Overview
A BPharm degree is a four-year Bachelor of Pharmacy with laboratory and practical learning. Check PCI course approval, admission rules and State Pharmacy Council registration requirements.
Here are the B Pharmacy course details in brief. A BPharm degree is the Bachelor of Pharmacy, an undergraduate qualification in pharmaceutical sciences. The regular course lasts four academic years, organised into eight semesters. It combines classroom study with laboratory work and practical learning. Students learn how medicines are developed, formulated, tested and used safely.
The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) sets the course rules and approves institutions. This degree suits students who enjoy chemistry, biology and careful laboratory work. It can support entry into pharmaceutical manufacturing, quality assurance, research support and pharmacy practice. A pharmacy qualification does not authorise independent medical diagnosis or prescribing. Professional practice and recruitment have their own requirements.
PCI's BPharm rules require the relevant 10+2 qualification with English, Physics and Chemistry, plus Mathematics or Biology. Check the admitting authority's current rules for minimum marks, entrance tests, counselling and category requirements. Do not assume one entrance examination applies to every college.
Students with a DPharm from a PCI-approved institution may apply through the prescribed lateral entry route into the third semester. That route covers six semesters over three academic years. Admission remains subject to the applicable selection process and available approved seats. Our Diploma in Pharmacy page explains that first step.
The standard course is four years; the prescribed lateral entry route is three years. Compare the correct route when reviewing a college's fee notice. Fees vary a lot between institutions, as the two published schedules below show.
| Institution | Route | Published fee |
|---|---|---|
| Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi (School of Pharmaceutical Education and Research) | 4 years | 2025-26 schedule, the latest published: ₹1,60,000 a year for general seats and ₹2,40,000 a year for self-financed seats. One-time, exam and e-governance fees are extra, and you can pay half the annual fee each semester. |
| Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, MAHE, Manipal | 4 years | 2026-27 batch: first instalment of ₹4,17,000 (₹2,50,000 tuition and ₹1,57,000 other fees) and ₹16,38,000 for the full course, plus a ₹10,000 refundable caution deposit |
| Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, MAHE, Manipal | Lateral entry, 3 years | 2026-27 batch: first instalment of ₹3,95,000 and ₹11,65,000 for the full course, plus the ₹10,000 caution deposit |
Read the current written schedule for your admission category and batch. Separate tuition from deposits, hostel charges, examination payments and other listed items. Check the full payment schedule and refund policy before accepting a seat. MAHE publishes category-specific course schedules and online payment terms on its official fees page. This is a source to check, rather than a promise of the same payment terms at every college.
The subject overview below covers the main pharmaceutical sciences. PCI has published a 2026 curriculum with revised course organisation and digital topics. Ask your university which approved syllabus applies to your cohort. A generic subject list should not replace its semester timetable or examination scheme. For a semester-wise view, see our B Pharm syllabus guide.
Practical learning develops accurate measurement, laboratory safety, record keeping and evidence-based communication. Review the college's laboratory facilities, teaching staff and arrangements for required practical training. Check how projects and assessments are supervised.
Check PCI approval for the exact institution and BPharm course, including the relevant admission year and intake. For registration, check the qualification and institution's status under section 12 of the Pharmacy Act. An approval claim for a different course is not enough.
Pharmacist registration is handled by the State Pharmacy Council. Completing the degree does not automatically place your name on its register. Confirm its application, document and statutory requirements. UGC lists pharmacy among disciplines prohibited through online or distance mode, so this page concerns regular study.
Career opportunities fall into a few clear groups. Check the employer's qualifications for each role.
Pharmacovigilance has a national structure in India. The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission runs the National Coordination Centre of the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India, which works through adverse drug reaction monitoring centres in medical colleges. Drug inspector appointments require the applicable recruitment conditions; the degree alone does not guarantee eligibility or selection.
BPharm and PharmD are separate qualifications. The standard PharmD route after 10+2 lasts six years and has its own clinical training requirements. Do not confuse it with the four-year BPharm or the separate PharmD post-baccalaureate route. Our PharmD course details guide explains both routes.
For higher studies, many graduates take an MPharm. The Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT) is the national test linked to MPharm admission. NBEMS held GPAT 2026 on 7 March 2026, and a GPAT 2026 score stays valid for three years, as its information bulletin states. A GPAT score does not by itself give you a seat or a scholarship. Admitting institutions run their own counselling, so review the specific entry criteria for MPharm or other relevant programmes.
Choose a college through approval, teaching, practical facilities and the published admission process, then retain copies of your offer and payment receipts.

Quick answers to common questions.
A BPharm degree is the Bachelor of Pharmacy, an undergraduate qualification in pharmaceutical sciences. The standard course runs for four years with laboratory and practical learning. It covers medicine formulation, analysis, pharmacology and pharmacy practice. Registration and job selection remain separate processes.
The prescribed route requires the relevant 10+2 qualification with English, Physics and Chemistry, plus Mathematics or Biology. Check the admitting authority's current minimum marks, equivalence and selection rules. Obtain clarification before applying if your school qualification does not match the published requirements.
The standard route lasts four years across eight semesters. The prescribed DPharm lateral entry route lasts three years. Check the college's written fee schedule for the correct route, category and batch. Review tuition, deposits, other listed charges, payment dates and refund terms before accepting a seat.
Follow the current process published by the admitting authority for your chosen institution. It may require an entrance examination, merit selection or counselling. Check application dates, required subjects, category documents and seat-allotment rules. Do not assume one examination is compulsory for every BPharm college.
The prescribed route allows a DPharm qualification from a PCI-approved institution for admission into the third semester. Check the current selection rules and availability of approved seats. Confirm the institution's approval and any additional curriculum requirements before accepting a lateral entry offer.
It covers pharmaceutical sciences through theory, laboratory work and practical learning. Key areas include pharmaceutics, chemistry, analysis, pharmacology and pharmacognosy. PCI has published a revised 2026 curriculum. Obtain your university's approved syllabus to confirm the course organisation for your admission cohort.
UGC lists pharmacy among disciplines prohibited through online and distance modes. BPharm involves laboratory work and practical requirements, so choose an approved regular programme. An online application portal or digital learning materials do not change the approved delivery mode of the degree.
No. Apply to the relevant State Pharmacy Council and meet its requirements. Check that your qualification and institution have the required PCI approval for registration purposes. Keep the council's document checklist and registration procedures separate from your college's graduation requirements.
BPharm is a four-year undergraduate pharmacy degree. The standard PharmD course after 10+2 lasts six years and has different clinical training requirements. PharmD post-baccalaureate is another separate route. Compare the exact award and curriculum rather than treating these qualifications as interchangeable.
Possible areas include registered pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical production, quality assurance, regulatory support and clinical research support. Employers can require additional training or experience. Check specific recruitment rules for regulated or government roles such as drug inspector; the degree does not guarantee selection.
Check PCI approval for the exact course, intake and admission year. Review laboratories, teaching, practical training and the university's syllabus. Read the written admission and payment rules. If you intend to practise as a pharmacist, check the relevant State Pharmacy Council's registration requirements as well.
They vary widely. Jamia Hamdard's latest published schedule (2025-26) lists ₹1,60,000 a year for general B.Pharm seats and ₹2,40,000 for self-financed seats, with one-time and exam fees extra. Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences lists ₹16,38,000 for the full 2026-27 B.Pharm batch, plus a ₹10,000 refundable caution deposit. Confirm the current fee in writing before you pay.
Often, yes. GPAT is the national Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test that NBEMS conducts, and it is linked to MPharm admission and scholarships. GPAT 2026 was held on 7 March 2026, and the score stays valid for three years. A score does not guarantee a seat, because each admitting institution runs its own counselling, so check its rules.
