An online MBA is a two-year Master of Business Administration that you study over the internet instead of on a campus. Classes, study material, assignments and exams all run through the university's learning platform. You get the same MBA degree title as a campus student, and most people take it while they keep working. Online MBA fees are also much lower than most campus programmes, from about ₹66,000 at IGNOU to over ₹2 lakh at large private universities.
The UGC's 2020 regulations define online mode as full-fledged programme delivery through the internet, using e-learning material and technology-assisted teaching. That is different from a distance MBA, which relies mainly on printed or self-study material with occasional contact classes. Our comparison of the online MBA and distance MBA explains the practical differences.
Yes, if the university is allowed to offer it. A university can run one only if the UGC permits it for that year, and the University Grants Commission's Distance Education Bureau publishes the list. The UGC-DEB programme list for 2026-27 shows online MBAs at IGNOU, NMIMS, Manipal University Jaipur, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Sikkim Manipal University, JAIN, Amity University, Symbiosis International, Chandigarh University, Lovely Professional University and many others.
Regulation 22 of the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020 says degrees earned in online mode from a recognised institution are equivalent to the same degrees earned in conventional mode. So a degree from a listed university counts the same as a campus MBA for jobs and further study. Two cautions: check the list for your own admission year, because approvals are renewed, and read each recruiter's or exam's notification, since some set their own rules. Our guide to UGC rules and validity goes through this in detail.
IIMs do not appear on the UGC-DEB online list. Their programmes for working professionals follow their own rules. IIM Ahmedabad's Blended Post Graduate Programme in Management, for example, mixes online classes with on-campus modules of about a week each term, needs three years of work experience and lists a programme fee of ₹20,00,000 for its 2026 intake, according to its admissions page.
Most universities admit you on graduation marks alone, without CAT or another entrance test. Rules published as of October 2026:
The process is usually the same: apply on the university portal, upload your degree documents, pay the first instalment and get access to the learning platform once eligibility is verified.
The programme runs for two years over four semesters. Most universities let you take longer if you need to: IGNOU allows up to 48 months, and NMIMS lists a four-year validity period for its programme. Classes combine recorded lectures with scheduled live sessions, and assignments count towards internal marks, as at NMIMS, which combines internal assessment with term-end exams. Manipal University Jaipur holds its term-end exams as computer-based, online-proctored tests that you take from your own laptop. IGNOU charges exam fees separately from its programme fee.
Fees run from about ₹66,000 at IGNOU to over ₹2 lakh at large private universities. The UGC-DEB list includes many online MBA colleges in India; the table covers six that students ask us about most and lists the general MBA fee each university publishes on its own website. Some specialisations cost more.
| University | Published fee | Source |
|---|---|---|
| IGNOU, MBA (Online) | ₹16,000 per semester for semesters I, II and IV and ₹18,000 for semester III (₹66,000 in all); exam fees are extra | ignou.ac.in MBA (Online) programme page |
| Sikkim Manipal University | ₹30,000 per semester, ₹1,20,000 in full | onlinemanipal.com SMU MBA and healthcare management pages |
| JAIN Online | ₹1,60,000 for single specialisations such as marketing, finance or HR (₹40,000 per semester), rising to ₹1,75,000 or ₹1,96,000 for dual and analytics tracks; plus ₹2,500 registration and ₹3,000 exam fee per year | onlinejain.com MBA and specialisation pages |
| Manipal University Jaipur | ₹46,000 per semester, ₹1,84,000 in full, plus a ₹500 application fee | onlinemanipal.com MUJ MBA and specialisation pages |
| NMIMS CDOE | ₹55,000 per semester, ₹1,05,000 per year or ₹1,96,000 in full, plus a ₹1,200 admission processing fee and ₹800 per subject per exam attempt | online.nmims.edu MBA hub and programme pages |
| Amity University Online | ₹56,300 per semester or ₹1,12,500 per year (₹2,25,000 in all), or ₹2,07,000 if paid in one go; hospital and healthcare track ₹3,29,000 | amityonline.com MBA General Management and specialisation pages |
Ask for the full fee sheet for your admission session, including exam and project fees, before you pay. For a single university in detail, read our breakdown of NMIMS online MBA fees. If your budget is tight, see our list of the best online MBAs under ₹1 lakh.
The headline fee is rarely what you pay. Exam, project and processing charges add up, and the way you pay changes the total. Here is the arithmetic for one programme, using the figures on the NMIMS CDOE online MBA (Business Analytics) page, which has 24 examined subjects and a project over four semesters.
| Item | Pay in full | Pay per semester |
|---|---|---|
| Programme fee | ₹1,96,000 | ₹2,20,000 (4 x ₹55,000) |
| Admission processing fee | ₹1,200 | ₹1,200 |
| Exam fees (24 subjects x ₹800) | ₹19,200 | ₹19,200 |
| Project fee | ₹800 | ₹800 |
| Total | ₹2,17,200 | ₹2,41,200 |
Two lessons apply to every university. Paying the full fee upfront can save you a meaningful sum, and every exam you have to retake adds to the bill, because exam fees are charged per attempt. Do the same sum for each programme on your shortlist before you compare them.
Some universities cut the fee for specific groups. As of October 2026, Amity University Online lists a merit-based scholarship of 20% for applicants with at least 85% aggregate in their previous qualification, and 20% scholarships for defence personnel with at least two years of service, Divyaang applicants with a valid disability certificate and Amity alumni, according to its scholarship page. Online Manipal advertises scholarships of up to 30% under merit, defence, Divyaang and alumni categories on its website, without listing the terms for each programme. Ask the university to confirm in writing which category you qualify for, the exact amount and whether it applies to every semester, before you pay the first instalment.
Most universities offer the same core first year and then let you pick a specialisation. Common choices are marketing, finance, human resources, operations, business analytics or data science, IT management, international business, logistics and supply chain, and hospital or healthcare management. Some, such as JAIN, also offer dual specialisations. Pick the specialisation that matches the job you want next, and check the actual elective papers rather than the name on the brochure.
An online MBA suits you if you already have a job and want a recognised management degree without a career break. It works well for engineers moving into management, sales and operations staff aiming for a manager role, people in family businesses, and anyone returning to work after a gap. Because you keep earning, the total cost is far lower than two years on a campus.
Look elsewhere if you are a fresh graduate who needs campus placements to land a first job. Online programmes offer career services, but they do not replace a campus placement season, and your current experience usually shapes your next salary more than the degree does. If you can take two years off and clear an entrance test, a full-time MBA gives you more peer learning and recruiter access. Also check the notification before you rely on the degree for a specific government job.

FAQs
Quick answers to common questions.
Applicants need a bachelor's degree in any discipline. Admission is based on qualifying marks with no entrance exam. Keep your mark sheets, identity proof and other documents ready, and speak to a counsellor if you are unsure whether your background qualifies.
The total programme fee is ₹2,00,000, which works out to about ₹50,000 per semester over 4 semesters. Exam fees and a one-time registration fee may apply, so confirm the current structure with a counsellor before paying.
The programme runs for 2 years and is split into 4 semesters. Lectures are available live and as recordings on the LMS, so you can study around work or family commitments from any location.
Yes. The university has UGC-DEB approval to offer degrees in online mode, along with a NAAC A++ grade, so the qualification is recognised like a regular degree. Always check current approval details on the official UGC-DEB list.
New batches start twice a year, around July or August and January or February. You register online, upload documents, pay the fee and wait for verification. An ABC ID and DEB ID are required for enrolment.
Yes, when the university and programme appear on the UGC-DEB list for your admission year. Regulation 22 of the UGC's 2020 regulations treats online degrees from recognised institutions as equivalent to campus degrees, so they count for jobs and higher studies. Some employers and government exams set their own rules, so read the notification before you apply.
IIMs do not appear on the UGC-DEB list of online programmes, but some run their own programmes for working professionals. For example, IIM Ahmedabad's Blended Post Graduate Programme in Management combines online classes with on-campus modules each term, needs at least three years of work experience and lists a programme fee of ₹20,00,000 for its 2026 intake. Check each IIM's own site for its format.
As of October 2026, published fees for the full programme are ₹66,000 at IGNOU, ₹1,20,000 at Sikkim Manipal University, ₹1,60,000 to ₹1,96,000 at JAIN Online depending on specialisation, ₹1,84,000 at Manipal University Jaipur, ₹1,96,000 at NMIMS CDOE and ₹2,25,000 at Amity University Online. Add exam, registration and project fees when you compare.
You need a bachelor's degree from a recognised university. IGNOU, NMIMS CDOE, Manipal University Jaipur and Sikkim Manipal University ask for 50% marks (45% for reserved categories), JAIN Online asks for 50%, and Amity University Online asks for 40% with a test for those below it. Most need no CAT, though Manipal Academy of Higher Education also asks for work experience.
Not always. IIM Ahmedabad's blended programme, for example, accepts a CAT score from the last five years, a GMAT or GRE score, or its own IIMA Admission Test, along with at least three years of work experience and 50% at graduation. Check each IIM's own admission page, because rules differ. University online MBAs on the UGC-DEB list usually need no entrance test at all.
Yes. An online MBA for working professionals lets you study through recorded lectures and evening or weekend live classes without leaving your job. It helps with promotions, role changes and moving into management, though results depend on your skills and experience.
The online MBA lasts 2 years in 4 semesters. Early semesters cover economics, accounting, marketing, finance, HR, operations and analytics. Later semesters cover strategy, leadership, project management, electives for your specialisation and a major project.
Common online MBA specialisations are marketing, finance, human resource management, business analytics, operations and supply chain, information technology and healthcare management. The options vary by university, so choose one that matches the role you want after graduating.
Start with UGC-DEB approval and NAAC grade, then compare the LMS, live class quality, specialisations, total fees, student support and career services. Speak to alumni if possible. The best online MBA is the one that fits your goals and budget.
It is worth it if you are working and want a recognised management degree for a promotion, a move into management or a change of function, without losing two years of salary. It is less useful if you are a fresher hoping for campus placements, because online programmes cannot match a campus placement season. Choose a UGC-DEB listed university and a specialisation that fits your next role.
Yes, at most universities. IGNOU, NMIMS CDOE, Manipal University Jaipur, Sikkim Manipal University, JAIN Online and Amity University Online admit fresh graduates on graduation marks. Manipal Academy of Higher Education asks for work experience, and fresh graduates must send a statement of purpose video. IIM Ahmedabad's blended programme needs at least three years of experience.
At many universities, yes. Manipal University Jaipur, for example, holds its term-end exams as computer-based, online-proctored tests that you take on a Windows laptop or desktop with the Chrome browser. NMIMS combines internal assessment with term-end exams and charges ₹800 per subject per attempt. Check the exam rules and device requirements of your university before you enrol.
Of the universities we checked in October 2026, IGNOU's MBA (Online) has the lowest published fee: ₹16,000 per semester for semesters I, II and IV and ₹18,000 for semester III, or ₹66,000 in all, plus exam fees. Sikkim Manipal University's online MBA is next at ₹1,20,000. State universities such as Andhra University and Madurai Kamaraj University also appear on the 2026-27 UGC-DEB list for online MBAs, so compare their fees too.
Usually, yes. IGNOU's MBA (Online) has a minimum duration of 24 months and a maximum of 48 months, and NMIMS lists a four-year validity period for its online MBA. Extra time helps if work or family commitments make you miss an exam cycle, but check the re-registration fees and deadlines that apply each semester.
Some universities offer them. As of October 2026, Amity University Online lists a 20% merit-based scholarship for applicants with at least 85% aggregate in their previous qualification, plus 20% concessions for defence personnel, Divyaang applicants and Amity alumni. Online Manipal advertises scholarships of up to 30% under merit and other categories. Get the exact terms in writing before you pay.
Add exam, project and processing fees to the programme fee. For NMIMS CDOE's online MBA (Business Analytics), as of October 2026, the ₹1,96,000 full-payment fee becomes about ₹2,17,200 once you add the ₹1,200 processing fee, ₹800 per subject for 24 exams and an ₹800 project fee, and about ₹2,41,200 if you pay semester by semester. Retaking an exam costs extra.
