DBA course fees: what you are really comparing

DBA course fees for online programmes depend on three things: the awarding university, the exact pathway and the payment agreement you sign. The Doctor of Business Administration, or DBA, is a professional doctorate in management. This page covers foreign online DBA offers for working professionals who want to research business problems while they keep their jobs.

A DBA goes beyond taught management study. You review evidence, design a study, analyse organisational data and defend a dissertation. It is research focused, but the questions come from professional practice. A foreign online DBA is not an Indian PhD. It is also not automatic proof that you can teach at an Indian university.

A worked example of an online DBA fee

Most foreign universities price a DBA per credit, in their own currency. Edgewood University in the US is one example. Its official tuition schedule lists DBA tuition at $500 per credit for 2026-27, and its DBA programme page lists 45 credits.

Treat this as a worked example, not a quote. Edgewood's international pathway also describes separate payment arrangements, so check which schedule applies to you. How to check the fee agreement

Read the university's current fee schedule and your written admission offer together. Before you pay:

• Confirm the currency, the credits required and the total tuition in the signed offer.
• Ask for an itemised list covering registration, dissertation supervision, assessment and any required residency.
• Check the deposit, payment dates, cancellation terms and refund rules.
• Get any approved scholarship in writing, with its conditions.
• For a foreign-currency agreement, check your bank's conversion and transaction charges.

Keep a standalone DBA offer separate from an MBA plus DBA pathway. They are different qualifications with different entry routes. Do not use a dual-award price as the price of a standalone doctorate.

Recognition for your intended use in India

First, check the awarding university's legal status and accreditation in its home country. Edgewood states that it holds institutional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. Institutional accreditation and accreditation of a single business programme are separate checks. Read the university's accreditation information.

Next, check how India will treat the award. These are the rules to know, as of October 2026:

• UGC equivalence: UGC's regulations on equivalence for foreign qualifications were notified on 4 April 2025. A qualification obtained through a franchising arrangement is not considered. The entry requirements must be similar to those of a matching programme in India. The UGC foreign qualification equivalence guidance adds that degrees earned entirely through distance learning or unaccredited online platforms may be scrutinised separately.
• Where an equivalence certificate counts: the regulations say a certificate issued under them is valid for higher education and research at institutions under UGC. It is also valid for public employment where a UGC-recognised qualification is essential.
• No Indian online PhD: UGC's PhD Regulations 2022 bar every Indian higher education institution from running a PhD through distance or online mode. So do not read an online doctorate as the same thing as an Indian PhD.
• EdTech offers: UGC's public notice of 12 December 2023 says online degree programmes advertised by EdTech companies with foreign universities are a franchise arrangement that is not permissible, and such degrees have no UGC recognition.

Do not assume foreign accreditation gives every online DBA Indian PhD equivalence, UGC approval or teaching eligibility. Before you rely on the degree for further study, public employment or teaching, ask the relevant Indian authority or receiving institution about your exact qualification and delivery mode. Keep the degree title, transcripts, accreditation evidence and programme details safe.

Eligibility, duration and how online DBA courses run

Entry requirements belong to each university and pathway. Edgewood, for example, asks for a master's degree and a minimum GPA. An advertised minimum completion time is not a guaranteed deadline. Confirm your eligibility, research workload and maximum registration period with admissions.

When you compare online doctorate programmes, look at:

• Live sessions and recorded material.
• How often you can reach your supervisor.
• Dissertation milestones and how the thesis is examined.
• Whether any attendance, travel or residency is required.

Plan the research around your job, not around the word "online".
