Where this comes from

Every rank, score and parameter score is copied from the ranking tables the Ministry of Education publishes on nirfindia.org(opens in a new tab), one table per category per year from 2016 to 2025. We match an institution across years and categories by its NIRF institute ID; for 2016 and 2017, when NIRF used older IDs, by name within the same state.

We publish NIRF’s figures as published, including ties, bands and withdrawn ranks, and do not correct them. Check the institution’s data PDF linked in each row for the numbers behind its score.

FAQ

Questions students ask

What is NIRF ranking?

The National Institutional Ranking Framework is the Ministry of Education’s ranking of Indian higher education institutions, launched on 29 September 2015. Institutions submit their own data, and NIRF scores them on five parameter groups: teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception. The first rankings came out in 2016.

Which is the No. 1 institute in India as per NIRF 2025?

Indian Institute of Technology Madras is first in the NIRF 2025 overall ranking, followed by Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Each category has its own list, so the top engineering, management or medical institution can differ.

When will NIRF 2026 be released?

NIRF had not published its 2026 rankings when we last checked, on 13 October 2026. The Ministry announces the date itself. This page and every category page update with the new ranks the day they appear on nirfindia.org.

How many categories does NIRF rank?

NIRF 2025 has 17 categories. It started in 2016 with four (universities, engineering, management and pharmacy) and has added categories such as medical, law, dental, research, agriculture, innovation and open universities since.

Should I choose a college by its NIRF rank?

Use it as one input. A rank sums up research, teaching and outcomes for the whole institution, so look at the trend over several years, the parameter that matters to you (graduation outcomes for placements, for example) and the programme’s own fees and eligibility. Many good colleges do not take part in NIRF at all.

A rank is one input. A counsellor can match ranked colleges to your marks, budget and goals.
