Overview
A two-year MBA with a marketing specialisation covering consumer behaviour, branding, sales and market research. Compare eligibility, official 2026 fees, subjects and careers before you apply.
An MBA marketing programme is a two-year Master of Business Administration in which you spend the first year on core management papers and the second year on marketing electives. You learn how customers decide, how brands are positioned, how sales teams and channels are run, and how to read market research before money is spent on a campaign.
In India you can take it full time on a campus, through open and distance learning, or online. The degree title is the same MBA in each case. What changes is how you are taught, what you pay and how much campus placement support you get. If your interest is mainly search, social and performance campaigns, also look at the MBA in Digital Marketing, which goes deeper into online channels.
The basic rule is a bachelor's degree with about 50% marks. For campus programmes, the entrance test sets the floor. The CAT 2026 eligibility notice asks for a bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA, and 45% for SC, ST and PwBD candidates. Final-year students can apply. CAT 2026 is on Sunday, 29 November 2026. Other schools accept XAT, CMAT, MAT, NMAT, SNAP or their own test, followed by a group discussion or interview.
Online and distance programmes usually admit on graduation marks alone. IGNOU asks for a three-year bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks (45% for reserved categories). NMIMS CDOE, Manipal University Jaipur and JAIN Online also set 50% at graduation, with relaxations for reserved categories at NMIMS and Manipal. None of these four asks for a CAT score for the online or distance MBA.
The degree takes two years and four semesters in every mode. NMIMS lists four years as the maximum validity period to finish its online MBA, which helps if work or family gets in the way of a semester.
For an online or distance degree, check one thing before you pay: the university and the exact programme must appear on the UGC-DEB list for your admission year. The UGC-DEB programme list for 2026-27 shows IGNOU's MBA (Marketing Management) under open and distance learning, and the MBA under online mode for NMIMS, Manipal University Jaipur, JAIN and Amity University. Under Regulation 22 of the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020, a degree earned this way from a recognised institution is treated as equivalent to the same degree earned in conventional mode.
Online and distance fees for the marketing specialisation are usually the same as the university's general MBA fee. Campus programmes at IIMs and large private B-schools charge many times more, so read each school's own fee page. The table lists what each university publishes on its own website.
| University and programme | Mode | Published fee | Source |

The first year is shared with every other MBA. At IGNOU it covers management functions, accounting for managers, quantitative analysis, marketing management, business communication, managerial economics, strategic management and financial management. NMIMS adds business analytics and operations management in semester two.
The marketing papers come in the second year. IGNOU's marketing specialisation lists Consumer Behaviour, Sales Management, Product and Brand Management, International Marketing, Marketing of Services, Marketing Research, Integrated Marketing Communication, Rural Marketing and Retail Management, plus a project report. NMIMS offers Brand Management, Consumer Behaviour, Integrated Marketing Communications, Sales Management, International Marketing, Services Marketing and Digital Marketing as electives. Amity's marketing and sales track adds Pricing Strategies, Direct Marketing, Customer Relationship Management and Advertising and Sales Promotion.
Expect numbers. Marketing research, quantitative analysis and business analytics all involve statistics and spreadsheet work, though less than a finance specialisation.
Common roles are brand or product manager, sales manager, key account manager, market research analyst, digital marketing manager and business development manager. FMCG, telecom, pharma, e-commerce and media companies hire for these roles. Many freshers start in sales or as management trainees before moving into a brand role.
Salary depends far more on the school and your prior experience than on the specialisation name. One official data point: IIM Lucknow's Final Placement Report 2025-26 shows a mean CTC of ₹28.5 lakh a year and a highest of ₹51.6 lakh for Sales and Marketing roles. That is a top-campus figure from a selective entrance, not what most marketing graduates earn. For any college you shortlist, ask for its audited placement report and the median for marketing roles. Our comparison of finance, marketing and HR pay shows how the three specialisations differ.
This specialisation suits you if you like talking to customers, can take a sales target, and enjoy working out why one product sells and another does not. It also suits working professionals in sales or business development who want a degree to move into a managerial role, often through an online MBA while staying in the job.
Look elsewhere if you dislike field work and targets, because most marketing careers in India begin close to sales. If your interest is markets, valuation or banking, the MBA in Finance is a better fit. If you want a general management degree with flexible electives, start with the broader online MBA page.

FAQs
Quick answers to common questions.
It depends mostly on the school and your experience before the MBA. At the top end, IIM Lucknow's Final Placement Report 2025-26 shows a mean CTC of ₹28.5 lakh a year for Sales and Marketing roles, but that is a selective campus, not a typical outcome. For any college you shortlist, ask for its audited placement report and the median for marketing roles.
MBA in marketing is a Master of Business Administration with a marketing specialisation. It covers consumer behaviour, branding, advertising, market research, digital marketing and sales strategy over about two years. Graduates aim for roles in marketing, brand, sales and business development.
As of October 2026, IGNOU's distance MBA (Marketing Management) costs ₹66,000 for the full programme plus registration and exam fees. Online fees for the marketing specialisation are ₹1,60,000 at JAIN Online, ₹1,84,000 at Manipal University Jaipur, ₹1,96,000 at NMIMS CDOE (paid in full) and ₹2,25,000 at Amity University Online. Campus programmes at IIMs and private B-schools cost much more.
They typically include marketing management, consumer behaviour, brand management, digital marketing, sales and distribution, advertising, market research, retail marketing and strategic marketing. Many programmes also add an internship, live project or dissertation in the final year.
MBA in sales and marketing combines brand planning with revenue and channel skills. You learn product positioning, distribution, sales targets, negotiation and team leadership alongside core marketing papers. It suits people who enjoy customer-facing work and measurable growth goals.
Most institutes ask for a bachelor degree in any discipline from a recognised university. Many require around 50 percent marks, though cut-offs differ. Some also expect a valid score in CAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT, SNAP, NMAT, GMAT or their own entrance test.
A full-time marketing MBA usually runs for two years across four semesters. Online and distance options follow a similar academic length but with flexible class schedules. Always check the exact credit and semester plan with your chosen university.
Check eligibility, apply online with documents, take the required entrance test if asked, then attend group discussion or interview rounds. Selected candidates receive an offer and pay fees within the stated deadline. Steps can vary by university and study mode.
Yes. The UGC-DEB list for 2026-27 shows IGNOU's MBA (Marketing Management) in distance mode and online MBAs at NMIMS, Manipal University Jaipur, JAIN and Amity University, all of which offer a marketing specialisation. Under UGC Regulation 22 of 2020, such degrees are equivalent to campus degrees. Check that your university and programme are on the list for your admission year before paying.
Graduates work as marketing managers, brand managers, digital marketing managers, sales managers, product managers, market research analysts and business development managers. Demand spans FMCG, retail, e-commerce, tech, media, banking and consulting.
Yes, if you enjoy brands, customers and growth problems. The specialisation supports careers across many industries and can lead to leadership roles in marketing and sales. Outcomes still depend on skills, experience and the institute you choose.
Common exams include CAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT, SNAP, NMAT and GMAT. Some universities also run their own aptitude test or offer merit-based admission. Check the exact list on each institute admission page for 2026.
The first semester is the same for every MBA specialisation. At IGNOU it covers Management Functions and Organisational Processes, Human Resource Management, Business Environment, Accounting for Managers, Quantitative Analysis for Managerial Applications, Marketing Management and Business Communication. Marketing electives such as consumer behaviour and brand management start in the second year.
Yes, but it is applied maths, not theory. You will study statistics and quantitative methods in the first year, along with accounting and financial management, and marketing research in the second year uses survey data and analysis. If you did not study maths after Class 12, revise basic statistics and spreadsheets before you start.
It is worth it if you enjoy customers, selling and brand problems and can handle sales targets early in your career. The return depends heavily on where you study: a selective campus with strong placements pays back faster, while an online MBA works best when you already have a job in sales or business development and want to move into a managerial role.
Neither is better for everyone. Choose marketing if you like people, persuasion and consumer insight, and finance if you prefer numbers, valuation and markets. At IIM Lucknow in 2025-26, Finance roles had a mean CTC of ₹34.8 lakh and Sales and Marketing roles ₹28.5 lakh, so finance paid more at that campus, but your fit with the work matters more than a gap at one school.
An MBA in marketing covers the whole function: consumer behaviour, brand management, sales, distribution, pricing and marketing research, with digital marketing as one elective. An MBA in digital marketing spends most of its electives on online channels such as search, social media, content and performance campaigns. Pick the broader marketing MBA if you want brand or sales leadership roles.
