About Rabindra Bharati University distance education
Rabindra Bharati University distance education runs through the university's Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE) in Kolkata. It offers MA programmes in open and distance learning (ODL) mode. As of October 2026, five of them are on the UGC Distance Education Bureau (DEB) list of recognised ODL programmes for 2026-27. These are the MA in Education, English, Geography, Political Science and History, recognised up to the January 2027 session.
The university
Rabindra Bharati University was founded on 8 May 1962 under the Rabindra Bharati Act of West Bengal. It marked the birth centenary of Rabindranath Tagore and began at his residential house in Kolkata. Its work follows Tagore's vision of visual arts, performing arts, humanities and social sciences. The university has three campuses: B.T. Road, Jorasanko and Salt Lake.
How the CDOE works
The CDOE was set up in July 2002. It was earlier called the Directorate of Distance Education. Its aim is to reach learners in remote parts of West Bengal. The university's territorial jurisdiction is the whole of West Bengal. If you live outside the state, ask the CDOE if you can enrol before you pay.
The CDOE website lists syllabi for these MA subjects: Bengali, Education, English, Environmental Studies, Geography, History, Political Science, Rabindra Sangeet, Sanskrit and Vocal Music. It also lists a Master of Social Work. Only the five MAs named above are on the DEB list for 2026-27. Check that your subject is recognised for your session before you apply.
Accreditation
NAAC gave the university four-star status in 2001. In February 2016 it was reaccredited with Grade A and a CGPA of 3.10, as stated on the CDOE website.
Admission and contact
Admission to MA Semester I is online. The CDOE posts a fresh admission notice for each session, and its latest notice was for the January 2026 session. Keep your ABC ID and DEB ID ready, as UGC requires both for ODL admission.
