Overview
BSc Computer Science is a three-year undergraduate degree, with an optional fourth honours year, covering programming, algorithms, databases and AI after Class 12 with Mathematics. This page covers eligibility, modes, fees at named universities, subjects and jobs.
BSc Computer Science (B.Sc CS) is an undergraduate science degree that teaches how computers and software work, from programming languages and data structures to operating systems, networks, databases and artificial intelligence. You join it after Class 12, usually with Mathematics. Most universities run it as a three-year degree, and many now offer a fourth honours or research year.
The degree is more theory-heavy than a BCA. You spend more time on mathematics, algorithms and the theory of computation, and slightly less on business software and application tools. That makes it a strong base for an MSc, MCA or research, as well as for software jobs. If you are still choosing between science options, our guide on what to do after 12th PCM compares the main routes.
Most universities ask for Class 12 from a recognised board with Mathematics. Some examples from official 2026-27 documents:
Central universities and many state universities admit through the Common University Entrance Test run by the National Testing Agency, so check cuet.nta.nic.in early in the year. Private universities may run their own test or interview, and distance programmes mostly admit on your Class 12 marks.
Both exist. Under the UGC Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes, a three-year bachelor's degree needs 120 credits and a four-year honours degree needs 160 credits. Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia list their B.Sc (Hons) Computer Science as an eight-semester programme, while many other universities still run a six-semester degree. The three-year degree is enough for most jobs and for an MCA or MSc. The fourth year helps if you want research, a PhD route or a deeper specialisation.
Modes to know:
Under Regulation 22 of the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020, a degree earned through distance learning from a recognised institution is treated as equivalent to a campus degree. Before you pay, confirm that the university and this exact programme appear on the UGC-DEB website for your admission session.
Fees range from about ₹15,000 a year at a central university to more than ₹1 lakh a year at a private campus. The figures below come from each university's own 2026-27 documents.
| University | Mode | Published fee |
|---|---|---|
| Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi (B.Sc Hons Computer Science) | Regular (8 semesters) | ₹15,300 per year; ₹50,300 per year for the 10 self-financed seats |
| University of Delhi, School of Open Learning (B.Sc Hons Computer Science) | Distance (ODL) | ₹24,570 for the first year (Category A), including the ₹1,820 examination fee |
| PGDAV College, University of Delhi (B.Sc Hons Computer Science) | Regular | About ₹45,280 for the first year: ₹17,980 standard fee plus ₹22,500 course fee and ₹4,800 computer usage fee |
| Christ University, Bengaluru Central Campus (B.Sc Computer Science, Mathematics) | Regular | ₹95,000 per year for Karnataka students, ₹1,15,000 per year for other states, plus ₹8,000 registration |
Compare the full programme cost, not only the first instalment. Ask about lab fees, exam fees, hostel and any self-financing surcharge, because at PGDAV the course and computer fees more than double the standard first-year amount. Universities revise fees each session, so confirm the current figure in writing before you pay.
The core papers are similar across universities. Delhi University's B.Sc (Hons) Computer Science, for example, follows this sequence of core papers:
Expect a lab with almost every paper, plus electives such as web development, data analytics, cloud computing or cybersecurity. In the Delhi University core papers, the programming languages you learn are Python and C++. Other universities may order the papers differently, so read the official syllabus of every college on your shortlist. You need to be comfortable with Class 12 maths, because discrete maths, probability and algorithms carry real weight.
Graduates commonly start in entry-level roles such as:
Government routes exist too. The SSC Combined Graduate Level Examination 2026 notice lists a Computer Science degree among the accepted qualifications for Statistical Investigator Grade-II, and most other CGL posts accept any bachelor's degree.
We do not quote a single salary figure for this degree, because starting pay varies widely with the employer, the city and your skills. A strong project portfolio, internships and coding practice matter more in your first interview than the name of the degree. Ask each college for its latest placement report with the number of students placed and the median offer, not only the highest one. Many graduates also add an MCA or an MSc to move into specialist roles.
It suits you if you enjoy maths and logic, like building things in code and want the option of higher study or research later. It also suits students who did not clear engineering entrance exams but still want a serious computing foundation.
Look elsewhere if you dislike mathematics or want a more applied, industry-tool focus. A BCA is more applied, and BSc IT leans towards networks, systems and business IT. If you want an engineering degree for core software roles at companies that hire only B.Tech graduates, a B.Tech in Computer Science is the direct route.
If you are still comparing science degrees, our BSc courses list after 12th sets out the other options, and a CareerBhavan counsellor can help you narrow your shortlist.

FAQs
Quick answers to common questions.
Students who have completed 10+2 with Mathematics as a compulsory subject from a recognized board are generally eligible for admission.
Graduates can work as Software Developers, Data Analysts, Cybersecurity Analysts, Web Developers, Cloud Engineers, AI & Machine Learning Associates, and IT Professionals.
Yes. Graduates commonly pursue M.Sc Computer Science, MCA, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, MBA IT, and PhD programs.
B.Sc Computer Science is an undergraduate degree focused on programming, data structures, algorithms, databases, networks, operating systems and artificial intelligence. Most universities run it for three years, and under the UGC credit framework many also offer a fourth honours or research year.
Yes, if you enjoy maths and programming. It leads to roles in software development, testing, data analysis, cloud and network operations and cybersecurity, and to higher study such as an MCA or MSc. Your results depend more on your projects, internships and skills than on the degree name, so choose a college with good labs and a real placement record.
Neither is better for everyone. BSc Computer Science is more theory and maths heavy, with algorithms, discrete maths and theory of computation, so it suits students who want an MSc, research or deep technical roles. BCA is more applied and focuses on application development and business software. Both lead to software jobs and to an MCA.
It can be three or four years. The UGC framework sets 120 credits for a three-year degree and 160 credits for a four-year honours degree. Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia list B.Sc (Hons) Computer Science as an eight-semester programme, while many universities still run a six-semester degree. Check the structure on each university's prospectus.
There is no single figure. Starting pay depends on the employer, the city, the role and the skills you show, such as projects, internships and coding practice. Pay at the top end usually comes after a few years of experience or a postgraduate degree. Ask each college for its latest placement report with the median offer and the number of students placed.
No college or degree can guarantee a job. Your chances improve with strong programming skills, a project portfolio, internships and a college with a genuine placement record. Ask for the latest placement report showing how many students were placed, not only the highest package, and keep a backup plan such as an MCA or MSc.
As of October 2026, we found no university entitled to offer B.Sc Computer Science in online mode on the UGC-DEB programme list. Several universities offer it through open and distance learning, including the University of Delhi's School of Open Learning. Confirm the programme on the UGC-DEB website for your session before you pay.
