MBA salary in India depends far more on the college and your work history than on the degree itself. Audited placement data shows a median of about Rs 29.3 lakh a year at IIM Ahmedabad for the Class of 2025, and NIRF data shows a median near Rs 11.5 lakh at a mid-tier PGDM school. For most MBAs the realistic first-job range sits well below the IIM headlines.
What an MBA salary in India looks like at the top
The cleanest numbers come from IIM Ahmedabad, which publishes an audited placement report under the Indian Placement Reporting Standards. In the audited report for the PGP Class of 2025, 393 students took domestic offers. The lowest total guaranteed cash was Rs 15.99 lakh, the median Rs 29.30 lakh and the mean Rs 29.84 lakh. Including the maximum earning potential (variable pay and other components), the median rose to Rs 34.53 lakh.
Read the word guaranteed carefully. IIMA defines total guaranteed cash as the fixed yearly cash plus one-time cash payments such as a joining bonus. Variable pay is counted separately, so two colleges can both say 'average package' and mean different things. Whenever you compare colleges, ask which pay head the figure includes.
Median MBA salary by college tier: what NIRF data shows
NIRF asks every ranked management institute to report the median salary of placed graduates in its two-year programme. These are self-reported by each institute for the India Rankings 2025 submission, so treat them as indicative. The table shows the batch graduating in 2023-24 for three very different schools.
| Institute | Students graduating | Students placed | Median salary (Rs per year) |
|---|---|---|---|
| IIM Ahmedabad (PGP) | 444 | 434 | 31 lakh |
| XLRI, Xavier School of Management | 384 | 382 | 28 lakh |
| Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research (PGDM) | 653 | 635 | 11.5 lakh |
The gap is the real lesson. A placed graduate at a mid-tier PGDM school has a median salary of roughly a third of the IIMA figure. Even so, Rs 11.5 lakh a year works out to about Rs 95,800 a month in CTC terms before deductions, which is a solid start for a first corporate job. The three schools are examples at different tiers, not a ranking. Before you shortlist colleges, check the full list on our NIRF management ranking page and read each institute's own data on nirfindia.org.
Why two MBA graduates can earn very different salaries
Placement medians hide the factors that move your own number. These are the ones that matter most, in rough order of influence:
College and cohort: recruiters visit a fixed set of campuses, so the campus decides which companies even see your CV.
Prior work experience: IIMA's report separates lateral hires with work experience, who join in mid-level roles, from fresh graduates. Experience changes the entry level you negotiate from.
Function and sector: consulting made up 156 of the 395 accepted offers in IIMA's 2025 report, ahead of banking, financial services and insurance at 99. Pay differs by function, which our guide to highest-paying MBA specialisations and the finance vs marketing vs HR comparison cover in detail.
Pay structure: fixed pay, joining bonus and variable pay are different things. Ask for the fixed component and the guaranteed component separately.
MBA salary for freshers vs working professionals
A fresher entering a full-time MBA at a top institute is hired mainly on campus potential. A working professional is hired on a record: team size handled, revenue managed, delivery numbers. That is why an executive or part-time MBA tends to move pay through promotion and role change within the same employer or sector, not through a placement-season jump.
IIMA's report shows the same split inside one college: about 59% of the 2025 batch was eligible for lateral placements, meaning recruiters were specifically hiring people with prior experience for mid-level roles. If you already have three to five years of work, the more useful question is not 'what is the average package' but 'which roles above mine does this degree open'. Our post on how an online MBA helps with promotion works through that.
Online and distance MBA salary: what is and is not known
There is no audited, comparable placement report for online or distance MBA cohorts in India, so any single 'online MBA salary' figure you see quoted has no official source behind it. What we can say from the rules is narrower. A UGC-DEB approved online MBA is a valid degree, so you can use it for jobs and promotions. Check the specific university and programme on our UGC-DEB approved universities page before you pay anything.
Pay after an online MBA usually depends on what you do with it at your current employer or in your next application. If you are comparing it with a campus programme, the honest comparison is cost against likely role change, which we work through in is an online MBA worth it in 2026. Programme pages such as online MBA and the main MBA course page list current fees, so you can set the cost against the pay range you are aiming for.
How to judge an MBA's salary claims before you enrol
Ask for the audited or NIRF median, not the 'average' or 'highest' package. The highest figure is one student's offer.
Check how many students were placed out of how many graduated, as the NIRF table above shows.
Find out whether the number includes variable pay, joining bonuses or stock options.
Compare the figure with your total course cost, including interest if you take a loan. Our education loan EMI calculator shows the monthly repayment.
Note the year. A median from three batches ago says little about this year's hiring.
A good MBA decision starts with the role you want in five years and works backwards to the course that gets you there at a cost you can recover. Salary data is one input, and it is useful only when you know which row of it you are likely to land in.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average MBA salary in India?
There is no single national figure. Official medians range from about Rs 29.3 lakh a year at IIM Ahmedabad (audited, Class of 2025) to about Rs 11.5 lakh at a mid-tier PGDM school (NIRF 2025 data, graduating 2023-24). Most colleges sit between and below these.
What is the MBA salary for a fresher?
It depends on the campus. Placed graduates at IIM Ahmedabad and XLRI report medians of Rs 28 lakh to Rs 31 lakh a year in NIRF data, while a mid-tier PGDM school reported about Rs 11.5 lakh. A fresher at a college with no strong recruiter list should plan for a lower start.
Does an MBA from an online university get the same salary?
No audited placement data exists for online MBA cohorts in India, so no official figure can be quoted. A UGC-DEB approved online MBA is valid, and pay usually changes through promotion or a role switch rather than campus hiring.
Is the highest package the same as the average salary?
No. The highest package is a single offer. Use the median from an audited report or NIRF data, and check whether it includes variable pay.
Is MBA salary CTC or in-hand?
Placement figures are annual CTC. Your monthly in-hand pay is lower after deductions, so convert it with the in-hand salary calculator before you plan EMIs or rent.
Which MBA specialisation pays the most?
Pay differs by function and sector, with consulting and finance often at the top of campus offers. Our comparison of MBA specialisations goes through the options in detail.
