Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad also known as IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is situated in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, and was established in 1926 and was constituted under the Institute of Technology Act, 1961. The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral,dual-degree, and executive programs in multiple specializations under its 18 different departments. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad became an IIT by a bill passed by the Rajya Sabha on 2nd August 2016, and the Indian School of Mines was established by Lord Irwin on 9th December 1926, whereas IIT Dhanbad's name was changed to Indian School of Mines in 1957, as it started offering programs in applied geophysics, and petroleum engineering in the same year. IIT Dhanbad is a globally recognized institution that ranks 42 under the overall category, 17 under the engineering, and 44 under the management category of NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework).
