MCA eligibility in India is a bachelor's degree in any stream with at least 50% marks (45% for reserved categories), preferably with Mathematics. Under AICTE norms, a student without maths can still join a regular MCA after a compulsory bridge course, but most online, distance and NIT seats ask for maths at 10+2 or graduation.
Last updated: October 2026. The rules below come from the AICTE Approval Process Handbook 2024-27, the NIMCET 2026 information brochure and IGNOU's July 2026 common prospectus.
MCA course details: what the degree is
MCA stands for Master of Computer Applications. It is a postgraduate degree in software development, databases, networks and newer areas like cloud, data science and machine learning. AICTE has listed MCA as a two-year programme since the 2020-21 academic year. It used to run for three years, which is why older guides and relatives still quote three.
Most universities split the two years into four semesters. As one official example, IGNOU's MCA (the MCA_NEW programme, 80 credits) covers these papers:
Semester 1: Design and Analysis of Algorithms, Discrete Mathematics, Software Engineering, Professional Skills and Ethics, Security and Cyber Laws
Semester 2: Data Communication and Computer Networks, Object Oriented Analysis and Design, Web Technologies, Data Warehousing and Data Mining
Semester 3: AI and Machine Learning, Accountancy and Financial Management, Data Science and Big Data, Cloud Computing and IoT
Semester 4: Digital Image Processing and Computer Vision, Mobile Computing, and a 12-credit project
Other universities name their papers differently, but the core of programming, data structures, databases, networks and a final project is common. Specialised versions such as an MCA in Data Science add electives on top of that core.
MCA eligibility under the AICTE rule
AICTE sets the national minimum for MCA in regular mode. Its current handbook asks for:
A bachelor's degree in any discipline, for example B.E., B.Tech, B.Sc, B.Com, B.A., B.Voc or BCA
At least 50% marks in that degree, or 45% for candidates from reserved categories
Mathematics preferred; students with no maths background must clear a compulsory bridge course set by the university
Lateral entry into the second year for B.Tech or B.E. (CSE/IT) graduates and four-year BCA graduates, if seats are available
This is a floor, not a ceiling. A university can ask for more, such as maths at graduation level or a higher percentage, so always read the admission rules of the exact university you are applying to. The full text is in the AICTE Approval Process Handbook.
Can you do MCA without maths?
Yes, in some routes, and this is where most students get confused. The answer depends on the mode of study and the institution.
Regular (campus) MCA under AICTE: possible. Maths is preferred, and students without it take a bridge course.
Online and distance MCA: usually not. AICTE leaves entry rules for these modes to UGC norms, and universities generally ask for Mathematics at 10+2 or at graduation level. IGNOU, for example, states plainly that students without maths at 10+2 or graduation are not eligible for its distance or online MCA.
NIT seats through NIMCET: no. You need a three-year degree with Mathematics or Statistics, or a B.E./B.Tech.
A practical tip: if you did not study maths in Class 12 or in college, get the eligibility confirmed in writing by the university before paying any fee. Bridge-course rules vary a lot between universities.
MCA eligibility for B.Com students
A B.Com graduate who studied Mathematics in Class 12 meets the IGNOU and most online MCA requirements, provided the marks threshold is met. If maths was not part of your Class 12 or degree, look for a regular MCA that offers a bridge course. Business Mathematics or Statistics papers in B.Com may count at some universities and not at others, so check the wording.
MCA eligibility for B.A. students
The same logic applies. A B.A. with Mathematics (or maths in Class 12) opens most routes. A B.A. without any maths is limited to universities that run a bridge course in regular mode.
BCA, B.Sc Computer Science and B.Tech graduates
You are eligible almost everywhere. If you hold a four-year BCA or a B.Tech in CSE or IT, ask about lateral entry into the second year, which saves a full year. If you are still planning your undergraduate degree, our guide to the online BCA course and the integrated BCA + MCA route are worth a look.
NIMCET: the MCA entrance test for NITs
NIMCET is the national test for MCA admission at the National Institutes of Technology. Key details from the official NIMCET 2026 brochure:
Covers 13 institutes: 11 NITs (including Tiruchirappalli, Warangal, Allahabad and Delhi) and IIITs at Bhopal and Vadodara, with about 1,300 seats in total
Coordinated in 2026 by NIT Tiruchirappalli; the 2026 test was held on 6 June 2026
Eligibility: at least 60% aggregate or 6.5 CGPA (55% or 6.0 for SC/ST/PwD) in a three-year degree with Mathematics or Statistics, or a B.E./B.Tech; final-year students can apply
Paper: 120 multiple-choice questions for 1,000 marks with 25% negative marking; Mathematics alone carries 50 questions and 600 marks
Check dates for the next cycle on the official NIMCET website. Outside the NITs, universities either run their own entrance test or admit on graduation marks, and many online MCA programmes admit without an entrance exam.
MCA course duration and fees
A regular MCA takes two years. Distance programmes allow more time: IGNOU's MCA runs for a minimum of two and a maximum of four years. Two official fee anchors, as of 2026:
IGNOU MCA (distance): Rs 13,000 per semester, Rs 52,000 for the full programme, plus a Rs 300 registration fee. Students admitted through the bridge-course category pay Rs 1,000 for each of the two bridge courses.
NITs through NIMCET: tuition of Rs 35,000 per semester at most NITs in the 2026 brochure, with higher fees for self-financing seats at a few institutes. Hostel and other charges are extra.
Private and online MCA fees vary widely by university. Fees change each intake, so confirm the current figure on the university's admission page before paying. You can compare current options on our online MCA and distance MCA pages.
Is an online or distance MCA valid?
Yes, if the university is recognised by UGC for that mode and session. The UGC Open and Distance Learning and Online Programmes Regulations 2020 treat these degrees as equivalent to campus degrees. MCA is not on UGC's list of programmes barred from online mode, and online programmes are allowed where the practical work is limited to programming and coding, which fits MCA. Before you enrol, find the university and the programme on the UGC-DEB list for your admission session.
Which MCA route suits you
Strong in maths and want a campus with placements: prepare for NIMCET and state or university entrance tests.
Working full time and need flexibility: an online MCA from a UGC-entitled university with scheduled live classes.
Tight budget and comfortable studying alone: IGNOU's distance MCA, if you have maths in Class 12 or graduation.
No maths background: a regular MCA with a bridge course, after written confirmation of eligibility.
Unsure whether you even want a tech master's: read our MCA vs MBA comparison first.
Frequently asked questions
Is MCA a 2-year or 3-year course?
MCA is a two-year course. AICTE lists it as two years from the 2020-21 academic year. Earlier batches studied a three-year MCA, which is why you may still see both durations quoted online.
Can a B.Com student do MCA?
Yes. A B.Com graduate with at least 50% marks is eligible under AICTE norms. If you studied maths in Class 12, most online and distance programmes accept you too. Without maths, look for a regular MCA with a bridge course.
Is maths compulsory for MCA?
Not under the AICTE minimum for regular mode, where maths is preferred and a bridge course covers the gap. It is effectively compulsory for NIMCET, IGNOU and most online MCAs, which ask for maths at 10+2 or graduation.
Is NIMCET compulsory for MCA admission?
No. NIMCET is needed only for MCA seats at the participating NITs and IIITs. Other universities use their own tests or graduation marks, and many online MCA programmes have no entrance exam.
