BCA course details in short: BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications) is a three-year undergraduate degree in computing, with a four-year honours option under the NEP framework. You need 10+2, though some universities also ask for maths. Subjects cover programming, databases, networks and web development, and since 2024-25 colleges need AICTE approval to run it.
Last updated: October 2026. Details are drawn from UGC's degree list and credit framework, the AICTE Approval Process Handbook 2024-27, and IGNOU's BCA programme guide.

BCA course subjects, semester by semester
Every university sets its own syllabus, but the core is similar. Here is IGNOU's current BCA structure (23 theory courses, 8 practical courses and a project) as an official example:
Semester 1: Computer Basics and PC Software, Basic Mathematics, Environmental Studies, English at Work Place
Semester 2: Computer Organisation, Operating Systems, Programming in C and Python, Windows and Linux Lab
Semester 3: Data Structures and Algorithms, Database Management Systems, Programming in C++, Statistical Techniques
Semester 4: Object Oriented Programming using Java, Web Programming, Fundamentals of Computer Networks, Financial Accounting
Semester 5: Software Engineering, Algorithm Design, E-Commerce, Cyber Security, Data Analysis
Semester 6: Entrepreneurship, Digital Forensics and a 12-credit project
Notice that maths turns up in the first semester even at universities that do not ask for it at admission. If you did not take maths in Class 12, spend a few weeks on basic algebra and statistics before you start. You can read the full structure on IGNOU's BCA programme page.
BCA eligibility: is maths required?
It depends on the university. AICTE's handbook leaves the subject rule to each affiliating university's admission policy, so you will see three kinds of rules:
No subject condition: IGNOU accepts 10+2 or its equivalent from any stream, or a Diploma in Commercial Practice.
Maths or a computer subject: the University of Lucknow asks for Mathematics, Computer Science or Computer Application in Class 12, with 50% marks (45% for SC/ST).
Maths compulsory: some private universities, such as B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute in Chennai, require maths as a core Class 12 subject along with 50% aggregate.
So arts and commerce students without maths can do BCA, but only at universities whose rules allow it. Check the eligibility line on the university's own admission page, not on a third-party list.
3-year BCA or 4-year BCA Honours?
Under UGC's Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes, you earn the BCA degree after three years and 120 credits. A fourth year takes you to 160 credits and a BCA (Honours). Students who score 75% or more in the first six semesters can opt for Honours with Research, which includes a 12-credit research project. You can also exit early with a certificate after one year or a diploma after two.
The fourth year has one practical benefit: AICTE allows four-year BCA graduates lateral entry into the second year of MCA where seats are available. Our guide to MCA eligibility explains that route.
What changed with AICTE approval
From the 2024-25 academic year, AICTE brought BCA, BBA and BMS programmes run by general degree colleges under its approval process. AICTE has said this does not change the affiliating university or its examination system. For 2026-27, AICTE's approval letters to colleges say BCA approvals are on an 'as is where is' basis, with its full norms to apply from the following year.
What this means for you: if you are joining a private college affiliated to a state university, ask the college to show its AICTE approval for your admission year. It takes one minute and protects you later.
Online BCA: is it valid?
Yes, from a university recognised by UGC for online mode in your session. The UGC Open and Distance Learning and Online Programmes Regulations 2020 treat these degrees as equivalent to campus degrees. They bar online programmes with lab work, except where the practical part is limited to programming and coding, which is why online BCA is permitted. Our article on the online BCA course covers fees and how to check a university, and the online BCA page lists current programmes.
Is BCA a good course?
BCA is a good course if you enjoy building software and will work on skills outside the syllabus: a GitHub portfolio, internships and one specialisation such as web development, data or cloud. Demand exists. NASSCOM's Strategic Review 2025 estimated India's tech workforce at about 5.8 million in FY2025, with roughly 126,000 net new jobs that year. Employers hire for skills, though, and a BCA with no projects competes poorly.
Choose BCA if you want an affordable route into software jobs, plan an MCA later, or need a flexible online degree while working.
Look elsewhere if you want core engineering roles, government engineering posts or campus placements that ask specifically for B.Tech. Our BCA vs B.Tech comparison goes through those trade-offs.
What to do after BCA
Most graduates either start work as junior developers, support engineers, testers or analysts, or study further. The common next steps are MCA, M.Sc Computer Science, an MBA for those moving towards product or business roles, or a focused certification in cloud or data. If you already know you want MCA, an integrated BCA plus MCA programme saves the second admission round. Whichever path you pick, use these BCA course details as a checklist when you compare universities: eligibility, duration, recognition for the mode, and fees.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do BCA without maths?
Yes, at universities that accept 10+2 from any stream, such as IGNOU. Many others ask for maths or a computer subject in Class 12, so check each university's eligibility before applying.
Is BCA a 3-year or 4-year course?
Both exist. The BCA degree takes three years and 120 credits. Under the NEP credit framework, a fourth year leads to BCA Honours with 160 credits.
What is the IGNOU BCA fee?
IGNOU lists Rs 8,300 per semester and Rs 49,800 for all six semesters, as of 2026, plus registration and exam fees. Fees change each intake, so confirm on IGNOU's site before paying.
Is an online BCA degree valid for jobs?
An online BCA from a UGC-recognised university is legally equivalent to a regular BCA. Employers will still look at your skills and projects, so build a portfolio alongside the degree.
