Post graduate diploma courses are one-year programmes for graduates, worth 40 credits under the UGC's postgraduate framework, and they sit one step below a master's degree. You get a diploma, not an M.A., M.Com or MBA. That makes a PG diploma a good fit for a quick, job-specific upgrade, and a poor fit when a job or exam asks for a master's degree.
The rules below come from the UGC's Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate Programmes (June 2024), read on ugc.gov.in. Most guides skip this and just list course names, so you end up comparing diplomas without knowing what the qualification is. For the IGNOU route in particular, our guide to IGNOU PG diploma courses has the prospectus fees.
What is a post graduate diploma, according to UGC?
The UGC framework places the PG diploma at level 6 of the National Higher Education Qualifications Framework (NHEQF), with 40 credits. A master's degree sits higher, at level 6.5 or 7. The framework also says that a student in a two-year PG programme who leaves at the end of the first year is awarded a Postgraduate Diploma, and that there is only one such exit point.
| Qualification | NHEQF level | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| Post graduate diploma | 6 | 40 |
| 1-year PG after a 4-year UG degree | 6.5 | 40 |
| 2-year PG after a 3-year UG degree | 6.5 | 40 + 40 |
| 2-year PG after a 4-year UG such as B.E. or B.Tech | 7 | 40 + 40 |
Read the table plainly: a PG diploma carries the same 40 credits as the one-year master's, but it is placed at a lower level. It is a real postgraduate qualification, and it is not a shortcut to a master's title.
PG diploma eligibility: who can join
The UGC framework describes entry to PG programmes through a bachelor's degree: a 3-year degree with 120 credits for the two-year route, or a 4-year Honours degree with 160 credits for the one-year route. Individual diplomas then add their own conditions, such as a subject background or a minimum percentage. So the working answer is a bachelor's degree in any discipline for many diplomas, and a specific discipline for technical ones.
Ask whether your degree subject is accepted. A diploma in computer applications may need Mathematics; a diploma in hospital administration may not.
Check the minimum marks. Some institutions set a cut-off such as 50% for general category applicants.
Check whether final-year students can apply provisionally. Practice differs by institution.
If you are still choosing between routes after graduation, our post on the best master's degree for promotion shows when a diploma is enough and when it is not.
PG diploma duration and course structure
Under the UGC framework, a PG diploma is a one-year, two-semester programme made up of 40 credits of coursework at level 400, and the framework says PG programmes should include vocational courses relevant to the discipline. Many institutions follow this, so expect applied subjects, a project and sometimes an internship, with less emphasis on a research thesis than in a master's.
Open and distance universities often set a minimum and a maximum period, so a one-year diploma may allow more time to finish. Check the rule for the exact programme before you assume a 12-month limit.
Popular PG diploma courses by field
The list changes by institution, so use it as a map of fields and confirm the exact title and award on the university's own programme page.
| Field | Examples of PG diplomas | Read next |
|---|---|---|
| Computers and IT | PG Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA), data science, cyber security | PGDCA course page and computer application courses |
| Human resources | PG Diploma in Human Resource Management (PGDHRM) | HR management courses compared |
| Logistics | PG Diploma in Logistics and Supply Chain Management | PGDLSCM course page |
| Banking | PG Diploma in Banking | PG Diploma in Banking course page |
| Healthcare management | PG Diploma in Hospital Administration (PGDHA) | hospital management course routes |
| Education and media | PGDE, journalism, yoga | Check the awarding university's own page |
PG diploma vs master's degree: which one do you need?
Choose a master's degree if the job, promotion rule, PhD route or government exam you have in mind asks for a postgraduate degree. Choose a PG diploma when you need one practical skill set fast, want a lower-cost step, or are testing a field before committing two years. Check the eligibility line in the notification of any exam you plan to take, because a diploma is a different award from a degree.
Management is where confusion is common. A PG diploma in management, a PGDM and an MBA are not the same award, and we explain the difference in MBA vs PGDM.
Online and distance PG diploma: check recognition first
The UGC framework says degree or diploma programmes in open, distance or online mode should be pursued only with institutions recognised by UGC, a statutory council or the Government of India for running such programmes. It also allows a student to study two programmes at once, including up to two online or distance programmes together.
How to choose the right post graduate diploma
Write down the one job or skill you want in the next 12 months. A diploma works when the goal is that narrow.
Check that your bachelor's degree and marks meet the programme's entry rule.
Confirm the awarding university and the mode (campus, online or distance) are recognised for that programme.
Read the syllabus for projects and practical work, not just subject titles.
Compare the total fee, including exam and registration charges, on the university's official fee page.
Ask whether the diploma credits can be carried toward a master's later. Credit transfer rules vary, so get the answer in writing from the institution.

Frequently asked questions
What are post graduate diploma courses?
They are one-year postgraduate programmes for graduates. In the UGC's framework, a PG diploma carries 40 credits at NHEQF level 6, which is below the level of a master's degree.
What is the eligibility for a PG diploma?
A bachelor's degree is the base requirement. Each programme then sets its own conditions, such as a subject background or minimum marks, so read the eligibility line for the exact course.
How long is a PG diploma course?
The UGC framework treats a PG diploma as a one-year, two-semester programme. Distance universities may allow a longer maximum period, so check the rule for your programme.
Is a PG diploma equal to a master's degree?
No. The UGC framework places a PG diploma at level 6 and a master's at level 6.5 or 7, so employers and exams that ask for a master's degree may not accept a diploma.
Can I do a PG diploma online?
Yes, if the university is recognised to run that programme in online or distance mode. Verify the university and programme before you pay.
Can I study two programmes at the same time?
The UGC framework allows two programmes at once in defined combinations, including one full-time programme with one online or distance programme, or up to two online or distance programmes. Check your university's own rules too.
Will a PG diploma help me get a job?
It can help when you want a specific skill and employers in that field value it. No course guarantees a job or salary, so check real job notices for your target role.
