Not only the regular training programs for teachers, it sets a benchmark through its conferences, courses, and updated syllabus. This institution was renamed the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) in 1972, with three other languages German, French, and Russian.
In the year 1973, this institution got a status of deemed to be a university and later set up two new campuses of the University at Shillong in 1973 and in Lucknow in 1979. This venturing of the campuses in the new territories helped to cater the education in the areas in North and North-East states. In the year 2006-2007, this institute got the status of Central University (Act of Parliament) and was named English & Foreign Languages University. It gives training to the students in 10 foreign languages viz, Arabic, French, Spanish, Russian, Korean, Chinese, German, Persian, Japanese, and Italian.
