What B.Sc Hotel Management is

B.Sc Hotel Management is a three-year, full-time degree that trains you to run the four core departments of a hotel: food production, food and beverage service, front office and housekeeping. In India the best-known version is the B.Sc in Hospitality and Hotel Administration (B.Sc HHA), taught at the Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs) under the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT), with the degree awarded by Jawaharlal Nehru University. Private universities run their own versions under names such as B.Sc Hotel Management or B.Sc Hotel and Hospitality Management.

Most students open this page with one question: what are the hotel management course fees, and which college is worth them? The short answer, as of October 2026, is that a three-year B.Sc at an IHM charging the standard NCHMCT fee costs about ₹3.4 lakh to ₹3.5 lakh in total. Eligibility and admission

The eligibility criteria depend on the route. For the IHM route, NCHMCT asks for a pass in 10+2 or an equivalent exam from a recognised board, with English as one of your subjects. Any stream is accepted, so science, commerce and arts students all apply, and NCHMCT states there is no age bar. Admission is through the NCHM Joint Entrance Examination (NCHM JEE), which the National Testing Agency conducts as a computer-based test. Seats are then filled through centralised online counselling on a merit-cum-choice basis, using your All India Rank.

Private universities set their own rules, and some are stricter than the IHMs. For example, Lovely Professional University asks for 60% aggregate in 10+2 with Physics, Mathematics and English for its B.Sc Hotel and Hospitality Management, subject to its own test, JEE Main or CUET. Others set a 50% marks floor: Graphic Era Hill University asks for at least 50% in Class 12, from any stream, for its Bachelor of Hotel Management at Haldwani. Always read the eligibility line of each college before you apply, because a missing subject can rule you out even with good marks.

Duration and study mode

The B.Sc runs for three years, or six semesters. Under the UGC four-year undergraduate framework, a three-year degree needs 120 credits and a four-year honours degree needs 160 credits, and NCHMCT now lists an optional fourth year that leads to an honours degree. Industrial training in a working hotel is built into the course, so expect at least one long stretch of shift work before you graduate.

There is no online or distance version. The UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020 list Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Culinary Sciences as prohibited programmes for open and distance learning and online mode. If a website offers you an online hotel management degree, treat it as a red flag and ask which regulator approved it.

Hotel management course fees in 2026

NCHMCT fixes a common fee for the B.Sc HHA at its affiliated IHMs. IHMs in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad may charge up to 40% more on the tuition component, and private affiliated institutes may charge up to double the prescribed tuition. NCHMCT itself says tuition across its network can range from ₹3 lakh to ₹5 lakh for the full six semesters, depending on the institute. Hotel management course fees are revised each year, so confirm the current fee with the college before paying anything.

Subjects you will study

The first year builds your base in the four operating departments, along with food science, nutrition, hygiene and communication. The second year moves into management: food and beverage control, accommodation operations, hospitality accounting, hotel engineering and marketing. The final year adds human resources, financial management, tourism, event management, hospitality law, entrepreneurship and a research project. Practical hours in training kitchens, mock restaurants and model guest rooms run through every semester, and they carry real marks. Careers after the degree

Most graduates start as management trainees or operational staff in hotels, resorts and other hospitality brands, then move into supervisory roles in one department. Common first jobs include kitchen and food production roles, restaurant and bar service, front office and guest relations, and housekeeping. Outside hotels, the same skills transfer to airline catering and cabin services, cruise lines, hospital and institutional catering, event companies, quick-service restaurant chains and facility management firms. A good IHM graduate with a strong training record can also move on to an MBA in Hospitality Management after a few years of work.

Starting pay varies widely by employer, city and department, and no college can promise you a package, whatever its hotel management course fees. Ask each college for its latest placement report, and look at the median offer rather than the highest one.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

B.Sc Hotel Management suits you if you like working with people, can stay calm when a shift goes wrong, and are happy to stand for long hours in kitchens, lobbies and banquet halls. It also suits career switchers in their twenties who want a structured route into hotels, since the IHM route has no upper age limit.

Look elsewhere if you want a desk job from day one, cannot work weekends and festivals, or want to study while holding a full-time job. If you prefer the business side of hospitality without much kitchen work, a BBA in Hospitality Management may fit better. If you want a shorter, cheaper start, a diploma in hotel management gets you into a hotel faster, though a degree opens more doors later.

How to choose among hotel management colleges

Start with the affiliation. An IHM degree comes through NCHMCT and JNU, while a private university awards its own degree, and both are valid if the university is recognised by the UGC. Then compare the training set-up: how many practical hours you get, the size of the training kitchens, and which hotels take students for industrial training. Ask for the year-wise break-up of the hotel management course fees, including uniforms, knives, hostel and the training period, because these add up. Finally, ask what placement support the college gives, and compare hotel management colleges on their published placement data rather than brochures.
