Savitribai Phule Pune University was established on 10 February 1949 under the Poona University Act in the northwestern part of Pune city. It is one of the premier universities in India and houses 46 academic departments. With about 307 recognized research institutes and 612 affiliated colleges offering graduate and undergraduate courses, the university is famous as the “Oxford of the East.” With a team of 293 teachers, Savitribai Phule Pune University attracts many foreign students due to its excellent teaching facilities. The university even offers different scholarships to national and international students on different parameters. The university has even achieved a global reputation in conducting seminars and conferences for students that prepare them for the current industry needs. The university is UGC-recognized and is accredited by the NAAC with an A+ grade (CGPA 3.60). Savitribai Phule Pune University ranked #541-550 in the QS World University Rankings 2023. The university also ranked in the 601–800 band in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023. It also secured a place in the 201-250 band in Asia and in the 201-250 band among Emerging Economies University Rankings 2022. The university has also been placed at 2nd place in India as per the Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2019. As per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, the university ranked 37th in the overall category and 23rd among the university category. Savitribai Phule Pune University established its School of Open Learning (SoL) in 2018. This SOL of the university offers Undergraduate/Postgraduate Degree courses in the fields of Arts and Commerce. Being a prestigious university in Maharashtra, Savitribai Phule Pune University uses both Marathi and English as the medium of instruction. The university has also established the Centre for Internal Quality Assurance (CIQA) to ensure that the quality of education is not compromised while delivering it in online and distance learning modes.
