Kakatiya University is situated in Warangal, the erstwhile seat of the Kakatiya rulers, and was established in 1976. Kakatiya University was formerly the Post-Graduate Centre of Osmania University and later on, it was renamed and upgraded. The online and distance learning platform of Kakatiya University was established in 1988, as a wing of Kakatiya University and named The School of Distance Learning & Continuing Education (SDLCE).
