year bachelor's degree with at least 75%, with a 5% relaxation for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), EWS and differently-abled candidates.
Admission: either through NET or a similar national test followed by an interview, or through the university's own entrance test. In the entrance test route, 50% marks gets you an interview, and the final selection weighs the test at 70% and the interview at 30%.
Coursework: at least 12 credits, including research methodology and a research and publication ethics course. You need 55% in coursework to continue.
Duration: at least three years including coursework and at most six, with up to two more years through re-registration. Women scholars and persons with disabilities can get a further two years.
Part-time study: allowed, but your employer must issue a No Objection Certificate confirming you can study part-time, have time for research and will be relieved for coursework if needed.
No distance or online PhD: the regulations bar Indian institutions from running PhD programmes in distance or online mode.
One more rule matters if you see yourself teaching later. Under the same regulations, a faculty member needs a PhD and peer-reviewed publications to be recognised as a research supervisor. If guiding doctoral students at an Indian university is part of your plan, the PhD is the degree the system is built around.
Where the DBA stands in India
UGC decides which degree titles Indian universities may award. Its consolidated Specification of Degrees notification of July 2014 lists the doctoral degrees common to all disciplines as D.Litt., D.Sc., LL.D. and Ph.D. or D.Phil., and its business and management list runs from B.Com and BBA to MBA and MMS. The DBA is not among them. A UGC letter to universities in 2022 added that degrees not named in the notification and its amendments are treated as unrecognised.
In practice, this means a DBA taken by an Indian professional usually comes from a foreign university. Its value then depends on two things: how employers and clients view the awarding university, and whether you need formal equivalence in India. That second question is now handled under the UGC equivalence regulations of 2025, published on 4 April 2025.
| Condition | What it means for a foreign DBA or PhD |
|---|---|
| Home-country recognition | The awarding institution must be recognised under the laws of its own country |
| Programme norms | You must have studied the programme as that institution specifies |
| Similar entry requirements | Entry rules must be similar to a comparable Indian programme; a standing committee compares duration, credits and evaluation, including the thesis |
| No franchise | A qualification obtained through a franchising arrangement is not considered at all |
| Off-shore campuses | Allowed only if the campus is approved in both countries and meets accreditation rules in both |
| Process | Online application on UGC's portal, with fixed working-day timelines and a review option if refused |
None of this says a DBA is a poor choice. It says the burden of checking falls on you. Before you pay, ask the university in writing whether the programme is delivered by the university itself or through a partner that awards it, what the residency and thesis requirements are, and how earlier Indian DBA graduates have used the degree.
The middle path: executive PhDs at IIMs
If you want a research doctorate without leaving your job, several IIMs run executive PhD programmes built for working professionals with long experience. IIM Indore says its Executive Doctoral Programme in Management culminates in a PhD in Management. The IIM Calcutta Executive PhD is a useful benchmark for what these programmes demand.
Experience: at least eight years of full-time managerial, entrepreneurial or professional work after graduation.
Academics: for example, a first-class master's or two-year PG diploma, or a four-year bachelor's with a CGPA of 6.5, plus 50% in Class 10 or 12.
Selection: a research aptitude test and an in-person interview on campus, with an employer NOC at admission.
Load: ideally five years, with two years of coursework mixing offline and online classes and a qualifying CGPA of 6.0, followed by a thesis defence.
It ends in a thesis defence, like a PhD, and carries the IIM name. Compare executive and part-time routes on our executive PhD page and part-time PhD page.
DBA or PhD: which should you choose?
Choose a PhD if you want rigorous research training and plan to teach, publish or supervise research at an Indian university, or may want to later. Part-time study with an NOC makes it possible alongside a job.
Choose an IIM executive PhD if you have eight or more years of work experience at a senior level and want research training with a strong Indian institutional name.
Choose a DBA if your goal is applied research on problems from your own industry rather than new theoretical knowledge, you are not aiming at an Indian academic post, and you have checked the awarding university's recognition, delivery model and equivalence position.
If you already hold an MBA, read our pages on DBA after MBA and PhD after MBA side by side, then shortlist programmes on the DBA course details page once you know which route fits.
Frequently asked questions
Is a DBA equal to a PhD in India?
Not automatically. The PhD is a UGC-specified degree governed by the PhD Regulations 2022. The DBA is not in UGC's 2014 consolidated list of specified degrees, so a foreign DBA's standing in India depends on UGC's 2025 equivalence process.
Can a DBA holder guide PhD students in India?
UGC's PhD Regulations 2022 require a research supervisor to hold a PhD and have peer-reviewed publications. A DBA alone does not meet that rule.
Can I do a PhD while working full time?
Yes, through part-time mode, if your employer gives a No Objection Certificate saying you may study part-time, have time for research and will be released for coursework. IIM executive PhDs are another route for experienced professionals.
Is an online PhD valid in India?
UGC's PhD Regulations 2022 bar Indian higher education institutions from offering PhD programmes in distance or online mode. Part-time PhDs are allowed, but they are not online programmes.
Which is better after an MBA, DBA or PhD?
It depends on your career goals. A PhD suits an academic or research career in India. A DBA suits a senior manager who wants applied research credentials and has checked the degree's recognition. An IIM executive PhD sits between the two.
