Overview
BSc Cardiovascular Technology, also called Cardiac Care Technology, is a four-year allied health degree in ECG, echocardiography and cath lab work, with a one-year hospital internship. Regular, on-campus study only.
BSc Cardiovascular Technology is a four-year allied health degree that trains you to run the tests cardiologists rely on: ECG, Holter and stress tests, echocardiography, and the equipment in the cardiac catheterisation lab. You work under a cardiologist's direction as a technologist, not as a doctor. The course is three years of theory, practicals and hospital clinics, followed by a one-year internship in a working cardiology department.
Universities use several names for the same field. Manipal and Amrita call it B.Sc Cardiovascular Technology (CVT), PES University calls it B.Sc (Hons) Cardiac Care Technology, JKKN in Tamil Nadu offers B.Sc Cardiac Technology, and JIPMER lists Cardiac Laboratory Technology. Compare the syllabus and internship, not the title. This page covers who regulates the field, eligibility, fees as of October 2026, subjects, careers and the BSc cardiac care technology salary picture.
Cardiovascular technology is one of the allied and healthcare professions regulated under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) Act, 2021. The Commission's Allied and Healthcare Professionals registry lists 56 professions from the Act's Schedule, including Cardiovascular Technologists, Perfusionists, and ECG and Echocardiogram Technologists, in its Medical Technologists and Physician Associate group. Professionals in these fields enrol on that registry. When you shortlist colleges, prefer a university degree with a proper teaching hospital.
You need Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and English. Beyond that, rules vary by institution:
Some private colleges admit on Class 12 marks, sometimes with an interview. Government seats are usually filled through state counselling, so watch your state's allied health or paramedical admission notice.
Plan for four years in all. JIPMER states that its allied health B.Sc courses are four years full time, with three years of theory and practicals and one year of compulsory internship, and Manipal's 2024 syllabus spreads its BSc CVT across eight semesters with the internship in the last two. Only regular, on-campus study is valid. The UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020 list paramedical disciplines among programmes that cannot be offered through distance or online mode, and you cannot learn cath lab or echo work without patients and machines in front of you.
The gap between a government seat and a private seat is very large in this course. The figures below come from each institution's own prospectus or fee page.
| Institution | Type and programme | Published fee | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| JIPMER, Puducherry | Central government institute; B.Sc Cardiac Laboratory Technology (5 seats) | ₹11,410 payable at admission for 2026-27, including ₹1,200 annual tuition and a ₹3,000 refundable caution deposit | B.Sc prospectus 2026-27, jipmer.edu.in |
| Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Faridabad campus | Deemed university; B.Sc Cardio Vascular Technology | ₹1,32,000 annual tuition for 2026; ₹1,71,400 total in the first year, plus ₹5,000 refundable caution deposit | Programme page, amrita.edu |
| JKKN College of Allied Health Sciences, Namakkal | Private college; B.Sc Cardiac Technology, management quota | ₹1,70,000 a year, ₹6,80,000 for four years (2026-27); government quota fees as per Tamil Nadu norms | Fee structure 2026-27, ahs.jkkn.ac.in |
| PES University, Bengaluru | Private university; B.Sc (Hons) Cardiac Care Technology | ₹2,80,000 a year (PESU merit fee) plus ₹10,000 one-time charges, in the fee details published for 2027-28 | Fee details page, pes.edu |
Hostel and mess are usually charged separately. Fees change every year, so confirm the current figure with the institution before you pay anything.
The first year builds the base in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and cardiac anatomy, with ECG from the first semester. The middle years add microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, ultrasound physics, stress testing, cardiac instruments and congenital heart disease. The final years go deep into echocardiography, cardiac catheterisation and interventions, pacemakers and other implantable devices, and life support. Manipal College of Health Professions' 2024 outcome-based syllabus is a clear example of how this is laid out.
| Year | Main subjects |
|---|---|
| Year 1 | Anatomy; Physiology; Biochemistry; Cardiac Anatomy and Physiology; Basic ECG; Advanced ECG and Holter Monitoring; Cardiac Embryology; Medical Ethics; Clinics |
| Year 2 | Microbiology; Pathology; Pharmacology; Ultrasound Physics and Doppler Principles; Cardiac Stress Tests; Cardiac Instrumentations; Basics of Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices; Congenital Heart Disease I; Biostatistics and Research Methodology; Clinics |
| Year 3 | Basics in Cardiac Cath and Hardwares; Valvular Heart Disease; Congenital Heart Disease II; Applications of Echocardiography; Cardiac Cath and Interventions; General Cardiac Examination and BLS-ACLS; Clinics |
| Year 4 | Two six-month internship blocks of 48 hours a week |
Graduates work as cardiovascular or cardiac care technologists in hospital cardiology departments: ECG and Holter, treadmill and stress testing, echocardiography, and the cath lab. Some move into pacemaker and device clinics, cardiac ICU support, or application and service roles with companies that make cardiac equipment. With experience and further study, such as an M.Sc in the field, you can take on senior technologist, training or research roles.
On B Sc cardiac technology salary, be careful with figures you see online. Pay depends on the hospital, the city, your specialisation (echo and cath lab work are more specialised than routine ECG) and whether the post is in a government or private hospital. Government posts pay on scales set out in each recruitment notice. No college can promise a salary, so ask each one for its placement record and where its interns were absorbed.
BSc Cardiovascular Technology suits you if you enjoy biology and physics, like working with machines, and stay steady around patients who may be very ill. Expect shift work, emergency calls and long hours on your feet in the cath lab.
Look elsewhere if you do not want direct patient contact. A B.Sc in Medical Laboratory Technology keeps you in the lab, and B.Sc Medical Imaging Technology or B.Sc Dialysis Technology may suit you if you like a different set of machines. If you want to care for patients across all wards, read our BSc Nursing course guide.
Start with the hospital. Ask how many cath lab procedures and echo studies the attached hospital runs each week, and how many hours you will spend in clinics in each semester. Check that the degree is awarded by a recognised university, that the internship is inside the course, and that the hospital has a full cardiology department rather than a small ECG room. Compare the total four-year fee with hostel and mess. Look at government options first, through JIPMER and your state's counselling, then compare private seats. Our list of BSc courses after 12th helps if you are still choosing between science routes, and a counsellor can help you shortlist BSc Cardiovascular Technology colleges that match your marks and budget.

FAQs
Quick answers to common questions.
It is an undergraduate allied health degree focused on supporting cardiac investigations and patient monitoring. Students combine classroom study with supervised clinical practice. The qualification prepares technologists to work within a healthcare team, with duties determined by their training, employer requirements and workplace protocols.
A common structure is three academic years followed by a one-year clinical internship. Institutions may describe the duration differently, so check whether the published total includes hospital training. Read the university's curriculum and internship requirements before comparing programmes.
Applicants usually need 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. English, minimum marks and age requirements depend on the institution. Selection may involve merit, an entrance process or counselling. Follow the current prospectus rather than assuming that all colleges use the same criteria.
It may suit science students interested in diagnostic equipment, careful record keeping and working with patients in a clinical team. Consider practical attendance, hospital postings and shift-based work before choosing the degree. Compare the course's training arrangements with your interests and career goals.
Possible routes include cardiac technologist, ECG technician and catheterisation laboratory support roles, subject to employer requirements. Some graduates pursue equipment-related work or relevant postgraduate study. Clinical responsibilities depend on competence and supervision, and specialised roles may need further training or experience.
Pay depends on the hospital, the city, whether the post is government or private, and your specialisation, since echo and cath lab work are more specialised than routine ECG. Shift duties and allowances also change an offer. Government posts follow the pay scale stated in each recruitment notice. Compare written terms, and do not treat any course salary claim as a guaranteed outcome.
Ask whether a quoted monthly amount is gross salary or take-home pay. Review fixed pay, allowances, incentives and deductions separately. Check whether internship payments or probation pay differ from regular employment. Use the written offer to compare packages rather than dividing an advertised annual figure alone.
This clinical programme requires practical attendance and supervised hospital training. UGC-DEB rules prohibit medical and allied paramedical disciplines through online or distance mode. An online application, video lecture or digital study resource does not replace the regular clinical programme and its practical requirements.
Verify the campus, exact award and hospital training arrangements through official programme pages. PES University lists BSc (Hons) Cardiac Care Technology at its Electronic City campus. Its honours qualification should be compared using its own curriculum and current admission rules rather than treated as an identical award.
Check current official programme lists and state counselling notices for the exact qualification. Confirm ownership, affiliation, intake and clinical training arrangements before applying. A government quota seat may be available in a private institution, so the admission category alone does not confirm that a college is government owned.
It depends on the institution. JIPMER's 2026-27 prospectus requires a NEET (UG) 2026 qualification for all its B.Sc allied health courses, including Cardiac Laboratory Technology. Amrita uses its own entrance exam, AEEL, and PES University uses the PES entrance process. Some private colleges admit on Class 12 marks. Check the admission notice of each college.
They cover the same field under different names. Manipal and Amrita use B.Sc Cardiovascular Technology, PES University uses B.Sc (Hons) Cardiac Care Technology, and JIPMER uses Cardiac Laboratory Technology. All train you in ECG, echo and cath lab work with a one-year internship. Compare the syllabus and hospital training rather than the title.
The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions, set up under the NCAHP Act, 2021. Its Allied and Healthcare Professionals registry lists 56 professions from the Act's Schedule, including Cardiovascular Technologists and ECG and Echocardiogram Technologists, and professionals in these fields enrol on that registry.
At JIPMER, a central government institute, the cost is very low. Its 2026-27 prospectus lists ₹11,410 payable at admission, including ₹1,200 annual tuition and a ₹3,000 refundable caution deposit, for its B.Sc courses, which include Cardiac Laboratory Technology. Private seats at the colleges we checked cost ₹1.3 lakh to ₹2.8 lakh a year, as of October 2026.
In Manipal College of Health Professions' 2024 syllabus, year one covers Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Cardiac Anatomy and Physiology, Basic ECG, Advanced ECG and Holter Monitoring, Cardiac Embryology, Medical Ethics and Legal Aspects, and hospital clinics. Other universities use different paper names, so read your own university's syllabus.
