A hospital management course trains you for the non-clinical side of a hospital: admissions, billing, supplies, quality, records and patient services. You do not need an MBA to start. After Class 12 the usual route is a four-year BBA in hospital management, and if you already work in a hospital, a one-year PG diploma is the quicker option.
If you already hold a degree and want the master's route, our MBA in hospital management page covers fees and salary data. This guide covers everything else, using programme pages from IGNOU and universities read in October 2026.

Hospital management course after 12th: the BBA route
A BBA in hospital management is a business degree with the hospital as the workplace. You study the same management basics as any BBA, then add papers on hospital operations, health economics and medical records. Entry needs only Class 12, and the programmes below accept any stream.
| University | Eligibility | Duration | Fee on the page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brainware University | Minimum 50% in 10+2, any discipline; 5% relaxation for reserved categories; merit-based, with its own entrance test where required | 4 years | Rs 4,92,600 across eight semesters (Rs 80,700 in semester 1, falling to Rs 54,200 in semester 8); fees subject to change |
| AIPH University (BBA Health Management) | 10+2 in any stream with minimum 50%; preference for Biology or Maths | 3+1 years, 8 semesters | Rs 25,000 per semester |
| JIS University | Minimum 50% in 10+2, any stream, plus the university's entrance exam (JET) | 4 years | Not shown on the programme page; ask for the prospectus |
Read the sources yourself before you shortlist: the Brainware University programme page and the AIPH University page both list fees and subjects. The fee gap between them is large, so compare the total over the whole course, not just the first semester. Run the total through our education loan EMI calculator if you plan to borrow.
What you study in a hospital management course
Brainware's page gives a full semester-by-semester list, which is the best picture of the content. Early semesters build the base, with Hospital and Healthcare System in India and Principles and Practices of Management in semester 1, then Hospital Operations Management, Hospital Inventory and Store Management and Health Economics in semester 2.
The hospital-specific papers come in the middle: Quality Management in Healthcare and Fundamentals of Hospital Planning in semester 4, then Epidemiology, Medical Ethics and Legal Aspects of Healthcare, Medical Record Science and an internship or project in semester 5. Semester 6 adds Health Insurance and Bio-Medical Waste Management. AIPH's year-wise list is lighter on detail but covers Medical Terminology and Health Economics in year 1, Clinical Services in year 3, and Healthcare Strategy and Insurance in year 4.
Practical tip: the internship decides how useful the degree is. Brainware lists an internship or project in semester 5 and AIPH lists Internship I in year 2. Ask any college which hospitals take its students, for how many weeks, and whether the placement is guaranteed in writing.
Hospital management course eligibility: who can apply
All three programmes above accept students from any Class 12 stream, so Arts and Commerce students can apply as well as Science students. Each asks for 50% marks, and AIPH says it prefers students with Biology or Maths. JIS admits through its own entrance exam, while Brainware admits mainly on merit. Confirm the cut-off and the current session's rules on the college's admission page, because they change each year.
PG diploma in hospital management: not for every graduate
IGNOU's Post Graduate Diploma in Health and Hospital Management is the best-known distance option, and it is easy to misread. It is not open to any graduate. The programme page lists three eligibility routes: a graduate in any recognised system of medicine; a nursing, pharmacy or allied health graduate or postgraduate with at least two years' experience in a hospital of 100 or more beds; or a graduate or postgraduate in any field with at least five years in a supervisory or managerial role in such a hospital.
The programme takes a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 36 months, is taught in English, and the page shows a fee of Rs 25,200 per year, with exam fees decided by the university and not included. Its Year 1 courses are Introduction to Management, Hospital Services, and Organisation and Management of Hospital and Health Services, plus two practical courses. Students attend contact sessions at a learner support centre. For other universities offering a similar diploma, see our PG diploma in hospital administration page.
Which hospital management course should you choose?
Class 12 pass, sure about hospitals: a BBA in hospital management, chosen for its internship and hospital tie-ups.
Class 12 pass, unsure: a general BBA, then specialise in an MBA; our MBA in healthcare and hospital management guide shows that path.
Doctor, nurse or pharmacist moving to administration: the IGNOU PG diploma, if you meet its experience rule.
Hospital supervisor or manager with 5 years' experience: the PG diploma, or an MBA if you want a master's degree.
Graduate with no hospital background: an MBA in hospital management.
If you pick an online or distance programme, check that the university and the exact programme are in the UGC-DEB approved list for your admission session. No course can promise a job or a salary, so ask for placement data from the last two batches before you pay.
