B Sc Nursing course: what it is and who regulates it
BSc Nursing is a four-year professional degree that trains you to practise nursing and midwifery in hospitals, community health programmes and other care settings. The Indian Nursing Council (INC) sets the curriculum, eligibility and college standards under its 2020 regulations for the degree, and your university conducts the exams. After you graduate, you register with your State Nursing Registration Council before you can work as a registered nurse.

BSc Nursing eligibility and admission
The INC regulations set the minimum. You need Class 12 in science with at least 45% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together, and a pass in English. SC, ST and OBC candidates need 40% in the three science subjects. Students from NIOS or a state open school with science and English are also eligible. You must be at least 17 on 31 December of the admission year and medically fit.
Colleges can set a higher bar. AIIMS's 2025 prospectus asked for 55% in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (50% for SC and ST), and admitted only women to the course. Sharda University lists 50% in PCB. Check the college notice, not just the INC minimum.
Under the INC regulations, selection is on the merit of an entrance exam conducted by a university or state government. So the exam you write depends on where you apply:
- State or university tests: Punjab's Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, for example, held PPMET-2026 on 31 May 2026 for nursing seats in the state.
- AIIMS: runs its own entrance for seats across the participating AIIMS.
- NEET UG: the Military Nursing Service uses NEET scores to shortlist for its four-year course, and the Medical Counselling Committee's 2026 counselling included some B.Sc Nursing seats.
Duration, internship and why there is no online B.Sc Nursing
The programme runs for four years across eight semesters and carries 156 credits. The eighth semester is a full internship of 22 weeks in clinical areas, and it is compulsory. You must have at least 80% attendance in theory and practical for each course to sit the exam, and 100% attendance in every practical area before the degree is awarded. You get a maximum of eight years to finish.
BSc Nursing cannot be studied in online or distance mode. The UGC Open and Distance Learning and Online Programmes Regulations, 2020 list Nursing among the prohibited programmes for both modes, and the UGC's Distance Education Bureau repeats this in its current instructions. If anyone offers you an online version, do not pay. Post Basic B.Sc Nursing is a separate programme with its own rules.
BSc Nursing fees at selected colleges
Fees run from a few hundred rupees at AIIMS to several lakh rupees at private universities. Government seats usually cost less than private seats. The table shows figures taken from each institution's own published documents.

Add hostel, mess, uniform, books, university registration and exam fees to compare the real four-year cost. BFUHS, for instance, charges a separate university registration fee of ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 depending on the college and quota. Confirm the current fee in writing before you pay, because colleges and state governments revise fees each session.
BSc Nursing subjects and clinical training
The early semesters cover the sciences behind care: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, nutrition, microbiology, pharmacology, pathology, psychology and sociology, alongside nursing foundations and communicative English. Later semesters move to adult health (medical-surgical) nursing, child health, mental health, community health, and midwifery and obstetric nursing, plus nursing research, management and professional ethics. Clinical hours run through every year, so a large part of your week is spent in wards and community postings rather than classrooms. INC also builds short skill modules, such as first aid and basic life support, into the semesters.
Careers after B Sc Nursing
Once registered, you can work as a staff nurse or nursing officer in government and private hospitals, or in critical care, emergency, operation theatre, paediatric and maternity units. Other routes include community and public health nursing, school and occupational health, and clinical research support. Government hospitals recruit nursing officers through their own recruitment exams, so read each notice for the age limit, registration and experience rules.
To teach or specialise, most nurses take an MSc Nursing. Pay varies by employer, state and city. For government posts, the pay level is printed in each recruitment notice, which is a more reliable guide than figures quoted online.
Who this course suits, and who should look elsewhere
The course suits you if you want hands-on patient care, can handle shift work and long clinical hours, and are steady under pressure. It is one of the clearest routes from a PCB background into a registered healthcare profession.
Look elsewhere if you prefer working away from patients. A BSc in Medical Laboratory Technology keeps you in diagnostics, a B.Pharm centres on medicines, a BPT trains you in physiotherapy and rehabilitation, and BSc Biotechnology leads to lab and research work. If your goal is to become a doctor, that route is MBBS through NEET UG, not nursing.
How to choose a B.Sc Nursing college
- Check that the college appears on the INC list of recognised nursing institutions for your admission year, and that it is recognised by the state nursing council and affiliated to a university.
- Ask which hospital you will train in, how many beds it has, and whether postings include community health and midwifery.
- Confirm the admission route and dates: state test, university test, AIIMS or NEET-based counselling.
- Get the full four-year fee schedule, hostel charges and refund policy in writing.
- Ask about faculty strength, skill labs and transport to clinical sites.
- Check that the internship is built into the eighth semester as INC requires.

You need to be a registered B.Sc or Post Basic B.Sc nurse with one year of clinical experience, preferably in an ICU or operation theatre. INC's FAQ treats the critical care degree as equivalent to an M.Sc Nursing.
