Overview
A Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is a research doctorate for experienced managers who want to study a real business problem while working. In India, check recognition before you pay: IIM executive doctoral programmes award a PhD, and many DBAs advertised here are foreign online degrees that need equivalence checks.
A Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is a professional doctorate in management for experienced working people. Instead of building new theory, you study a real business problem, collect evidence and defend a thesis. Before you pay for any DBA course, check one thing: will the degree be recognised for the purpose you need it for in India? As of October 2026, the IIM doctoral programmes for working professionals that we checked award a PhD, not a "DBA". Many DBAs sold in India come from foreign universities, and those need separate checks.
Both are doctorates and both end with a thesis. The difference is the purpose.
Here is the catch for India. The consolidated list of degree titles in UGC's Specification of Degrees notification, which Indian universities must follow, names doctorates such as Ph.D., D.Litt. and D.Sc. It does not list a "Doctor of Business Administration". So if an Indian university offers you a DBA, ask in writing which UGC-specified degree title will appear on your certificate.
A DBA degree is research focused, but the research starts from practice. You pick a real world business problem, such as customers leaving after the first year, a supply chain that keeps breaking, or a family firm that needs a succession plan. You then review what is already known, design a study, collect evidence and defend your findings in a thesis.
Most doctorate programmes, DBA or PhD, move through the same stages:
The original research in a DBA usually answers a practical question about business challenges: what works, for whom and why. It still needs the same discipline as any doctorate degree: a clear question, sound methods and evidence you can defend. For a side-by-side view, read our guide on DBA vs PhD in India.
If you want a doctorate while working and need it to be recognised in India, the executive PhD programmes at IIMs are the closest official equivalent of a DBA. They are demanding, research-heavy and selective. Fees below are taken from each IIM's own page.
| Programme | Who it is for | Duration | Published fee | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IIM Calcutta Executive Ph.D. | At least 8 years of full-time managerial, entrepreneurial or professional work after graduation | Ideally 5 years; 2 years of coursework, online and offline | ₹25,00,000 for academic year 2026-27, in four instalments | iimcal.ac.in, Executive Ph.D. fees and admissions pages |
| IIM Lucknow EFPM (Ph.D. for working executives) | Full-time employees with at least 7 years of work, aged 55 or below | Ordinarily 5 years (4 with direct second-year entry); part-time, non-residential | ₹7,50,000 (₹5,00,000 if exempted from the first year) | iiml.ac.in, EFPM admission information for 2026 |
| IIM Indore EDPMG (Executive Doctoral Programme in Management and Governance) | Officers of the Indian Administrative Services and Indian Armed Forces (pay level 11 and above) with at least 5 years of service | 4 years, extendable to a maximum of 6 | ₹9,80,000 | iimidr.ac.in, EDPMG admission brochure 2026 |
These programmes ask for a master's degree, or a four-year degree or professional qualification such as CA, with good marks, plus a research aptitude test or a valid test score and an interview. IIM Calcutta asks for a No Objection Certificate from your employer and holds its research aptitude test and interview in person on campus. Check the current admission notice before you plan around these figures. You can open the IIM Calcutta Executive Ph.D. fee page as an example of what an official fee page looks like.
If you need a doctorate that counts at Indian universities, the yardstick is the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022, notified on 7 November 2022. Compare any DBA offer against these rules.
| Rule | What the regulations say |
|---|---|
| Eligibility | A 2-year master's after a 3-year bachelor's, or a 1-year master's after a 4-year bachelor's, with at least 55% marks. A 5% relaxation applies to SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), differently-abled, EWS and other notified categories. Entry straight after a 4-year bachelor's needs 75%. |
| Admission | If you qualify for a fellowship or scholarship through UGC-NET, UGC-CSIR NET, GATE, CEED or a similar national test, a university may admit you on an interview. Otherwise you sit the university's own entrance test. That test is 50% research methodology and 50% subject. You need 50% in it to reach the interview, and selection weighs the test at 70% and the interview at 30%. |
| Duration | At least 3 years including coursework, and at most 6 years. Re-registration can add 2 more years, up to 8 in total. Women scholars and persons with more than 40% disability can get 2 further years, up to 10. |
| Coursework | At least 12 credits, including a Research and Publication Ethics course and a research methodology course. |
| Part-time study | Allowed if every condition is met. Your employer must give a No Objection Certificate saying you may study part time, have enough time for research and will be relieved for coursework if needed. |
| Online or distance mode | Not allowed. No higher education institution may run a PhD through distance or online mode. |
Degree titles matter too. UGC's 2022 letter to all vice-chancellors says any degree not named in its notifications on specification of degrees is treated as unrecognised by UGC.
Many "DBA course" advertisements you see in India are for degrees from foreign universities, often delivered online through an Indian partner. Some may be fine for a private-sector CV. Others will not count for a government job, a promotion rule, or teaching at an Indian university. Use these checks.
If you only need the learning and the title on a private-sector CV, a foreign online DBA may still suit you. If you need Indian recognition for jobs or teaching, an IIM executive PhD or a UGC-compliant PhD is the safer path. Our guide to online PhD rules in India explains UGC rules on online doctorates.
A DBA suits you if you are a senior manager, consultant or founder with many years of experience, you want to study a specific problem from your work in depth, and your goal is credibility in industry rather than a full-time academic career. It does not suit you if you want a quick title, if you cannot give it several years of steady research time, or if your target job needs a UGC-recognised PhD. Be wary of any offer that promises a "Dr" title without a real thesis defence. An honorary doctorate is given for achievement. It is not an earned degree with coursework and a thesis, so it cannot stand in for a DBA or PhD where an employer asks for one.
| Point | MBA | DBA | PhD in management |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you do | Taught courses, case studies and projects | Applied research on a business problem, ending in a thesis | Original research that adds to theory, ending in a thesis |
| Who usually joins | Graduates, often early in their careers | Senior managers with many years of work experience | Master's holders who meet UGC eligibility |
| Recognition check in India | UGC rules for an MBA, or AICTE approval for a PGDM | The exact degree title, and equivalence for a foreign award | UGC PhD Regulations 2022 |
If you only want a title, be careful. Our page on the honorary doctorate explains why an honorary award is not an earned doctorate. If you want a structured programme for senior leaders, put any executive DBA through the same recognition checks.
Each university sets its own rules, so there is no single DBA eligibility. The IIM executive programmes above give a sense of the bar: a master's degree or an equivalent qualification with good marks, 5 to 8 years or more of work depending on the IIM, a test score or research aptitude test, and an interview. Expect to write a research proposal at some stage. If you are mainly comparing online options, see the online DBA page, which covers fees and checks for online programmes.
If you are unsure which route fits your career, a counsellor can help you compare an executive PhD, a foreign DBA and a regular PhD before you commit money.

Admission
Simple steps from your first enquiry to enrolment.
Industry credibility, teaching, a government role or a promotion rule each need different recognition. Write your purpose down first.
For Indian degrees, check UGC recognition and the degree title. For foreign degrees, check AIU or UGC equivalence rules, including the bar on franchised and online awards.
Expect a master's or equivalent qualification, several years of work, a test score or research aptitude test, and an interview.
Most doctoral routes ask about your research interest. Pick a real problem from your work and read the faculty profiles in that area.
Before paying, ask for the total fee, thesis and extension charges, supervision plan and the exact degree title on the certificate.

FAQs
Quick answers to common questions.
It depends on the university. As a benchmark, IIM executive doctoral programmes ask for a master's degree or equivalent with good marks and long work experience: at least 7 years at IIM Lucknow's EFPM and 8 years at IIM Calcutta's Executive Ph.D., as of October 2026. Expect a test or research aptitude test and an interview.
There is no fixed list. A DBA or executive PhD is built around your research topic, so the real choice is the area and the faculty who will supervise you, such as finance, marketing, strategy or operations. IIM executive programmes publish their areas on their own pages. Read faculty research profiles before you apply, as IIM Calcutta advises.
No official source publishes a DBA salary figure for India, and no doctorate guarantees a raise. People who benefit usually already hold senior roles and use the research to build credibility in consulting, strategy or leadership. If your employer or a future role needs a UGC-recognised doctorate, check that first, because an unrecognised degree may not count at all.
Plan for several years. IIM executive doctoral programmes, the closest Indian equivalent, run longer than many advertised three-year DBAs: IIM Calcutta's Executive Ph.D. is ideally five years, IIM Lucknow's EFPM ordinarily five years, and IIM Indore's EDPMG four years with extensions up to six, as of October 2026.
Fees vary widely. Official IIM pages list ₹7,50,000 for IIM Lucknow's EFPM, ₹9,80,000 for IIM Indore's EDPMG and ₹25,00,000 for IIM Calcutta's Executive Ph.D. (academic year 2026-27), as of October 2026. For any foreign DBA, get the full fee in writing, including thesis, defence and extension charges.
No. Both are doctorates with a thesis, but a PhD aims at original theory and is the usual route into university teaching, while a DBA applies research to business practice. In India, UGC's consolidated list of specified degrees names the Ph.D. but not a DBA, so check how your target employer or university will treat the award.
Not under that name, among the IIM programmes we checked in October 2026. IIMs offer doctoral routes for working professionals that award a PhD, such as IIM Calcutta's Executive Ph.D., IIM Lucknow's EFPM and IIM Indore's EDPMG for government and armed forces officers. Be careful with any advert for an "IIM DBA" and confirm the awarding institution.
It may not be recognised. AIU's advisory says it does not grant equivalence to foreign degrees studied through online, distance or virtual modes. UGC's 2025 equivalence regulations exclude qualifications obtained through franchising, and UGC's December 2023 notice says online degrees offered by EdTech firms with foreign universities do not have UGC recognition.
It is a good fit if you have many years of senior experience, a real business problem you want to research, and several years to give it. It is a poor fit if you want a quick "Dr" title or need a UGC-recognised PhD for teaching or a government job. In that case, look at IIM executive PhDs or a regular PhD.
DBA stands for Doctor of Business Administration, a professional doctorate in management. In IT job listings, DBA can also mean database administrator, which is a different career and course. When you compare DBA courses, check that you are looking at a doctoral programme with a thesis, not a short certificate.
For an Indian degree, confirm the university is UGC-recognised and ask which UGC-specified degree title appears on the certificate. For a foreign degree, check AIU's equivalence rules and UGC's 2025 equivalence regulations, which exclude franchised awards. Ask the provider in writing whether you study online, through a franchise, or full time on campus.
Yes. UGC's PhD Regulations 2022 allow a part-time PhD if every condition is met. Your employer must give a No Objection Certificate. The PhD takes at least 3 years including coursework, with a maximum of 6. It cannot be done in online or distance mode, so plan for coursework and supervision on campus.
Do not assume it will. Indian universities follow UGC rules, which set standards for the PhD and treat degree titles outside UGC's specified list as unrecognised. If university teaching is your goal, a UGC-compliant PhD or an IIM executive PhD is the safer route. For a foreign DBA, check UGC equivalence before you enrol.
