Overview
A two-year MBA for running hospitals: departments, patient services, quality and NABH accreditation. Compare eligibility, official 2026 fees, subjects, jobs and salary data before you apply.
An MBA in hospital management is a two-year management degree for people who want to run hospitals; many universities title it hospital administration. The first year teaches core management. The second year moves inside the hospital: planning beds and departments, managing clinical and diagnostic services, support and utility services, patient flow, billing, medical records, quality and legal compliance.
This page is about running hospitals. If you are more interested in pharma companies, health insurance, public health programmes or health-tech, read our page on the broader MBA in Healthcare Management. Many universities combine both under the title MBA in hospital and healthcare management, so check how much of the syllabus is actually hospital-focused.
You need a bachelor's degree in any subject. Doctors, nurses, pharmacists and physiotherapists apply, but so do commerce, science and engineering graduates. Typical rules as of October 2026:
For campus MBAs that use CAT, the 2026 rule is 50% at graduation (45% for SC, ST and PwBD), and CAT 2026 is on 29 November 2026.
The programme runs for two years on campus. IGNOU's distance version allows a minimum of 24 months and a maximum of 48 months. IIHMR University splits its two years into five terms.
Distance and online degrees are only valid if the university and the programme are recognised for your admission year. The UGC-DEB programme list for 2026-27 shows IGNOU's MBA (Health Care and Hospital Management) in open and distance learning mode and Amity University's MBA in online mode. Under Regulation 22 of the UGC's 2020 regulations for open, distance and online programmes, such degrees are equivalent to campus degrees. An online course still cannot replace time inside a hospital, so look for an internship, practicum or project in a real hospital.
Fees range from under ₹70,000 for distance study to over ₹13 lakh for a specialist campus programme. The table lists what each university publishes on its own website.
| University and programme | Mode | Published fee | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| IGNOU, MBA (Health Care and Hospital Management) | Distance (ODL) | ₹16,000 each for semesters I and II, ₹20,000 for semester III and ₹18,000 for semester IV, ₹68,000 for the full programme; exam fees are extra | ignou.ac.in programme page and IGNOU Samarth admission portal |
| Amity University Online, MBA (Hospital and Healthcare Management) | Online | ₹82,300 per semester or ₹1,64,500 per year (₹3,29,000 in all), or ₹3,02,680 if paid in one go | amityonline.com programme page and Amity Online home page |
| Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, MBA (Healthcare and Hospital Management) | Full time | ₹1,65,250 for semester I including one-time fees, then ₹1,45,750 per semester (about ₹6.03 lakh over four semesters); hostel extra | Jamia Hamdard Prospectus 2026 and fee corrigendum of 3 July 2026 |
| IIHMR University, Jaipur, MBA (Hospital and Health Management) | Full time | ₹2,70,000 per term for five terms, ₹13,50,000 in all; hostel extra | iihmr.edu.in programme page |

IGNOU's specialisation papers show what a hospital-focused syllabus looks like: Hospital Planning and Administration, Clinical and Diagnostic Services, Support and Utility Services, Health Care Delivery System, Health Economics, Operations Management in Health Care, Supply Chain Management, Legal and Ethical Aspects in Healthcare Management and Emerging Issues in Health Care Management, followed by a practicum, a project and an internship. The Health Care Delivery System paper is where you learn how health systems in India are organised across public and private providers, which matters when your hospital works with government schemes or referral networks. Amity's track includes management of clinical and non-clinical departments, patient care management in critical care, strategic healthcare leadership and advanced hospital operations.
Quality and accreditation run through all of this. Hospitals that seek accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) are assessed against its 6th Edition hospital standards. NABH also runs an entry-level certification programme for hospitals and digital health standards for hospital IT systems. A good programme teaches you how to prepare a hospital for an NABH assessment, not just what the letters stand for.
Graduates work as hospital administrators, operations managers, patient services or front office managers, quality and accreditation coordinators, medical records or hospital information system leads, and unit or department managers. Employers include private hospital groups and chains, government and trust hospitals, medical colleges, diagnostic chains and hospital consulting firms. Many people start as management trainees or executives in a single department before moving into unit administration.
For salary, use placement data from the institution itself. IIHMR University's NIRF 2026 submission reports that 218 of 225 graduates of its two-year PG programmes were placed in 2024-25, at a median salary of ₹7.2 lakh a year. That covers all its two-year PG programmes, not only hospital management, and outcomes elsewhere will differ. Our guide to healthcare and hospital management fees and salary covers the wider sector.
This specialisation suits you if you want to work inside hospitals and are comfortable with long hours, emergencies and constant coordination between doctors, nurses, patients and vendors. It is a natural next step for clinical staff such as nurses who want to move into administration. If you are still choosing a first degree, our B.Sc Nursing page explains the clinical route.
Look elsewhere if you want a regular nine-to-five desk job or a role in pharma sales, insurance or policy. In that case, the broader healthcare management MBA is the better fit. If you need to keep a full-time job, compare the online and distance routes in our guide to the MBA for working professionals.

FAQs
Quick answers to common questions.
It is a two-year postgraduate degree that trains you to run hospital operations, patient services, staffing, finance, quality systems and compliance. Many universities title it hospital administration, and it focuses on facility-level leadership rather than broad healthcare policy alone.
Most colleges ask for a bachelor's degree from a recognised university, often with about 50% aggregate marks. Some prefer a health or management background. Many full-time seats also need a management entrance score and an interview. Always check the current prospectus for that institute.
These jobs usually sit inside hospitals and hospital groups. Common roles include hospital administrator, operations manager, patient services manager, quality coordinator and medical records or HIS lead. Some graduates move into hospital consulting or new-unit project roles.
It depends on the institution and your experience. One official data point: IIHMR University's NIRF 2026 submission reports a median salary of ₹7.2 lakh a year for the 218 graduates of its two-year PG programmes placed in 2024-25. That figure comes from one specialist university and covers all its PG programmes, so ask each college you shortlist for its own placement numbers and median.
Yes, if you want to work inside hospitals and can handle long hours, emergencies and constant coordination. The degree works best when combined with real hospital exposure through internships or prior work, and with skills in quality systems such as NABH accreditation. If you prefer pharma, insurance or policy roles, a broader healthcare management MBA fits better.
Many institutes accept CAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT, SNAP, NMAT, GMAT or their own management tests. Some seats are merit-based with an interview. Confirm which route applies to your shortlisted college for the 2026 intake.
Check hospital internships, an operations-heavy syllabus, faculty background, approvals, mode flexibility and clear fee rules. Prefer colleges that place students into admin roles inside hospitals, not only generic management jobs.
The usual duration is two years, divided into four semesters. Online and distance formats may follow a similar credit load with a different class schedule. Always confirm the semester plan in the university handbook.
Typical modules include hospital administration, operations, healthcare finance, patient care management, quality systems, medical ethics and laws, information systems, policy and planning, plus a project or internship. Exact subjects differ by university.
Yes. IGNOU offers the MBA (Health Care and Hospital Management) by distance, and Amity University Online offers an MBA in Hospital and Healthcare Management; both universities appear on the UGC-DEB list for 2026-27. Under UGC Regulation 22 of 2020 these degrees are equivalent to campus degrees. Check whether the programme includes a practicum or internship in a real hospital.
Hospital administration focuses on running a hospital unit: operations, patient services, quality and facility leadership. Healthcare management is broader and may cover networks, insurance, public health or policy roles outside a single hospital.
You typically shortlist colleges, meet eligibility rules, write any required entrance exam, submit documents, attend interview or counselling, then confirm the seat and fee schedule. Exact steps differ by institute and study mode.
There is no fixed monthly figure. As one official reference, IIHMR University's NIRF 2026 data shows a median annual salary of ₹7.2 lakh for its 2024-25 PG graduates, which works out to about ₹60,000 a month before deductions. Starting pay at other institutions, smaller hospitals and smaller cities can be lower, so check each college's own placement report.
Yes. IGNOU's School of Health Sciences offers the MBA (Health Care and Hospital Management) in distance mode, and it appears on the UGC-DEB list for 2026-27. You need a three-year bachelor's degree with 50% marks (45% for reserved categories). As of October 2026 the fee is ₹68,000 for the full programme, plus exam fees, and you have 24 to 48 months to finish.
No. MHA (Master of Hospital Administration) is a separate degree, while this one is an MBA with a hospital specialisation. Both prepare you for hospital administration roles and the syllabus often overlaps. An MBA includes broader management papers such as marketing and finance. Check the degree title, recognition and hospital internship before choosing either.
As of October 2026, published fees are ₹68,000 at IGNOU (distance), ₹3,29,000 at Amity University Online, about ₹6.03 lakh at Jamia Hamdard (₹1,65,250 for the first semester, then ₹1,45,750 per semester) and ₹13,50,000 at IIHMR University, Jaipur. Hostel, exam and one-time charges can add to these, so ask for the full fee sheet.
Two lower-cost public options are IGNOU, a central open university that offers the MBA (Health Care and Hospital Management) by distance, and Jamia Hamdard in New Delhi, a government-aided deemed university that runs a full-time MBA in Healthcare and Hospital Management with 60 seats. State universities also run hospital administration programmes, so check your state university's current prospectus.
