Overview
The full form of BSc IT is Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, a three-year undergraduate degree in programming, databases, networks and security, with a four-year honours option at some universities. This page covers BSc IT course details: eligibility, modes, fees, subjects and careers.
The full form of BSc IT is Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. It is an undergraduate degree in applied computing: programming, databases, web development, networks, operating systems and information security. Most universities run it for three years after Class 12, and some now add a fourth honours year.
The degree is more applied than a BSc Computer Science, which goes deeper into maths and theory. Compared with a BCA, it usually carries more networking, systems and infrastructure work and less business application content.
Eligibility is set by each university, and Mathematics matters more than many students expect. Examples from official documents:
Most colleges admit on Class 12 merit or through their own test. Some universities use CUET (UG) for this course, and their admission notice will say so. Read the notice of each university on your list. Keep your Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, ID proof and category certificates ready.
Under the UGC Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes, a three-year degree needs 120 credits and a four-year honours degree needs 160 credits. Universities can set higher totals. The University of Mumbai's NEP structure is one example. It awards the B.Sc (Information Technology) degree after three years with 132 credits. You can exit earlier with a certificate after one year or a diploma after two. Students who meet its CGPA condition can go on to a four-year B.Sc (Honours) in Information Technology.
A distance degree from a recognised institution counts as equal to a campus degree. That rule is Regulation 22 of the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020. Check that the university and this exact programme appear on the UGC-DEB website for your session. Our guide on how to check UGC-DEB approval shows the steps.
Fees depend heavily on whether the college is aided, unaided or private. The table uses each institution's own published fee schedule.
| Institution | Mode | Published fee |
|---|---|---|
| Sathaye College, Mumbai (University of Mumbai) | Regular | 2025-26 schedule: ₹31,776 for the first year (₹10,950 for SC and ST students), ₹31,356 for the second year and ₹33,106 for the third year |
| St. Xavier's College, Mumbai (University of Mumbai) | Regular | ₹65,000 per year for each of the three years, for the 2026-29 batch |
| Uttaranchal University, Dehradun | Regular | 2026-27: ₹1,09,604 to ₹1,37,956 per year for the All India quota, depending on your Class 12 marks, plus ₹16,000 one-time charges including ₹2,000 refundable caution money |
Look at the full three-year cost, not only the first-year figure. Ask whether exam, lab and project fees are included, and whether the fee changes in later years. Fees are revised every session, so confirm the current amount in writing before you pay.
The University of Mumbai's NEP syllabus is a useful example. In the first year you study programming with C, database management systems, object-oriented programming using C++ and web designing. Each has practicals, and you add minor and skill papers such as office tools for data management. Later semesters typically move on to Python, data structures, Java, software engineering and networking. You also meet advanced web development, information security and newer areas such as AI and data analytics, with a project in the final year.
At Mumbai, each paper is assessed 40% through internal work and 60% through a semester-end exam, and you must pass both parts. Other universities differ, so download the official syllabus of every college on your shortlist. If you are weighing this against a BCA, our BCA subjects guide lets you compare the papers side by side.
Common first roles include:
We do not quote a single salary figure. Starting pay varies a lot with the employer, the city and the skills you can show. For BSc IT graduates, practical skills count most in a first interview. Internships, a project portfolio and certifications in networking, cloud or security usually matter more than the college name. Ask each college for its latest placement report with the number of students placed and the median offer. Many graduates later take an MCA or an MSc IT to move into specialist roles.
It suits you if you like hands-on work with code, networks and systems. It also suits you if you want a practical degree that leads straight into the information technology industry. It is a good fit if you studied Mathematics or Statistics in Class 12 and live near a university that runs strong BSc IT colleges.
Look elsewhere if you want research or deep theory, where a BSc Computer Science fits better. The same applies if you have no Mathematics in Class 12 and your target university requires it. If you are aiming for core engineering roles that ask for a B.Tech, that degree is the direct route.

FAQs
Quick answers to common questions.
B Sc IT is an undergraduate degree in programming, databases, web development, networks and information security, taught through lectures, practicals and a final-year project. You join after Class 12, and many universities, including the University of Mumbai, require Mathematics or Statistics in Class 12. Admission is usually on merit or through a college entrance test.
You need Class 12 from a recognised board, and the subject rule depends on the university. The University of Mumbai asks for at least 45% aggregate (40% for reserved categories) in one attempt with Mathematics and/or Statistics. Uttaranchal University asks for 45% (40% for SC and ST). Some colleges, such as St. Xavier's Mumbai, also hold an entrance test.
Graduates often move into IT support, systems analysis, networking, junior development or cybersecurity support roles. Exact titles depend on skills, internships and the hiring market. Use current published job notices to check the responsibilities, qualifications and selection process before applying.
BSc IT can suit students who enjoy computing, problem solving and practical projects. It provides a foundation for technology roles and further study. Career outcomes depend on your skills, college teaching, portfolio and internships, so compare these factors when choosing a programme.
Yes. Common next steps include M.Sc Information Technology, MCA, and specialised postgraduate study in cybersecurity, data or cloud. Some graduates also choose MBA with an IT focus after work experience. Entry rules differ by programme.
The full form of BSc IT is Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. It is an undergraduate science degree focused on applied computing, information systems and digital infrastructure rather than a single narrow trade skill.
B Sc IT course fees differ by university and study mode. Compare the full amount payable, including tuition, laboratory, examination and other compulsory charges. Ask about instalments, scholarship conditions and refunds. Use the university's current fee notice before making a payment.
The degree usually takes three years across six semesters. Under the UGC credit framework, some universities also offer a fourth honours year. The University of Mumbai, for example, awards the B.Sc (Information Technology) after three years and offers a four-year B.Sc (Honours) in Information Technology to students who meet its CGPA condition.
At the University of Mumbai, the first year covers programming with C, database management systems, object-oriented programming using C++ and web designing, each with practicals. Later semesters typically add Python, data structures, Java, software engineering, networking, information security and a final-year project. Exact papers vary by university, so check each official syllabus.
Distance, yes; online, not on the current list. The UGC-DEB programme list for 2026-27 shows BSc IT in open and distance learning mode at universities such as the University of Mumbai, Karnataka State Open University and Bharathidasan University. As of October 2026 we found no online-mode entitlement for this degree. Check the UGC-DEB website for your session before you pay.
Start with recognition, labs, faculty, internships and fee clarity, not distance alone. Shortlist colleges near you, compare at least three options, and visit if possible. Ask for recent syllabus and assessment details before you decide.
Typical steps include application, document upload, merit or entrance shortlisting, counselling where required, fee payment and enrolment. Keep board mark sheets and ID documents ready. Check each university's official notice for current deadlines, subject requirements and available admission rounds.
There is no fixed monthly figure. Starting pay depends on the employer, the city, the role and the skills you can show, such as projects, internships and certifications. The highest salaries usually come after several years of experience or a postgraduate degree, not straight after graduation. Ask each college for its latest placement report with the median offer and the number of students placed.
Both lead to IT jobs and to an MCA. BSc IT is a science degree with more networking, systems and security work, and many universities ask for Mathematics or Statistics in Class 12. BCA leans towards software and application development and is often open to students from any stream. Pick the one whose syllabus matches the work you want to do.
Usually some, and often as an entry rule. The University of Mumbai requires Mathematics and/or Statistics in Class 12 for BSc IT. Inside the degree, the maths is applied, used in programming, data structures and data analysis, rather than pure theory. If you have no maths in Class 12, check the eligibility rule of each university before applying.
The best job is the one that fits your strongest skills. Students who enjoy coding often start as software or web developers or testers. Those who like systems and networks move into network, system or cloud support roles, and those who like data become data or business analysts. Security analyst roles suit students who build networking and security skills.
Yes, as long as you keep your skills current. Organisations of every kind need people to build, run and secure software, networks and data systems. The degree gives you that base, and the four-year honours option, an MCA or an MSc IT can take you further. What matters most is what you can do: projects, internships and up-to-date tools.
